Weekend Sports Notes

Series might not come to a pause
According to a few different sources, the Purdue/UND series might not be put on pause in a few seasons as UND was reporting a while back. Jack Swarbick sees the importance of the second-longest running rivalry on the Irish's schedule.

Purdue and UND have beel playing eachother consecutively since the mid-40s...Navy since the 20s.

While I really don't want to see the Manatee and co. removed from Purdue's schedule, I really don't want to hear about Morgan Burke kissing Swarbick's ass to get a deal done. So if they start acting like the stuck-up ladies that they are during negotiations, let 'em go, Morgan.

Meat in the MMA
Former Purdue team clown and DT, Matt Mitrione will be heading a new direction as an athlete and entertainer in the near future. He'll be fighting in the MMA by way of a reality series in which a handful of former NFL players will be trying to make a new name for themselves in the same venue. Good luck, Meat!

Following in his whiny Daddy's footsteps

Marco Takes Over His Rightful seat
For a few years, Danica has held the throne as the whiny princess on AGR...Not anymore.

After a 3-or-4 lap battle with Patrick, Andretti overtook 5th place in the Bombardier 550. He went on to finish in that place. But that wasn't enough for Andretti. He of course had to get all bitchy after the race telling everyone that Danica doesn't understand the AGR team attitude as do the other three drivers who race for his Dad.

Hmmm. This is the same guy who's taken out his team mates on multiple occassions (Franchitti and Kanaan in different seasons)...the same guy who never takes responsibility for anything...and the most-recent target of his vitriolic speak is Ms. Patrick.

Danica is a whiner, generally...but this season she's pretty much kept her mouth shut and done her job...finishing in the top-5 more already, than she has in any previous season. But she's a free agent, so you can decide if she's actually grown up or she's just mimicking a Diva NFL WR in the same position.

Tiger's Back
Woods did something he usually doesn't do- won while not starting in the final group on Sunday. He was 4 back at the beginning of the day...and charged to a six-stroke differential on the day to win going away at the Memorial...The US Open at the monsterous Bethpage Black Course is just two weekends away.

Fed wins 14
Roger Federer won his 14th Grand Slam event in France yesterday as he edged closer to becoming the greatest player ever. Federer has never had great success on clay, but Nadal's exit from the tournament opened the door and he completed the job. Hopefully next year he has a chance to go through Rafa to win it so tennis snobs won't put an asterisk by this year's victory.

I really don't think this win is as noteworthy as his comments after the tournament. He was interviewed by EsPN later in the day and really wasn't too humble at all. The interviewer asked if he felt that like Sampras/Agassi, did Nadal make him a better player. He responded that he didn't think so...and instead, the rest of the men's professional tennis world should be thanking him for forcing them to raise their collective games. While he might be somewhat correct because he was so dominant in his early career, Nadal has pistol-whipped him on quite a few occassions in the last few years. False humility a la Kobe after game 2 of the finals isn't impressive, but neither is overly-compensatory cockiness when speaking of his biggest rival.

It's a wonder I was suprised by Marco's comments after the race. I should know better - his last name is Andretti which means he must bitch about something. Danica was racing for points. Why would she just yield a position to another driver, regardless of who they are? Marco is a punk.

I didn't get to hear Federer's comments but I thought that Serena's were just as interesting when she was bounced out the other day... she kept saying (i'm paraphrasing) that she wasn't upset that she lost because she knew her opponent wasn't responsible for making her lose and that all the mistakes were her own fault... I saw that on the WWL and wanted to scream at the TV. I couldn't believe how arrogant and whinny those comments were (and if I were the woman who beat her - which would be strange on a few levels - I'd be pissed).

I've always cheered for the Andrettis, but Marco is putting my loyalty to the test. I think hearing a 22-year old legacy say, "the kid will never learn" was my breaking point.

John- right on- he refers to other drivers as kids perpetually like he's a wise sage.

I grew up a Mario fan, but never liked Michael too much...mainly because of comments like this...plus they're both so nasal-y when they speak; that doesn't help anything.

Mario won at every level he raced...can't really say that for his Grandson. He can become great, but won't if he keeps thinking everyone's wrong except him.

The girls at Her Loyal Sons are going to die of boredom if the Purdue ND series doesn't take a hiatus.

Those poor ladies got it rough.

I don't mind if Danica doesn't keep her mouth shut. Mmmm, mouths.

Also, she can get into any position she wants....

(Let me see, anymore there? No, I'm done.)

Despite its reliance on tradition over most things, I wouldn't be overly surprised to find out that it is NBC that's encouraging UND to consider ending this 40-year rivalry. Adding a team from a large media market will boost ratings (Temple/Philly; Rutgers & Syracuse/NYC market; Georgia Tech/Atlanta), etc., or playing other schools with good academic reputations (and traditionally lousy football squads) will boost UND's record and eventually... ratings. Stanford, Duke, Vanderbilt, Rice, Northwestern have all had some recent success, but are traditionally Sisters Of The Poor in the grand scheme of things. Let's see which way Swarbrick jumps in this one.

Nice calls Gregg...we'll see in the coming months/years.

Gregg Z forced me to reconsider my words. I was *going* to say that the powderpuff ladies at ND couldn't stand the heat of competition with such a fine matinee at the helm. I was *going* to say think my kids threw him chubs at Seaworld, so he thought that NFL and collegiate football didn't require performance for reward. But of course Greggz' nuanced worldview turned me away from such naughtiness.

Instead I'll say suck it up, sissy-mary Domer's. Traditions are built on the competition of programs that rise and fall.

So open your mouth wide, Manitee, and swallow. Prissy powderpuff cheerleader.

Oh dear, excuse me...

Whuups, correction: Purdue-ND is a 62 consecutive year rivalry, with a grand total of 80 games played overall (dating back to an 1896 contest that Purdue won). That's more than the number of times Notre Dame has played Air Force and Army combined, equal to the total of games USC has played, and just 2 less games than Navy [source: College Football Data Warehouse]. But let's just toss that aside shall we? As J so sagely wrote, one way the Sacred Lady can "stop losing to the likes of the Purdue's of the world" is to take them off the schedule.

As far as young Marco... maybe time will smooth out the rough edges, but as an old F1 mark, he reminds me of the notorious Andrea de Cesaris-- a fast driver usually in top-flight equipment, but was more brave than talented, and had a habit of being in the wrong place at the wrong time and caused far too many accidents. The only think that kept "de Crasharis" around was his wealth and family connections. Hmmm.

SeaWorld has matinees? I'll bet they are only on in the afternoons.

Well said re: the PU-ND series; we don't need to give away the store to keep it from being interrupted. If it does come to that, it wouldn't bother me to never play them again - ever. I just hope we have possession of the Shillelagh Trophy and that it makes a nice doorstop for our associate AD or associate SID or whatever.

Furthermore, Barry Alvarez is a loudmouth who ought to mind his own business.

If UND wants to drom Purdue or keep them on the schedule, I'm 95% sure it will be motivated by money. Everyone wants to play them because they get a cut of the NBC money. Utah is will to trudge to South Bend in 2010 for a cut of that money. It seems most of the things going on in college football these days is driven by money.

I'm glad to see that Meathead is keeping busy.
