For a few days, if you're a Purdue fan, you thought Robert Marve was a Purdue lean...especially if you visit GBI regularly. But, when his announcement was officially made, many Purdue fans got anxious as he said "I'll be attending...the University of...Purdue."
Honest mistake, but that made that mini-presser more-than-interesting for some. Honestly, I didn't watch it. While I'm excited about the prospect of Marve coming to God's Country, I was pretty-much done with following it...speculation was rampant, he had been slow to make his decision...and at that point, did it really matter?
It's official, so now it does matter- here's why-
Marve is a legit talent...but his commitment to Danny Hope might be even-more beneficial than some are willing to admit. Hope's staff, like last season, is hitting the Sunshine State hard...and many of those kids that might become Boilers remember the news their Freshman year as Marve completed his record-setting high school career with a dramatic come-from-behind State Championship victory. Shortly after, Marve was named Florida's Mr. Football.
If you remember playing sports in high school, you remember watching the best upper-classmen and hoping you could follow in their shoes in a few years...perhaps a few of them are still thinking this way as Hope zig-zags across the state.

Rough Ride
After breaking Tim Tebow's Florida high school state yardage record and ending his high school career, Marve looked like he might be starting as a true Freshman at Miami. But, in July prior to his Frosh season, he was riding in a car that barrel-rolled in a violent wreck. Following the wreck, Marve had multiple injuries to his non-throwing hand...one being a nearly-severed pinky. The injuries suffered caused him to redshirt in the fall of '07.
After being named the starter for the '08 season in Miami, Marve got into a bit of trouble. He got into an altercation that led to him breaking a mirror on a car and then fleeing police to avoice being arrested. As a result, he was suspended for Miami's home opener last season.
The next week, he was welcomed to college football by the Florida Gators- a tough way to begin...Make no mistake, Marve's only season as a starter was rocky. He averaged just-over 100 yards passing per game while splitting time with another quarterback...he threw 9 TDs, but 13 Int. while only completing 54% of his passes. But, in relief duty, Marve made a gritty comeback by both passing and rushing to beat a solid Wake Forest team. Just for a point of refernce, Marve's back-up, another Freshman completed 47% of his passes, had 16 TDs and 7Int. Neither set the world on fire...and that's probably the problem with Marve in the eyes of The U fans- he was supposed to be the next great QB; but he just looked like a Freshman...and as anybody knows, the back-up is always extremely popular...no different here.
At the end of the season, Marve was suspended, yet-again- This time for the Emerald Bowl. The suspension was a result of either a miscommunication of class schedule requirements or flat-out cutting of class (depending on whom you believe). But, the whole season left Marve and Coach Shannon at odds, and Marve wanted out.
The fued left everyone looking pretty lousy, in my opinion...But Marve's high school coach thought Shannon handled it poorly, and because of that, lost respect for Shannon.
Looking Forward
And that leads us to what happened this afternoon...As Marve made his announcement, he intimated that he won't get his chance to lead the offense until he sits out for the year. But perhaps, this isn't an open/shut case. There will be two other quarterbacks vying for the position of starting quarterback- The 6'5", strong-armed Caleb TerBush and the extremely-athletic Rob Henry. Both of these quarterbacks might develop a great deal in the next year as neither has seen a ton of action under center...even in high school. But, for those of you who don't know Henry, one way or another, you probably will in the near future. It seems he's too good of an athlete to keep off the field- perhaps it will be in the shotgun at Ross-Ade? Time will tell.
Before that battle begins, you can be guaranteed Purdue will have one of the most-highly touted scout team quarterbacks in America, in Robert Marve...After that, let the competition begin.

Nice information on Marve... Hopefully his side of the stories are the correct one and he will work better up here than in the distraction-filled city of Miami.
It's too bad we didn't land Jordan Barnes (listed in the Nike Combine article), but I'm looking forward to Henry getting on campus.
One thing is for sure, this surely gives Hope a ton more credibility in recruiting the state of Florida. I hope Marve keeps his head on straight and helps the team.
You know as the 2010 season rolls around, one of those three QBs will leave the school. That just sounds like too much competition, unless, as Dowd says, Henry gets on the field with a different roll in the offense.
More than anything, I'm wondering if Marve is just over-hyped. But his coming here does help Hope.
We'll know in about a year and one-half- I think he's probably a "good get" for the program...even if he never plays a down.
Matt Hinton thinks Purdue fans are naive and stupid....
http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/football/blog/dr_saturday/post/Headlinin-No-we-ve-been-saying-Marve-not-?urn=ncaaf,165295
Not sure he really said that, Matt, but he isn't impressed with Roberto, it appears. I might point out to Hinton that Marve has played one year in college and just because he didn't set the world on fire doesn't mean he's a no-talent hack.
We see plenty that encourages us.
In the end, Hinton will look like a boob or a genius in a few years...Marve has a great opportunity to prove a lot of people wrong.
Wow, what a pile of bullshit. You spend the entire post using vague and apologetic language trying to make Marve’s stint at Miami look like anything other than what it was; an utter disaster caused entirely by Marve himself. He has shown himself to be a complete punk, only concerned about himself. Purdue fans should be embarrassed over how your school got down on their knees for a player who couldn’t stay within the rules at Miami. Think about that for a second. We’re talking about the home of the 7th Floor Crew and Luther Campbell. He is too much of an asshole to stay out of trouble one of the most corrupt programs in the history of college football. And Purdue chased him like a smitten schoolgirl.
Purdue fans crow on about how they only recruit quality young men who go to class. What a joke. The only reason Purdue doesn’t sign high-profile recruits with checkered pasts is because until now, none of them even knew Purdue existed. And what happens when the first big name recruit to ever even sniff in Purdue’s direction shows some interest? They bend over backwards to get him in West Lafayette.
Wait, he led police on a high speed pursuit, and couldn’t be bothered to go to class? When other schools sign players like this they are cheaters. When Purdue does it they are just giving a troubled young man a second chance. Is that how it works?
After this, there should be no more posturing from Purdue fans about how your school does it “the right way”. You want to win just like the big boys, and will do whatever it takes just like the Miamis, Tennessees, and LSUs of the world. You just haven’t had the opportunity until now.
I expect you to cut the kid some slack because he now wears the gold and black, but this post is just beyond embarrassing and hypocritical. My favorite part was the “miscommunication of class schedule requirements”. That made me laugh out loud. Thanks for that.
Wow, Bill Lynch reads and comments on Boiled Sports.
Maybe it was Charles W.
Well, U of Miami IS a bastion of HIGH, HIGH disciplanarian standards and academic INTEGRITY... they NEVER have been in trouble before, RIGHT?
Please, as if a vandalized car rearview mirror and 3 missed English classes (with an additional tardy) are MAJOR, MAJOR problems for Miami... high speed chase MY ASS!
Fuck off Otm Skank, you idiot asshole.
I'll quote myself here from earlier in the week-
(5/10/09)
"I don't care if he comes or goes elsewhere...but may the best man win the quarterback job in West Lafayette...and if he comes, I hope he's ready to either stay out of trouble or get arrested often- West Lafayette PD has a lot less to do than does the Miami PD."
I didn't contradict that in the above post, and I'll stand by that. He deserves no more slack than any Purdue student- which isn't a ton of slack. And if he can't keep his nose clean, he doesn't deserve the chance to play.
By the way, I wrote the post to become educated about Marve and the situation- I read from about 20 sources and linked 10, I believe...many with two sides of the perspective. I understand Shannon was in a position in which he had to take a tough stance on everything...BECAUSE of gentlemen like the 7th floor crew. His policy of "if I'm awakened, for any reason, by a phone call after midnight, guilty or not, someone's getting suspended" is a tough line to draw, but understandable.
If Hope becomes the master of reclamation projects, I might not be as open to research each case, but, since this is the first time he's done it, I think it's fair to listen to both sides of the story.
Shank, I always appreciate when women stop by the site to post, so thanks for weighing in...but the whole "woman scorned" bit isn't befitting...Regardless, we appreciate your patronage.
I bet Otm Shank is an angry IU douche bag furious with jealousy. And when did Purdue say they recruited "quality young men" and we do things the "right way"? Obviously you don't follow Purdue football because we have had some very sketchy players in the near past that are selfish and get arrested. And if the "right way" is being mediocre at best in the Big Ten, I think we need to look for a new way of doing things. Congrats Coach Hope and keep up the good work. Boiler Up!
Well, OTm Skank is just clueless... typical of a hater.
Do we really need to point out that Purdue doesn't tolerate criminals? Justin Siller cheated in a class and he's been booted -- forever -- from the football program. And he was our future. So just shut up, because you look like a fool.
Also, to suggest no quality players have "sniffed" Purdue just shows that OTM Skank has been following college sports for about...ohhh... a year or so.
Ever heard of Drew Brees? Kyle Orton? Glenn Robinson? Carl Landry? I mean, these are just in recent years.... but I know they don't count because they aren't smart quality guys like Michael Irvin who went to "DA U!"
