Chris Summers, Brandon Whittington, Curtis Painter, Dorien Bryant, Kyle Orton, Ben Jones, Berin Lacevic, Montrell Lowe, Kyle Smith, Brandon Kirsch, Brandon Hance, Kelly Butler, Travis Dorsch, Antwaun Rogers and even Drew Brees.

What do all of these players have in common?

First, they're all Purdue football players who were pretty solid, at least in most cases, during their careers. Furthermore, about half of them were stars in the black and gold. Another, more painful commonality is they all made costly mistakes late in a close game, during the Tiller era, that could have cemented a victory...and our Boilers lost a heartbreaker shortly after. I think it's important for individuals to take responsibility for their actions...in life as well as in sport. But, it's hard to lay blame when the same things happen repetitively with a wide array of players on all sides of the ball in a number of painful, sour-tasting, putrid-smelling ways.

I used to think it was Jim Chaney's fault when Purdue got conservative on offense when our Boilers were in the lead...Then, Coach Legg showed some really predicable tendencies...yesterday, we saw Coach Z painting a very familiar offensive picture during the second and third quarters- Three and out; draw left, option right, dropped pass. As the coaching gets tighter, the players get tighter, the fans get tighter, the energy in the stadium drastically changes...and before you know it, a lead has shrunk, then disappeared and finally has been replaced with a narrow margin that ends in defeat of my alma mater's football team.
I compared yesterday's game v. Oregon to a job interview in which you really aren't qualified...Like Purdue yesterday, there's nothing to lose...much to gain. And our Boilers played just that way...for about 18 minutes...then things changed. According to a radio program I was listening to while driving south on 65, the Purdue offense had 9 offensive possessions in a row in which they moved the ball 30-or-less yards...I would estimate many of those drives were 15 yards or-less and at least four of them were 3-and-outs.
I honestly don't give a damn who tells me different...This is a systematic, philisophical, and even psychological problem that will be cured, one way or another at the end of this season. And while I didn't want it to end this way, an old wound was torn open yesterday and a salenic-lemon tonic was shot into the contusion that reminded me of way too many games I've watched during the last 11 years.

Well said. We're going to get one this year we shouldn't, but I fear a game like next week where we lose one we shouldn't.
There is no margin for error this year to do so.
I agree about stealing one from a team that doesn't expect it...CMU could be a classic trap/let-down game.
Danger!
Wow. Oregon showed up with their D game and did all they could to lose. Second worse game they've played in the 40 years I've been a fan. Purdue should have capitolized. Oh well- a win is a win and I'll take it.
That statium Purdue has looks very fan friendly.
My wife learned what it was like to be a Purdue fan over the weekend. My throat is soar from yelling, and I think she learned a few new words. She also had a lot of questions about the "Shout" thing going on between the third and fourth quarter.
Blazer, either your memory is failing you or you don't watch that many games. Oregon was simply a bad team in '04 as they missed a bowl and got beaten, by an awful IU team at home very early in the season.
I'd agree if you said Oregon played sloppy, but I don't agree with your assessment.
Paul, I am never in my seat during Shout as I always have to use the restroom at that time. Weird.
This game would have been alot harder to deal with had I not seen the OSU game from '04. Or the Wisconsin game from '04. Or the OSU game from '01. Or the IU game from '01. Well you get my point. I've been a Tiller backer ever since he beat Notre Dame in '97, but even I realize that its time for Joe to go fly fishing.
Also, "Shout" needs to go. How bad is it when you steal the idea of the 5th quarter from Wisconsin and can't even pick better music. Why not just use Jump Around? We stole the idea anyway, why not steal the song too?
Good post and well said. I don't blame Chris Summers, it was a tough kick into the wind and he hit 4 others that day. I don't blame Curtis Painter as he was victimized by some key drops (that one to Whittington was a perfect throw) and his receivers not getting off the line for quick outs.
Like you, I blame the conservative playcalling with a 20-3 lead. It was so fucking predictable. We need to go for the kill, we had all the momentum in the world. You don't sit on a 17 point lead against an offense like Oregon with 2 fucking quarters left. Maddening.
I don't blame the kids, they played their hearts out. I blame the coaches.
@kender,
Purdue beat OSU in 2004. I think you mean 2003 when we lost in overtime in the 'Shoe.
kender, don't know if you read this...we're on the same page:

Matt - You're right, it was 2003. All I remember is Ben Jones missing that FG and then getting blindingly drunk
Boilerdowd - No, I hadn't seen that. Great minds think alike it seems
Good post. My only regret from Saturday is that I allowed the Boilers to get me excited about the football team again for a few hours. I should've known better than that. I'm thankful for all that Tiller has done for Purdue football, but I'm not letting them fool me again this season.
For the first time since 2004, we have a real football team. Think about that for a second.
I'm not sure what your definition of real is, but I've been, um, 'enjoying' these crushing losses for the last 5-6 years. What exactly is different this season?
Purdue still sucks
I'm glad I'm not the only one that thinks the Shout thing is L-A-M-E. It's obviously inspiring to our football team. Not.
This loss was a little easier to swallow because my heart is still on the floor from losing to Wisconsin about four years ago. I no longer have any security in a Purdue lead when we stop trying to win and start trying not to lose.
