The Helmet Schedule Is Out: Football Nerds Everywhere Celebrate By Asking Girls To "Give Some Helmet"

The helmet schedule that we all get excited about every year is out for 2009 (actually, it's apparently been out a while but until BHGP announced it, I didn't notice -- I rely on BHGP for all my helmet-related and horse porn-related updates). It was definitely neat the first time we saw it but now it's becoming like the release of Madden for PlayStation -- kind of exciting but the hype is starting to outweigh the fun.

To combat this, the creators at SimonOnSports went a new route this year, using retro helmets for each team. For some, the retro looks just like the current. For teams like the Boilers, they chose a helmet, interestingly, that our guys barely ever wore -- it was for the 1969 season only, I believe.

As for the complete schedule, you can download it here.

Oh, also.....
Is this perhaps the most confused helmet you've ever seen? A big, muscular, apparently naked warrior being hugged by a rainbow. What's more intimidating than that?

...Swiped part and parcel from the excellent The Helmet Project website. Not sure how I stumbled across this one-- I think I was trying to Google the old Oklahoma State logo (with the "round" lettering). All D-1, D-II, Pro (and even some D-III and NAIA teams) football helmets past and present-- it's a fanboy/completist/nerdlinger's dream come true. To think that they have most of U. of Oregon's many, many designs!

SimonOnSports made a great choice for our helmet as Purdue in 1969was celebrating the university's centennial while all of college football was honoring the 100th anniversary of the first college football game played in 1869 between Princeton and Rutgers.

Many schools during the 1969 football season wore a similar football decal (emblazoned with '100') on their helmets. Purdue was in a unique position to celebrate both and incorporated the official university centennial logo onto their football decal. We finished 8-2 that year, so again, way to represent our Boilers SOS!

Do you suppose that warrior on UH's helmet is doing a certain type of dance?

So Schlabach, Maisel, and Forde did a top 40 football league draft as a part of the teams that are actually good enough to fight for a national championship. They based it on winning tradition, consistency on the last couple of decades, and fan environment... Sadly the Boilers didn't make the list (not surprised with the people who were picking the schools)... From the Big Ten THE bucknuts, Big Blue, Whiteout, Jump Around, the Kinnicks, and Sparty were drafted... here is the link... comments anyone

Did anyone else notice that on the MAC schedule listing Purdue is listed as Purdon't?

Anonymous -- Yes, and I sent a note asking about that and got a dickish response about how it "must have been a typo." He then compared it to the fact that I forgot to link to his site and acted all huffy like I'd ripped them off or something. Classy.

I'm assuming they have some allegiance to the MAC or a school within it and must be very proud of how the MAC has dominated Purdon't.

Oh, wait....

Also, that Purdon't thing is really clever. I am always impressed with the brainpower of those who use it.

J Money--- I am just as impressed when I hear Purdue people say "Loosiers"

I might care about the whole "Purdon't" thing, but it always seems to be IU (and now we can add MAC schools to this list) fans that use it. Maybe once one of these teams beat us, I'll let it get to me.

I like this stupid pun better-
Pur-over-due.

I think it fits and it makes more sense due to the fact that it is "due" not "do" at the end.

Anon -- you don't hear us do that, do ya? We're creative when it comes to ripping our rival.

Dowdy -- this assumes MAC-educated fans can spell. Hey-yo!
