Exposed
Sadly, I was wrong...way off, in fact. I thought not only that Purdue would play competitively versus Ohio State, but that my Boilers would win. From the get-go, the Bucks were the better team. Painter did not recover from a poor showing versus UND, in fact he played pretty darned poorly. I counted AT LEAST 6 interceptions that hit Buckeye defenders in the numbers that were dropped. But, the offensive play-calling and preparation was laughable. The new wrinkles that I thought we would see were non-existent...In fact, it looked like Purdue had no clue what to do on the offensive side of the ball. The only bright spot, to me was Dustin Keller's play. He looked like the weapon that Purdue fans all know he is. Conversely, Purdue's big receivers didn't seem to break loose from OSU's DB's and Bryant dropped more than one ball that he should have caught.
To me, and granted, I have not watched tape, the defense was not the problem...when the crowd urged them to make a big, tough play, they seemed to do so...especially in the second and third quarters.
My biggest disappointment of the night, even bigger than that in the coaching staff was the fans. I really don't like OSU and its fans...but there were a lot of them in Ross Ade- too many. The John Purdue Section beneath the press box was littered with red shirts, both end zones were filled with Buck fans and there were pockets throughout. All of the negativity toward the Purdue fanbase seems to be warranted. We are soft. So soft, we sell 1/3 of our tickets to the visiting Buck fans...in a game in which we came in 5-0 and ranked in the top-25. Sad.
So the question is- Has the apathy of the fanbase softened Joe Tiller OR has Joe Tiller's even-keel "everything's fine" philosophy poisoned Purdue's faithful? Regardless, the Tiller teams that used to fight until the end and never stop playing until 0:00 seem to be nothing but a distant memory. This game was over in the second quarter.
This will go on the shelf with

Purdue v. tOSU postgame

Just think, if early in the game Purdue rushed more than 3 on some key 3rd downs (which they did only after the Buckeyes scored their touchdowns) how much closer this game would have been. Why do we keep doing this? We keep developing NFL caliber linemen, but the last cornerback we've produced was... Rod Woodson?
What's worse than those JPC members giving up tickets is the fact they most likely did it because the game was so late. 15,000 OSU fans in Ross-Ade was embarassing.
So, I'm thinking that I'm starting the Joe Tiller Retirement Party. It will be great - we'll have a great dinner, get as many former players as possible. Maybe we'll do it like a Roast. We'll give him a gold watch as a going away present and everything!
Okay, I didn't think we would win, but that was HORRIBLE. Was it just me or did everytime they showed Tiller on the scoreboard he looked like a deer in the headlights? What, was he thinking about making it home in time to see Matlock? I'm so glad we're going on vacation and going to miss the next two games.
And sorry for the late response Boilerdowd, but we're in section 128, row 32. Way to close to the visiting section. Most of the time I think we're at a road game.
Ryan, Ross, Paul & 96...I think we're all in accord. I've said this before, I really like Joe Tiller. I have heard his perspective on the world and agree with it. That said, because of his perspective on the program, we seem to be stuck.
Purdue has no right to fire him, especially since the players do not seem to be living the "Thug Life" any longer. But, when he decides to retire, I will be excited for the next chapter.
The big-money JPCers need their beauty rest...get off their back!!!
It's one thing to have 15,000 OSU fans back in 1996 when the program was a punchline, but it should not happen in '07.
Hi I am Sylvester Yon-Rambo of the Men of Scarlet and Gray blog.
I just wanted to thank you for posting a note on our blog and also wanted to say that I correctly picked the number of yards my Buckeyes would allow your Boilermakers to gain.......272 yards was my guess.
Not for Not but I have been to a few Buckeye games in W. Lafayette......It is truly sad how many tickets my fellow Buckeye fans can get to each of your games.
I also want to wish you guys the best of luck in the rest of your season. Hopefully you can win out and finish in 2nd place to My Beloved Buckeyes.
On a side note we got 2 First place votes in the coaches poll this week.....think Joe Tiller was one of those?
Jeremiah, I'm pretty sure tOSU got Tiller's #1 vote. I'm also sure, after listening to his postgame comments that he was sure Purdue's offense would be man-handled by the Buckeye defense. As a result, he thought not game-planning would be the best way to handle such a challenge.
Good guess on the yardage. Much of Purdue's offense was unimportant garbage yardage too. I think midway through the third quarter, Purdue had not been in the red zone. That's deplorable.
Tiller's even keel approach translates to don't try too hard. Don't have emotions. Don't acknowledge expectations. Be a loser!
As a casual observer of the game on Saturday night at a bar with about 12 Newcastles, I must say the Purdue fans looked amazing and excited. They looked like an SEC Football Crowd. Tiller and his squad on the other hand showed no emotion at all. I dont think Purdue could have beat Michigan, Penn State Wisconsin or Illinios let alone Ohio State on Saturday night.
Wow- the long-lost prom king stopped by.
We will find out if your assessment's correct as Purdue plays UM next week and Penn State in a few...both on the road. Not so good.
Were you drinking Newcastle Ultra? You should probably watch your carbs if you're going to drink a dozen.
