The Infallablility of Jeter

In the interest of honesty, I should point out that I do like Derek Jeter as a player and I also like ARod as a player, though I'm not some huge ARod defender. That said, I wanted to point out a play in tonight's (ongoing) Yankees-Mets game on ESPN. I'm kind of curious if anything gets made of a bad baserunning decision by teflon Derek.

In the top of the third, Jeter doubles and is on second base with one out. Matsui gets up and doubles to center, but it's off the glove of Carlos Beltran, who dove to try to make the catch. Jeter, somehow, only makes it to third base. Somehow, Jon Miller and the perpetually retarded Joe Morgan don't really make anything out of it.

So wait a minute... Jeter, who is supposedly always in the game and thinking ahead of everyone else, can't score from second on a double? Is there any way to interpret this other than a miscue, and a significant one given how hard a time the Yankees are having lately scoring runs?

I mean, Hideki Matsui -- Godzilla, for crying out loud -- managed to get to second on a hit to center field, and Jeter can't get home from second on the same hit?? Just seems kind of.... ridiculous.

If ARod makes this blunder, it's all over the place. But since it was Jeter -- and since the Yanks are now blowing out the Mets as I write this -- not a peep will be heard. Not sure that's right.

Really... base running is your major concern right now??? How about being 21st in Fielding and #25 in ERA? OR your pitching hopes rest on a 44 year old Texan who weighs 318 pounds? Or your DH who admitted to using Steriods and you over paid him? Or that you are 10.5 games behind the Red Sox? Base running, Really?

Miller actually made a big deal out of the fact that the Yankees had hit back-to-back doubles and not scored a run.

Jeter didn't score because he had to hold up at second to see if the ball would be caught. Because the right fielder was backing up the play and got the ball in quickly, he wasn't able to score.

Matsui got a double out of it because he didn't have to wait around at home to see if the ball would be caught. That's why he only got to second.

If you think it was a bad play on Jeter's part, consider this: what if he had taken off for third, only to have Beltran make the play and double him off the bag? He absolutely made the right decision.

To both of you -- I was just making an observation. And I stand by the fact that if ARod had done the same thing, more would have been made of it, especially if they had lost.

OMDQ -- I know what happened on the play; I was watching, too. And yes, Jeter could have and should have scored on the play. Beltran is lying on his stomach in center field and the ball has bounced away. I realize he had to hold up, but home plate is much further away than second base and yet Matsui made it to second with no problem (slower runner, advancing two bases) while Jeter only made it to third. And also, Jeter was more than halfway when the ball popped loose, so I still don't see any reason not to send him. not when they are trailing 1-0 and struggling to score.

However you want to defend it, they had back to back doubles and the inning ended with them getting no runs. Not good.

But again, it was just an observation.

So here are some stupid questions: Who coaches 3rd for the Yankees? Did this person tell Jeter to hold up or was he telling him to go home? Does Jeter even pay attention to the base coaches? Why hasn't said coach been fired yet?

Larry Bowa coaches third for the Yankees.
