This Glass is half full...with enthusiasm!!
IU's new athletic director, Fred Glass is brimming with enthusiasm and good ideas for the coming football season in Bloomington. The first great idea is officially dedicating the new-look Memorial Stadium on October 3...what was formerly known as "Picture Day" in Bloomington will be called "Dedication Day" this year as the Buckeye fans will fill about 2/3 of IU's stadium and will help create a beautiful illusion, at least until kick-off.
Glass also has created an area for kids to play...inside the stadium near the open end of Memorial Stadium. He wants to see children throwing Nerf footballs during the games...and while this idea doesn't say big-time-college-football atmosphere, it does say high school football game...fitting, I guess.
It's too bad really, I do like what IU has done with the new addition of their stadium; it looks very good and very big time...and the addition of the retro-1930s/40s-style scoreboard will remind all of the IU fans of the good ole days when the Hoosiers finished the season ranked...nearly half of the seasons IU football teams finished in the top-25 ocurred in the 1940s ('45, '46)...so paying homage to that era makes sense.
Students...from ANY college can buy tickets for $5 for any IU football game. This low price is focused directly on an effort to fill the seats and bring enthusiasm back to Memorial Stadium. With the vision of Glass and the rest of the IU athletic department, I can almost guarantee that this will be an unforgettable season in Bloomington.
This will go on the shelf with
Indiana Memorial Stadium,
Indiana University football,
IU Athletic department genius,

Play 13!
Defend the Rock!
At least it will make getting tickets to this year's Bucket game that much easier. I might only have to spend $15
Ooooh, somebody was cranky last night.....
We must defend this playground!
From the Indianapolis Star:
http://www.indystar.com/article/20090728/SPORTS0601/907280363/IU+s+Glass+wants+festive+football+atmosphere
...coach Bill Lynch said. "Certainly in the recruiting process, all kids are looking for a wow factor, and they'll see it not only with the facility, but experience it when they come to a game."
If I'm a football recruit, I don't think rabid little kids oblivious to the game are going to sway my decision making.
Come to Indiana! They let us write on the sidewalk...with CHALK! Wow factor, indeed.
Also, if you're trying to make football games more similar to the Little 5 atmosphere why are you running out tailgaters?
Chris -- comment of the week, my friend.
If we gave such an award.
Right, because a huge drum and a choo choo train really impresses recruits.
I'm not really sure why you're focusing on an area for kids, in an end zone that was going to be open anyway. I'd say a new football complex and making sure the stadium doesn't look like crap is more important to recruits.
In this corner... huge drum... choo choo train.
And in this corner... a rock.
I would think Winning attracts recruits, obviously Anonymous is right it's not like we have anything to brag about when it comes to Ross-Ade... except the fact that R-A has had more big games on tv the last decade or so than Memorial, and that Purdue has consistently sent players to the NFL. I think Hope is doing the best thing right now in just getting people to not take the "status quo" crap and actually compete... that spirit gets infectious and hopefully the fans will follow his lead ( we will have our chances, see 9/26, 10/17, and 10/24)
Oh, and while this post was poking fun at IU's attempts to improve things, keep in mind we gladly rip our own program when they make dumb decisions or institute stupid features (i.e., Shout, etc.).
J-Money... what do you think needs to be done with the south endzone of R-A? I personally don't like the fact that our "tunnel" is inflatable. It looks tacky and I would love to find a way to get permanent seats down there making the stadium an oval. However we barely get 55,000 in R-A as it is and the product hasn't been good the last couple of years. Just wondering what you Boiled sports guys thought
We've discussed this among ourselves, too, and I think our general consensus was that yes, we'd love to see that filled in so it's a truly enclosed stadium. Contrary to some who knock us, R-A can get loud and it would be ever louder if fully-enclosed.
The argument against it is two-fold (at least): 1) it might restrict the view of the pretty campus and old alums might not like that (or increased noise, for that matter), and 2) it's expensive and perhaps not justified. Until we can sell that place out more regularly and have more of a demand for tickets, I can't argue the fact that it doesn't make sense to spend X-million to add...what? 5,000-10,000 more seats, give or take? I'd love to see it, but I highly doubt it'll ever happen. I think they'd build a second deck on the East side before that... which makes even less sense.
There is so much they could do with that south end zone, but it makes no sense until they start selling out most home games. They could still keep the sight lines of the campus if they wanted to by revamping the entire south end. But again, why pay X-millions for seats that won't be filled.
That's Hope's job. Win, and they will come. Go 7-5, and it stays the same.
I think the South Endzone at Ross Ade looks small time...and it's a flat-out lousy place to watch a football game. It's need to be changed for 40 years, but for some reason the Athletic Dept. continually overlooks that end of the stadium.
I don't care for the inflatable tunnel either...but I don't like Rowdy, Shout or the fact that many of the flags with which the cheerleaders lead the team onto the field aren't Purdue colors.
I don't like the term "Boiler up" because it's derivative of "Cowboy up".
All that said, there's a whole lot more I do like...
But IU's athletic department has been perpetually lame with their efforts and really doesn't stick with anything long enough to see if it works. At least the Nerf kids zone wasn't copied off of another college football tradition...like the Rock, the Walk and IU's Purdue/ND blended first down march, the fact that IU's unis are copies of OK's...did IU get a new press box with their new seats or did they keep the dated one they had?
May I ask what you DO like about the Purdue tradition Boilerdowd?
I like....
hail purdue, I am an American, boiler up, third down hand motions, 1234 Firstdown, drum, Worlds Collide, the song played on the jumbrotron as the players walk down to the field, golf course tailgating, boilermaker special, victory bell, black jerseys old gold pants, W Flag
I dislike...
shout, shout, shout, shout, arby's commercials, pefcu commercials, commercials instead of band, all white jerseys, all black jerseys, losing to ranked teams, not letting cars into golf course until 8am
Sadly I don't think Shout is going anywhere just because ESPN has started to notice it as a "tradition" @ Purdue. They should probably have just done "livin on a prayer" for the 4th quarter beginning via basketball, but @ least the old people (somewhat) get into it. The only time that Shout can be tolerated is if Neil Armstrong or Drew Brees leads it. I like the train formation that the band has for the opening I just think traditions only become something meaningful after decades among decades of success. Coach Hope... succeed!!!
I can't stand Shout in the slightest, but I too think that it's here for the time being.
Perhaps we could eliminate the incredibly hackneyed and painful introduction for now.
