Wait, who are these guys? The Purdue Boilermakers were the lone Big Ten team to bring some pride in the annual ass-whipping that is known as the Big Ten/ACC Challenge last night, beating Virginia 61-59 on a last-second shot. You’ll have to excuse our confusion here at Boiled Sports since we’re not used to seeing Purdue teams win close games and have things break their way. Sure, it was at home, and that’s always nice, and Virginia is no powerhouse but they are #25 in the AP poll so they’re somebody.
In the game, Tarrance Crump hit a floated with under a second remaining to give the Boilers the two-point lead. The Mackey Arena crowd went nuts and Purdue moved to 5-1 on the year. Quietly, Matt Painter has put together a team that could very well be a competitive unit this year. None of us are ready to paint Purdue as a tourney sleeper or anything, but the 5-1 start against some reasonable competition is encouraging. It’s been a long time since there was anything to cheer about for Purdue hoops fans but the Gene Keady Era is officially over and you can see the Matt Painter Era taking shape.
As you can see from the photo, one of Purdue’s rarely-talked-about advantages is the fact that Carl Landry is several feet taller than most defenders.

You guys HAVE GOT to do a blog on Michael Irvin's comments about Tony Romo.
Irvin is such a fool, I wouldn't know where to begin. Plus, I feel like so many blogs are driving that story into the ground. Truth is, the bigger problem with the interview on Dan Patrick is that Irvin sounded sort of high or otherwise chemically altered. After he was caught (again) last year with a frickin' crack pipe in his car and didn't even miss a minute of airtime on Sunday Countdown, I knew he was untouchable. And you know what? He probably knows it too, despite how undeniably stupid he clearly is. I mean, dumb-as-a-doorknob STUPID.
Not only that, the game was on national television (cable) and I got to see most of it (west of the Mississippi) for a change. I was excited watching that game. I liked how Painter managed his players. But I liked how the players responded at the end. No panic, no rush, ran the play, made the shot. Clearly they still have some growing up to do. That foul at the end should have been on the floor because they had one to give. But I'll take whatever I can get. If nothing else, the game as a whole was encouraging.
I just can't help but wonder what would happen to any white broadcaster if he said something like, "Wow, Michael Vick is making good decisions out there today. I wonder if his grandma slept with some white man a few generations back, because there is no way a black quarterback can be that smart without some white blood in him."
