Purdue lands Illinois QB

A few things stood out to me when I read this article about Purdue receiving a verbal commitment from Illinois high school QB, Sean Robinson, who Rivals has listed as the 10th best dual-threat QB in the nation.

First being that the dude had 23 scholarship offers and Purdue got him. That says a lot to me about what kind of recruiters are in place. They weren't all schmo schools either; Iowa, Nebraska, Boston College, Illinois, Wisconsin, and Louisville were among them.

Next up was his quote “The (Purdue) campus itself as a whole is really beautiful. The town is not a huge Chicago-type area, but there’s plenty of stuff to do.” Really? Plenty of stuff to do. Shh, no one tell him the truth. I'm not sure what he considers to be plenty of stuff, but I think he may have the wrong definition. Well that is, unless he considers wondering where all the girls went once Winter hits to be stuff. Then there's plenty of that.

Later it says that "Robinson was drawn to the Boilermakers by their quarterback tradition. The opportunity to learn under recent Miami transfer Robert Marve also helped seal the deal." Is that a good thing? Maybe Marve has turned it around, but I'm not ready to hand him the keys to our future QBs yet. It seems a bit like asking Glenn Robinson to mentor Robbie Hummel.

So I'm more pleased with signing this young man than Marve. It does bode well for recruiting as you said.

\Also wanted the Colts to draft Leaf instead of daddy's boy. So I know nothing.

I'm always reminding people to look at the quarterbacks that Purdue has placed in the NFL (Brees, Orton, Painter?) versus the stellar receivers (Daniels, Stubblefield, Stratton, etc.) that don't make it. (Does Standeford on the Lions count? It is Detroit.)

If you're a quarterback looking for big numbers and a shot at the NFL, Purdue has to be on your short list.

A lot of these "dual threat" quarterbacks we get that are great athletes got converted to other positions under Tiller. It will be interesting to see if Hope takes the same approach of going for pure athletes and molding them, or keeping players to what they know.

He looks like he could compete for hte starting job for 2010, making it a very crowded race with Tyler, Henry, Siller, Marve, and TerBush. That is six guys for one spot. I guess the good thing is that since mobile QB's are more open to injuries we have a solid stable ready to step in if the main guy goes down.

Right now I would probably give Marve the edge to start simply because he has the name recognition and most hype. I really like Henry though, especially with the attitude he took of getting other Florida guys to come with him. He seems like a real leader, so I would love to see him get his shot.

They either won't all be here by then or they won't all be QBs.

I am now excited about football recruiting. He is impressive.

That last paragraph was funny. Another parallel...Melvin Buckley would be a great mentor for Lewis Jackson.

NIU is 1-32-1 all time vs the Big Ten.

Anyone else miss Melvin Buckley?

Anyone? Anyone? I'm serious. Where are you?
