Kramer, coming off of re-setting surgery earlier this week, fought valiantly on defense...and Johnson and Jackson both tried to do what they could to keep it close offensively, but Illinois really had this game under control from early in the contest.Purdue's defense simply looked perplexed and over-matched as Illinois ran pick-and-rolls over and over and Purdue failed to rotate. In fact, if it wasn't for Kramer's peskiness, this one might have been even worse. The Illini didn't shoot exceptionally well (44.6%) and even lost the rebounding battle (34-31)...but Purdue's poor shooting, and awful 3-point shooting, was too much to overcome.

For the second game in a row, Smooge did not score double-digits...and KG joined him in an effort of futility by scoring only four points. Here are their lines:

This is the problem...and part of it can be blamed on fatigue since our Boilers are so shallow. But both of these guys were pretty reliable last season...conversely, this season, E'Twaun has been inconsistent at best, and Grant has been almost non-existent (offensively). Hummel's injury hurts, but the loss of these two has dogged our Boilers in more than a handful of games.
Big Concerns
Sorry gents...and while I appreciate your optimism, those that tried to tell me Purdue had a chance a BT title, might now see what I was seeing after the Buckeye loss...Our Alma Mater is in trouble. In fact, I only count 3-4 more likely wins as things look right now...everything else is either a toss-up or unlikely. A 21-win record going into the Big Ten tourney would probably yield Purdue an 8-12 seed in the dance...especially with what looks to be a pretty lousy second-half to the BT schedule.
I'm not saying the season's over, but our Boilers just got whipped by an OK Illinois team; this surely isn't a good sign.

CBS' Vern Lundquist called Smooge Keaton Moore for much of the game. Do you think CBS can afford a print out that shows every player's name in the line-up?

At this point, I think Painter needs to take a long, hard look at letting Hummel sit out as long as is needed to get his back right. I've had back problems for months now, and mine aren't has bad as his. A deeper bench is needed and the other players need to step up. JJ is impressing me, but the others tend to not show up too often. Don't worry about the BT title now, worry about getting into March.
CBS gives their announcers all the info they need - Lundquist is a washed-up announcer that needs to be sent out to pasture, as are most of the CBS announcers.

Paul -- I said that to dowd a few times recently. Last weekend I said if we lose a couple more B10 games we should just sit him down for the season. Let his back get right and sacrifice the season. We're way too shallow as it is and risking Hummel's health isn't worth it.
This team has no shot at the Final Four so why push it? Even if fully healthy and shooting well, they need more than a seven-man rotation to advance in tournament play.

Looking Ahead to 2010
It is a hard statement to make, but sometimes it is the best thing to do. Painter only plays 7 guys right now - he needs to get more of them rotated in and used to Big11 play. Loosing a good player because of transfer (we will not name him) doesn't help much either. I just really don't want to see Hummel physically screwed up at the end of the year. He'll try to play even though he probably knows he shouldn't. That becomes the coaches job to make sure he gets healthy.
Did anyone catch Gregg Anthony's Bobby Knight fucked up reference? He meant to say that Painter and Weber had influences in their coaching styles from Keady...but that dumbass kept saying Bobby Knight over and over. Tell me someone else heard that. Fucking clown shoes!
