Not such an easy transition?

We've heard Morgan Burke, Joe Tiller and the media all tell us that the Tiller-Hope transition is a model of how a coach should go out and other should come in. But, recruits might not agree with that assessment.

As of today, here's how the Big Ten football verbal commitments look:
Illinois
2 verbals (2x****)

Indiana
0 verbals

Iowa

2 verbals (***, ****)

UM

9 verbals (*****, 5 x ****, 2 x ***)

MSU
7 verbals (6 x ****, ***)

Minnesota
5 verbals (****, 4 x ***)

Northwestern
2 verbals (2 x ***)

aOSU

17 verbals (*****, 12 x ****, 4 x ***)

PSU

12 verbals (3 x ****, 7 x ***)

Purdue
0 verbals

Wisconsin
5 verbals (2 x ****, 3 x ***)

So, Purdue is on the same footing as IU (whoopty-doo)...everybody else in the league, from Northwestern to aOSU (of course) have all convinced at least a couple kids from the class of '09 to lean their way. Granted, we're eight months from signing day...a lot can happen and 18 year olds are a fickle bunch. But, this isn't the best possible start to the Hope era...This surely isn't a running start for Hope and Co, it might not even be a walking start.

I'm not taking anything away from Hope- he's targeting quite a few high-level recruits, but we're not really leading in any of these kids minds.

Unless the upcoming season is a rousing success, Hope's first recruiting class might be less-than-stellar. Furthermore, with the loss of a four-year starter at QB, a three-year starting WR, two very experienced RBs, both three year starter defensive linemen and an established MLB, Hope's odds of initial success look long. And, this coaching transition might be much bumpier than some have told us it will be.

Indiana does in fact of a verbal commitment from Josh Keyt a single star prospect at TE for the class of 2009. Did you even bother to check? Or was this written a while ago and posted today?

This does have me a little concerned. I ahve seen GBI post tons of "Intersted" profiles, but no one has said "yes"

At least Elliott or SAiller will have 2+ years int he program.

Nothing like a slow news day to start the gloom and doom speculation, eh bozos?

In case you were unaware, Varsity Blue has Big Ten recruiting rankings. Needless to say, Purdue is in last place.

khr- according to rivals.com as of 4:00pm on 6/14, zero verbals had committed to Bloomington. Maybe it's because, according to a couple of sources, he won't even be a schollie athlete, but will either be a grayshirt or preferred walk-on. Any other walk-ons you want to count?

Hey brave anonymy- I don't think the sky is falling...but it sure isn't blue, clear and breezy.

Tiller waited a season or two too long to hang it up. The situation Purdue is in is less-than ideal because of his decision to chase Jack with half of his arse.

Well then, mr. dowd, let the panic continue...

It's EARLY.

Eff off Anonymous. Bitches like yourself come down on us for being biased so we write about how our coach is off to a slow start in the recruiting world -- full disclosure, admitting our school's weaknesses... and you rip on us for that.

Piss off, loser. Go read some Terry Hutchens.

Well j-money, if that's even your real name, it's "Bitches" like you that piss me off. You douche bags are aving the white flag when it's EIGHT F-ING MONTHS from signing day.

Walk on, non walk on, does it matter? Its still a verbal commit from a player, a player who will probably never see the field, but a player

Purdue Matt said...

khr,

Yes it does matter.

Friends-
When did I not say it was early? It is...but our favorite team is playing from behind. I'm not panicking because we don't have a ton to lose at this point. My panic, or worry happened about three years ago as I realized things had changed. I want Purdue to succeed very much...but as factors mount, it gets more difficult. The old adage that great athletes make plays is still true...killers are bigger in the clutch. Honestly, who was the last ice-cold competitor to step up in this program?

I'm hopefull for Siller, but his Spring wasn't too great...granted, the system may change a bit next year, but he might be that guy; let's hope so.

I'm glad I'm being called a douchebag by such a respectable person as un-named internet hero...How could I not call that noteworthy. Such comments make me lose sleep and think long and hard about my worth as a man and it makes me wonder if my nearly 30 years of cheering for Purdue, my diploma from the same institution, my hundreds of contests I've attended for the Boilers seem shallow. Thanks for stopping by, champ. Also, I'm not aving the white flag- I'd have to know what that means before I did so.

So he doesnt count then?

boilerdowd said...

Since he doesn't register on most recruiting sites and IU won't be using a scholarship on him, he doesn't count. Every year, Big Ten programs have guys who just want to give it a try and attempt to walk on after their high school careers. At this point, Keyt isn't any different.

I can't find a site that will give me a list of walk-ons and non-schollie players in the Big Ten...If I could, I'd list them and IU would get credit for his verbal.
