Go ahead, you short-sighted, easily-pleased, easily-satisfied jacks. I dare you. Justify that performance and tell us again that we are out of line in questioning the preparation and coaching of this team. Do you think our talent is that bad? And even if it was... whose fault is bad talent? Perhaps those who recruit them? Nahhhhh, can't be Joe's fault! He's a good guy!
Whose fault is it when the team gets steamrolled, yet again, only this time by a team with not nearly the talent of a PSU or an OSU? We were told to lighten up. We were asked things like, "Did you really expect them to beat OSU/PSU?"
While that pussy mentality many Purdue "supporters" exhibit is inexcusable in itself (yes, I do think we should be beating those teams... sometimes), let's for sake of argument accept it. It's ludicrous, but okay.... poor old Joe. He just wants to retire and go fishing. We can't expect him to compete against the class of the conference! Not even at home! So okay, then, what's the excuse this week? Come on, I want to hear it. What's the reason that we shouldn't be coming down on the program -- and specifically, the coaches -- this week?
Do you find this acceptable? Or do you think Joe has "earned" this? I've heard that phrase a lot. He's "earned" the right to go out how he wants. Folks, he already went out. He's gone. Today's game was just one more indication of that.
And nobody earns the right to torpedo a program, no matter what he's done for it. Sorry, I don't agree. I'm f-cking furious and you should be, too. This is embarrassing. No, not that we lost to Northwestern on the road... but once again, it's HOW this team loses. Giving up 48 points?? To that team? All due respect to the Purple Warriors, but they still haven't played much of anybody and the one team they did play (and who beat them -- MSU) is getting dump-trucked by OSU as I write this. So why do the Boilers put up another listless performance?
Because the team has given up. I don't want to hear specific guys pointed out that you think were playing hard.... it doesn't matter. Overall, the team is seeing the record and the effort being put in from the top down -- and hearing the comments about the limitations of how good they can be -- and they're checking out.
As Tim says below, look at the way Matt Painter runs things and contrast that fire to the lazy-ass, disinterested, unemotional way Tiller is running things. And then he has the audacity to say those who would dare to question him are "low IQ." You want to talk about a lack of class, there it is.
Once again, I do appreciate what Joe did to put Purdue football on the map and to turn around a dormant and long-dismal program.
HOWEVER... This is unacceptable. I am pissed and disgusted. And you Tiller apologists should be, too. This is nothing to be proud of.

Thank you.
When does basketball season start?
Tiller's fire went out 3 years ago. It's just becoming much more evident this season. Look at his interviews before big games. He wanted to borrow 4 Oregon players and start the game early to try to keep up with the Ducks. He hailed Terrelle Pryor as the greatest thing since sliced bread and seemed quite comfortable accepting inevitable defeat.
Tiller just wants to enjoy his farewell tour. Thank God for Matt Painter.
great post, J.
Matt?
Don't worry, come Monday, Joe will have a funny quip and get back to getting progress updates on his Wyoming ranch.
Once we hit our second Sun Bowl, I finally realized that Joe's success is partly due to 1)hitting the lottery with Drew and 2) the explosion in bowl games.
I might use the Old Oaken Bucket to vomit in if they make a big deal about Joe in November.
I was planning to come to the IU game but have decided the cost of flights, etc., aren't worth seeing Joe's final game and, you know, our shot at a fourth win.
Also -- they have trains in Indiana?
I think my monitor just caught fire with your level of pissedifity.
LOVE IT!!!
I've been writing letters to the editor of the Exponent for three years as a student (2002-04) calling for Joe's dismissal. I didn't use the typical "Our team sucks" approach. I used facts. Wins and losses...against Big 10 teams. I will be at Breakfast Club on 11/22...then I will go to the game...wearing my homemade "Fire Tiller" shirt one last time.
Also, I encourage everyone to go to www.purdueexponent.com and look at Hope's contract. Under "meets expectations" - 6 wins/season. Really? Six wins? Really?
Rousing applause from me and my buddies.
Oh, and J-money... yeah there are lots of trains in Indiana. Theyre just nessled in the two region counties. On top of eachother. God I hate dirty NWI.
And lets not mention the trains in the fraternity houses...
I f'd up my dates...it was 06-08. I was understandably a little drunk when I wrote that comment.
Is www.curtispainter12.com still up? Who put that page up?
Is it his fault? Is it the fault of the senior Quarterback #12 that Purdue cannot put 6 on the board consistently and score points? Is the senior quarterback a leader, leading his team on and off the field, firing up team to play with emotion? I like to blame a lot there, but we have to show some blame to the offensive play-calling, too it is only fair. Share thew blame throughout. Pretty lethargic offense.
Spack Nasty Defense played a good start to the game, a good 1st quarter.....maybe bend but don't break...gives up yards in between the 20s but no scores, but then the break happened. Purdue cuts it to 17-12 and it looks like that was going to be the score going into halftime on the Korey Sheets toss right, but then the Wildkittens struck fast on the Spack Nasty Defense. Bad 2nd half at Notre Dame, solid games vs ranked Penn State, and ranked Ohio State, not great games, but pretty solid, then N'western getting 48.
Coach Hope has his work cut out for him. Any good coaches out there for offensive coordinators who can work with Hope for 2009? Tommy Bowden is out of a head coaching job at Clemson. Would he be willing to coach the offense somewhere?
Nitro Matt
Wow. Classy post.
i agree it was a classy post.
given the circumstances, it could've easily been stated in a much nastier & tasteless manner.
i sat behind the purdue bench yesterday i have never in my life seen such a listless, lifeless bunch. i can understand that in the 4th when you are down 3 scores but this went on the entire game even after good plays by the team nobody seemed excited.(ryan baker did bark at the defense once after they held NU to a field goal after a turn over but that was it) i totally agree Tiller has given up and it is a shame because there are seniors on that team who desrve better.
You see that Drew Brees spot on the NFL on FOX this morning? WOW.. What a stud!!! Gave me goosebumps!!!! I hope Drew Brees gets 5,000 yards and passes Dan Marino and gets to the Superbowl and loses to Big Ben and the Steelers.
you're a smart guy, Matt...you didn't try to defend him.
First off, great post. Well written.
Unfortunately this season is just the worst incarnation of Tiller's infutility over the last couple of years. We have all seen flashes of briliance against teams we don't have a shot at beating (OSU, PSU, etc. - and occassionally pulling one out K-state) but then get walloped by teams we SHOULD beat every time (going back to Toledo Tiller's first season amongst others). For whatever reason he can't put together an entire season (see: 5-0 season and fumble against Wisconsin a few years back) or in a lot of cases an entire game (ND this year).
I didn't even watch the game this weekend and don't imagine Ill go out of my way to watch the rest. If the players/coaches don't care, why should I?
seeing boiler fans itching for basketball season to start is ironic
Ironic? You must be young, Anonymous... Purdue's always been a basketball school.
Did anyone catch Zach Langdon's article in the EXPONENT?
Kory Sheets (postgame):
"In my eyes I'm looking at it as I need some help. I don't know, but I can't do it all by myself. Everybody's coming to me saying Sheets get the offense going, get the offense going. I do something good and something bad happens. I need some help."
Langdon on Sheets:
"Sheets appeared to be growing impatient with the Boilers passing attack, mainly senior quarterback Curtis Painter. When asked if he believed Painter could lead the Boilers to victory, he only offered a 'No comment.'"
Langdon on Sheets:
"Sheets spoke of disappointment in the Boilers' five turnovers, including three Painter interceptions. But it wasn't just the passes Painter is throwing to the other team that irked Sheets; it was also the mere four receptions for 31 yards that left the back unsatisfied with his stats on Saturday. He recalled one play in particular where he was wide open in the flats in the red zone but quarterback Curtis Painter didn't see him. That's not the first time that's happened this season, and Sheets said he doesn't expect it to be the last."
Sheets on the offense:
"I'm kind of starting to get used to it. I'm starting to just run out there and just stand there. It seems like the defense is not even covering me because they don't think I'm going to get the ball anyway.
"So I guess I'll just go back and practice like that next week and the week after and get used to it."
Great article, Zach.
Crappy team, Joe.
Keep running, Kory. This is your NFL job interview.
Hey Boilerdowd,
You win. I have always grit my teeth and said that without Joe, Purdue Football would not even be a discussion.
I have tried to blame players, schedules, whatever to give Joe some slack.
Then I happened to watch Illinois dismantle IU. What I noticed immediately was the astounding difference between the Illini offense and our own.
They seem to line up close to the same way every time, and yet there are at least five different plays that could happen at the snap of the ball.
Conversely, Purdue has at least five different formations from which one play will be run at the snap of the ball.
It reminded me of what creative play calling, and motivated players can achieve.
You were right. While #12 is awful, Joe Tiller is at this point even worse.
I just Hope (no pun) that Coach Hope is as intense as I have heard he is (Drew Brees liked him). I hope he can clean house, and install his own staff, and give this team some attitude.

Whoops,
Sorry for the double post.
I got a little worked up - at least someone is.
