It's Over: Sampson Out at IU

In a move that simply has to be made by IU's AD, Kelvin Sanctions will not be coaching IU for the rest of the season.

Good luck to those who still believe there's a chance he's going to be around next season.

Also, it should be interesting to see what happens with IU's prized recruit Ebanks & the others in the incoming class.

This is a perfect storm for fans on this side of the rivalry: UNCERTAINTY.

The mere fact that this will drag on until the summer is a great thing! If they were able to fire him immediately and then get a new coach right after the season, then they could hope to salvage the recruits. However, with everything pending his firing AND NCAA penalties on top of that, recruiting is going to be at a standstill for IU.

I love it. Here's hope for a Big Ten championship, tournament championship, and a deep run in the NCAA's. Go get em Painter!

meh. frankly i wasn't too concerned with IU in the next couple of seasons anyway as they were sure to drop off once gordon and white left. i'm mainly concerned right now with them THIS season, since we're tied with them in the loss column in the race to win our first conference title since i began paying attention to purdue basketball (1999-2000, my freshman year). and with that in mind, the timing and result of the sampson fiasco was unfortunate since it coincided with two HUGE home games for the hoosiers - both of which the players played extra hard for their coach, and both of which resulted in IU victories. and i'm worried they will ride that wave to a conference championship while purdue will fall just short.

if we get at least a share of the conference title this year, or win the big ten in '09 or '10 (which is quite possible), i might take all that back. but for now i'm worried. and thus my indifference to sampson's suspension/firing/whatever.

Mo, perspective like that is why you're famous.

bp, I like your confidence...I think their recruiting class for next season will be shot unless they are able to legally hire the right coach.

I hear Wittman, Skiles and Dakich...I'm sure John over at the Hoosier report knows more names, but without another cheater, the 5-star type player, yearly will not be IU's trademark...They'll get back to winning as a team and with Skiles, I could truly despise them. I like that.

I am just not a fan of the fact they were able to keep him for their three most important games of the year, but then get rid of him before playing Northwestern

Go Wildcats!

The way I see it, the class of 2009 (current HS Juniors) is the most important upcoming class for Matt Painter. You see, this years seniors could not see this success coming from a mile away. However, the juniors still have time to decide and if they want to play for 4 years in the Midwest, Purdue is the place to be (not IU!).

Plus these players will be incoming freshman when Kramer and Grant are seniors while Hummel, Moore, Martin, and Johnson are juniors. What a great team to be a part of!

Who in the big ten could match that future success? Hopefully Purdue can land a big man banger from that class. I think that could solidify Purdue in the landscape for another 3-4 years after that...

i dont share your love for hosier bashing, but i think the ncaa should actually do something about this.

you hire a shady guy, he gets busted 2 times, yet you refuse to put any type of controls around his activity.

it's one thing when a coach acts on his own and hides it from the school, but this is a bit foolish, you hire a crook you are a crook.

here's another thing that paterno lives' comment made me realize - IU probably doesn't care if they get a postseason ban for a year or two if it starts next year. as i mentioned, they will likely struggle without gordon and white, so what difference does it make to them if they are banned from postseason play, or lose a scholarship or two for a couple years? this year is what matters to them. IU dodges a huge bullet as long as they get to play in the NCAA tournament this year.

and actually, i don't share the love for hoosier-bashing either, normally. i grew up a huge mizzou fan (both my parents went there) so for me, beating illinois (and currently seeing them in 10th place in the standings) is far more satisfying than beating indiana.

I agree that IU wants to protect this year as much as possible. However, in the landscape of college basketball, I think all programs wish continued success.

Under that heading, I think losing out on a couple of recruiting years could set back a program further than the 2 years it was already going to be "down."

It goes back to Purdue being good 2-3 years from now (already expected) and even beyond because of what they do this year (hopefully).

bp, I never thought I'd read the words "big man banger" together except in the cable channels that are in the 900s. So, kudos for inventing a creative way to use those words :)

Agree with everything you said.

That reminds me of a Bob & Tom skit:

"So you took your secretary to Maine, Senator Kennedy? Bangor?"

"Of course I did! I'm a Kennedy!"

ba dum dum crash!
