Upon Further Review...

In case you haven't watched game film from Saturday, here's a chance to witness some details, at least on the offensive side of the ball. I didn't make this video, but I'm glad this guy did. The music isn't so great, but the video is just as effective with the sound down.

A few thoughts on what I see:
-Ken Plue was impressive in person and was as well on this video
-Dennis Kelly (Freshman lineman, #68) who just burned his redshirt last week was impressive, especially as plays broke down
-Siller made a wide array of throws...seems to have more touch than Painter, but his balls are a little more wobbly than Curt's (he should see a doctor about that...). In all seriousness, he made some very good decisions too and didn't force or panic, as 12 seems to have done much of this season.
-I knew Greg Orton played well...he played really well; and he knew it too. He was in the face of the hapless UM DBs on a lot of occasions late in the game. He was probably sick of them holding him...didn't matter though, even while cheating, they couldn't guard him.
-There's no way Painter should play next week.
-Michigan is awful, so that needs to be taken into account, but they blitzed and Siller handled the blitzes and different looks very well.

Addendum:
Justin Siller was just named Big Ten Co-Offensive Player of the Week. His reward will be Painter starting next week?

Siller should start the rest of the season and it shouldn't even be a debate. Tiller's quote about Painter possibly starting if he's 100% healthy infuriates me. The only thing I hope is that Tiller doesn't truly feel this way and is only trying to make it harder for MSU to prepare.

I'll bet you an ice cold glass of tap water that Painter has at least one more start before seasons end.

A house on campus, shortly after the Michigan game:

Curtis walks through the front door and tosses his keys onto the side table. The keys ricochet off of the wall above the table, landing on the floor.

"Siller was good," mumbles Curtis under his breath. "A little too good - but no matter."

A self-confident smile curls the corners of Curtis' lips as he descends the basement stairs.

"Who's there?" a woman's voice calls weakly. "Can you help me?"

Curtis kneels at the edge of the 12-foot pit. "Just three more weeks, Mrs Tiller, then you are free to leave."

Before returning upstairs, Curtis removes a carefully wrapped sandwich from the refrigerator beside the pit.

Cocking his arm, he tosses the sandwich toward the pit before turning toward the stairs.

On the far side of the basement, far from the pit, the sandwich lands amid a pile of 5 weeks worth of moldy, unopened sandwiches.

Back upstairs, Curtis carefully dials a number on the prepaid cell phone.

"Coach, it's me. You do know who's starting in Lansing, DON'T YOU?"

- I wish the Tillers nothing but the best, but this is the only explanation I can come up with for Tiller's bizarre fixation with #12.

38, no bet...the stakes are just too high!

Matt, give your Dad, Joe, a call...he'll listen to you! (you know I kid because I care)

Dozer, I don't think it's an accurate story...I think Curt's got pictures of Coach Tiller dressed like Little Bo Peep.

Is that music from a mix tape someone made for their girlfriend?

it sure seems like it...didn't I actually put that on the tape I gave you last month?

Nevermind.

Some favorites:

at the 48 second mark, he makes a UM defender -- who knew Siller had the ball -- look absolutely silly.

In many spots, I also like that even when he's scrambling (and some of those are happy feet that he'll get better about) he's scanning the field for receivers. Haven't seen a Purdue QB do that in a long time.

Good use of the pump fake. Another thing we haven't seen much of.

The pass to Orton at 3:32... again, he uses the pump fake and then sends it in there with confidence. The three-quarters throwing motion reminds me a little of Vince Young... not textbook, but who cares if it works?

At 3:52, he again make Michigan look silly. That kind of ability in the pocket just makes me love the kid.

Watch at 4:07, a UM defender has an unblocked path to Siller and tries to close in but Siller just goes around him. Do the coaches see this? That's impressive, and I don't care how bad Michigan is -- that's still a D1 defense.

A second love song starts at the four and a half minute mark. Good gracious, somebody wants to hump Justin Siller.

Annnnnnd then at 5 minutes, we go into some kind of gay-sounding R&B. Oy.

6:05 and beyond -- I could watch that hook and lateral 50 more times. They look like they're having fun! Awesome.

It's incredible how much of a difference this look gives the offense. When you have a drop-back passer like Curtis and things aren't going well, there's not much you can do to shake it up. But with Siller, you can just go option all day and see what's working. And even a good defense would be more vulnerable if they don't know exactly what's coming!

I see no reason to start Curtis again, either. What are we trying to do? If they want the program to improve, they need to give Siller playing time. As 'dowd pointed out to me a few weeks ago, Ohio State had designs on the national title when the season started.... then when they got throttled at USC, they benched Boeckman and started Pryor because, why not? Same principle applies here, minus the national title hopes part.

One more fun moment, in the postgame interview (which you can find over at BigTenNetwork.com) with Siller, he actually said they "beat a really good Michigan team." Oh, Justin, you're so young and silly.

The only game I see Painter coming into would be the IU game, just cuz its his last year here as well as against the rival. But i dont see him starting that game much less any other. I guess we'll find out what Tiller has to say at the conference tomorrow.

Hello, it's me again to beat that dead horse -

Watch the video and notice that receivers are not jumping, reaching, diving for passes - and are actually in position to gain extra yards, or make game-winning laterals.

There is one pass that wasn't ideal though- to Wasikowski, he threw it low and Jerry would have scored had it been above his knees...but I get your drift.

NUMBER FUN:

Painter's last THREE full starts:

62/114 - 613 yds
1 TD - 5 INT
-3 Yards Rushing

Siller's one start:
21/34 - 266 yds
3 TD - 0 INT
77 Yards Rushing (1 TD)

Now the fun part, let's give Siller THREE full starts:

63/102 - 798 yds
9 TD - 0 INT
231 Yards Rushing (3 TD)

Let's reduce these by 1/3 to account for the "Yeah, but Painter played OSU and PSU" Factor

42/68 - 532 Yards
6 TD - 0 INT
154 Yards Rushing (2 TD)

Final comparison over three full starts:

Painter:
62/114 - 613 yds
1 TD - 5 INT
-3 Yards Rushing

Siller:
42/68 - 532 Yards
6 TD - 0 INT
154 Yards Rushing (2 TD)

Coach, if you're reading this blog, please take this into consideration.

please please please. it's called a "hook and lateral". ya know because one reciever runs a "hook" then he laterals it to another reciever. stupid announcers have started calling it a hook and ladder...luckily the Purdue radio guys got it right.

pump fakes? Quarterbacks since Orton have been allowed to do those.

boilerdowd said...

Travis, they've been illegal...just like throwing to the running back in the flat.

Collin. Hook and Latter is the actual term used by football coaches and players.

but... I admire your moxy.

J Money said...

Anon -- Note I called it a hook and lateral, too, because that's what it is. Some call it one, some call it the other... but it's literally a hook and lateral. that's not opinion -- that's what they do on the play.

If someone runs a curl and I start calling it a "Carl," does that stop it from being a curl?

No, not in Alabama, Georgia and northern Florida where they are both one and the same.
