The Handsome Night Rises

We know you all missed it. But it's been a less-than-handsome basketball season, thus our interest level waned. However, we're recharged and back for fun. We promise to make what might be the only episode of Season Eight of the Handsome Hour worth your while. Or at least we promise to make it pass an hour of your time. How's that for managing expectations?

Sure, it's been a lean sports year at Purdue -- but the basketball team has shown signs of life (plus even when our boys have a down year, it's not a down year), spring football is coming soon to a furnace near you, and let's be honest -- you miss us. We miss you, too. Let's not make a big deal out of it.

The Handsome Hour. Returning Wednesday night at 9 PM. Stream it live here or listen/download later.

  7. Realistically, the boys need at least 2 wins to squeak into the NIT (as a .500 team); 3 wins makes things a lot easier. While the NIT threw out the .500-or-better requirement years ago, they have yet to exercise that option with their selections-- methinks that will be reserved for basketball royalty-- a Duke, UNC, Big East team etc. in a down cycle. Add to that several upsets in the conference tourneys, bubble teams falling short, and all of a sudden the NIT is already starting to fill up. A CBI bid (buy-in, whatever) should be seriously considered-- whatever stigma attached to these pay-to-play minor tournaments is long gone, seeing as Pac 12, Mountain West and yes, even Big East teams have all participated over the last few years. Purdue is playing at a consistently high level, they are noticeably gelling as a team and can use the tournament experience and extra practice time, and there is money to be made if Mackey is at least half-full. Heck, Purdue football hemorrhages money with each minor bowl bid; at least the athletic department has a puncher's chance to be in the black this way. Of course, if the guys win the BTT outright, all of this is a moot point.

    Looking forward to the show!
