Big Hire, Bigger Forehead
Kudos to Greenspan and the IU athletic department. It seems they have hired a very good coach who can recruit, is a good Xs & Os guy, is super-high energy, and is young (42).
All that said, his forehead, histrionics and the simple fact he's in Bloomington should give us plenty to make fun of/dislike as the coming seasons pass.
To tell you the truth, I don't know a ton about the guy's ethics, personality or anything else...it just seems like he's a pretty solid coach. But, like I said when Willingham made his deal with the devil a few years ago, likable or not, Crean has decided to lie with fleas...You know the rest.
This will go on the shelf with
Tom Crean to IU

I was wondering when you guys would post something about Crean. I think he'll do well there, in a few years. The mess that he is walking into can't be fixed in one or two seasons. It will be interesting to see if he gets run out of town before he can have success.
Don't you lie with dogs then get the fleas?
That's not a forehead, it's a 5-head. Hello, grade school!
I think we didn't post sooner because this is an intensely normaly and sane hire by IU. He's developed Marquette into a solid program again (thanks, Dwayne Wade!) and done so in an apparently clean way. As boilerdowd intimates, he's not innately easy to make fun of... but we'll find a way to mock him.
Still, not sure what the allure was here, unless it was just cash. The guy was doing well at a school that recently leaped to the so-called best confernece, the Big East.
If it IS a cash grab, have fun Tom. You're not "Bobby," so you'll always have some proving to do until you win your fourth title. Have fun with that.
He'll get more of a shot than Mike Davis did...
Boilerdowd knows what I'm throwing down.
bp- his teams weren't "scrappy" enough.
Are we sure he's pureblood white?? He looks little too tan to me. Might not be pale enough for bloomington.......
Fair concern, Easy...he does seem to have quite a bit melanin.
Time will tell if his teams are too "athletic" play to "fast paced".
His recruiting leaves something to be desired. If you look at MU's committment list over the last 6 years, he wasn't able to lure many 4 star guys to Milwaukee.
Posters on GBI familar with the MU program say that he isn't the best in game coach, but we will see.
I think Dwane Wade was his Drew Brees, if you catch my drift.
BUT, he's from a family of coaches and I hear he recruits from Chicago quite well. Which, to paraphrase one article I read, just made Bruce Weber's job a lot tougher - just what he needed.
With the resources he'll have at IU, he could be dangerous... ya know, if the fans haven't run him off during the whole painful rebuilding thing.
He recruited well-enough to remind me every time I watched Marquette that it'd be great to have Dominique James in the gold and black...I don't know if recruiting is his problem- they seemed pretty talented.
I like the Brees comparison...hopefully it's correct and he doesn't get another "Drew" anytime soon. There's no doubt Wade was a special player.
Other possible headlines for this post included:
"IU Creans Its Pants"
"Creeeeean... Get on Top"
And, of course, when Purdue stomps them, "Whipped Crean"
Thank you, thank you... be sure to tip your waitress.
Another take:
One thing that stood out to me when I watched MU play UK in the first round was the speed of their guards. I don't know if it will be that way at IU, but he definitely had a whole lot of quickness on the floor. They could all put the ball on the floor and drive the lane.
It could definitely cause problems for more physical defenses (read: Purdue) who tend to foul once they're beat off the dribble and don't get help defense. Of course, a team full of small quick guys can also struggle shooting against taller guards, so...
Well, I'm off to Crean in my patio table...
I'm refraining from comment for around 2 years because God Himself couldn't coach our team to the NCAA tourney the next 2 (and possibly 3) years.
That said, I did "crean" my pants when Greenspan finally did something right with the basketball program. I think that sums up my feelings nicely.
(Get it, "crean" my pants? It's something that happens when you reach puberty. That makes it funny. I'm sure PU people are the only ones having thought those jokes up...)
Hey MJS, two places to avoid if you are as offended as you're acting regarding juvenile humor:
1) this site
2) the rest of the Internet
