UND "Fans" Continue Insisting They Know Who "Rivals" Are

Here we go. Let the minimizing of Purdue begin. We're not allowed to think of Notre Dame as a rival, it appears. Playing for 64 straight years and counting doesn't establish a rivalry, I guess.

This article, from the unbiased WNDU.com, refers to Purdue as a "rival" of Notre Dame. Yes, writer Angela DeCarlo put it in quotes. Because, you know, as she says:

On Saturday, Notre Dame and Purdue will meet for the 81st time. For the Irish, it's pretty much like any other game. But for the Boilers, it's one of their biggest of the season.

Indeed. Because we're just little Purdue. We're meaningless. We get it. Also, Angela... you're an ass. If you want to let Angela know she's an ass, feel free: angelo.dicarlo@wndu.com. It's not like she has anything else to do in South Bend.

And then there are the ultimate mouth-breathing, excuse-makers... these clowns.

That link is yet another wonderful example of the stupendously blinding arrogance that goes with -- and is required for -- Notre Dame fandom.

They go through each team they play and belittle any team that "claims" Notre Dame is a rival. And the only one they say is a rival? USC, of course. And, class, do you know who USC's rival is? That's right, UCLA.

And as for Purdue?

Purdue (zzzzzzzz) -- claim to be a rival. Not even close. Not even close to within eyesight of a range in the proximity of close to being a rival.

Okay. Uh, guess what, fellas? You don't get to decide. Many programs hate Notre Dame because of reasons that people like you personify!

Purdue and Notre Dame have met 80 times. They're both in Indiana. They've met every year since 1949. (You know, back when Notre Dame was relevant in the way they believe they still are.) And they even play for a rivalry trophy. I know, I know, wait! Don't tell me! It means more to us than to you! Right? How'd I know you imbeciles would say that?

I guess in the end they're right. It's not a rivalry. Indiana is our rival. It's hard for Notre Dame to have a rival, being without a true conference affiliation. In those situations, I guess you just make up who your rival is, and in this case, they've chosen a program -- USC -- that should make anyone laugh out loud when hearing the two football programs compared. Sure, in the 1940s, Notre Dame had a claim. Not anymore.

They wrap up yet another stellar piece of fifth-grade level writing thusly:

This doesn’t, and isn’t meant to, belittle our opponents that are not rivals.

Of course not. Especially those that smoke you this year.

It’s just that, by definition, any given team can only really have 1-2 rivals. We have USC. USC has us and UCLA. Pitt has WVU. Purdue has Being Awake. Michigan has Graduation Rates.

Ah, I see. You can have two rivals. That covers USC having their real one and the one Notre Dame made up. Oh, and we're still going with Purdue being "boring," eh? Solid.

So how does this happen? How can we be everyone’s rival?

You're not.

We’re ND. That’s how.

Teams look at Notre Dame on the schedule, and they circle the game. They get fired up. Their fans get fired up. This is why ND gets the best from its opponents week in and week out – for THEM, it’s a rivalry game.

No, most teams, fans, players, mascots, concession stand workers, policemen, parking attendants and other rational human beings.... they all just hate you and your arrogance. Posts like this are supporting exhibits.

For US, it’s another week. Which makes the challenge even that much greater.

Ah, here we go. The patented, Notre Dame, our wins should be valued more because they're even HARDER than your wins. This is similar to how whenever they lose, the other team or QB is just amazing -- they'd have to be in order to beat the Domers, right? I mean, either that or the officials are to blame.

No matter how boring Purdue might be, for them this is a rivalry game, and they’ll give us their best shot (as boring as that shot may be), and a much better shot than they gave NIU.

I hope the players think Purdue is boring, too. You assclown.

ND needs to be ready, each and every week. After all, almost every week is Rivalry Week when you’re Notre Dame, right?

Only in your head. As I said, I guess it's just as good as any excuse to explain why you lose -- other teams get more "up" for Notre Dame, so it's harder to win.

Yes, we get it. We're not your rival. And that's fine.

We still hate you.

Its really quite pathetic to see you type all of this up for the simple fact that the Irish don't consider PU a rival. Big freakin deal. Why waste the time or energy to gripe and sound like a little girl because a university (that you supposedly don't care about)doesn't hold you to as high of a standard as USC. Or even Navy for that matter. At least Navy and ND have a history beyond simply playing each other every year. Yeah they really do. Google it. Whats the overall record between you and ND? Do you really think that sports fans across the nation give PU football half the respect they have for ND. Sure a good portion of the nation hates ND football and for more reasons than their arrogance, but the respect is still there. I'm sure you can't fathom that though. Your ignorance won't allow it. From a skim-through, this site pretty much sums up what most sports fans that have had to endure a confrontation with a boiler like yourself: pure ignorance. Do you not have enough going on within your own program so that you need to post idiotic crap about other schools? Namely ND and IU. Every university has homers, but my god. All your type does is make excuse after excuse. Why your program is as good as this or that program. And there are never any facts. Complain and post about other schools to divert attention from the boredom of your own? Just speculating. Hell with your basketball team currently experiencing brief significance, it is really shedding light to the rest of the nation on what type of fans many of you are. You guys were getting trashed on the message boards in March for all of the ignorant crap you were spewing. Painter seems like a great up and coming coach, but if you honestly think that after your class with Hummel is gone that you will still be (even somewhat consistently) significant in the tournament you're delirious. Nothing will change because many of you PU fans have been this way for years, but maybe rather than point your finger at ND and complain about their arrogance, take the gold and black goggles off and take a look at yourselves...seriously. Yeah I know that was deep. While you have your foot in the spotlight try acting like some respectable fans rather than like a bunch of ignorant idiots. A lot of you portray yourselves as being quite un-educated when it comes to sports. Excuse all the grammatical errors within this comment. I'm sure they're several.

Thanks guys for reminding me of my ND hatred. Completely forgot for a while.

Maybe somebody needs to tell the Domers that USC probably thinks about ND the same way ND apparently thinks about Purdue.

ND hasn't been in the same class as USC for quite some time and probably never will be again.

Tell us how you really feel...

J, let the babies have their bottles. They want to believe that USC is their rival, let them. You know what that means? Their "rival" has kicked the crap out of them for the last decade, and then some. If fact, their "rival" has everything that UND fans have been pining for: consistant BCS rankings, center stage on the national scene, bowl wins against good teams, a coach that can do more than recruit and eat, and the list goes on.

Don't blow a gasket on these people. They just think we are another cake on their spongy soft schedule. Let them. I just hope they don't use the boo-boo on Pickle's toe as any sort of excuse, regardless of the outcome of the game.

I grew up in the South Bend media market, and most of my friends were ND/IU fans. You know the type, the ultimate bandwagon fans who can't stick with just one school because they want to be associated with winning and success.

Now, when I get grief from a Domer, I look at them and say "What year did you graduate from ND?" And 99% of the time, they didn't. Yes there are nice ND fans/alums, but I know that the alum base really hates the fan base more then they want to admit because of all of the money they bring into the university.

As for the first post trolling our site is concerned, thank you for repeatedly calling us idiots and ignorant. Your extremely well written post clearly demonstrates a top notch education, both from a grammatical and historical perspective. An ND fan making a claim that we constantly make excuses about losing is the epitome of irony. Bravo! By the way, what year did you graduate from UND?

I am proud to say that I am a graduate of the Electrical and Computer Engineering Technology program at Purdue. I wear Purdue apparel around the office, even though I work (and now am a graduate student) at Northwestern University. Being a Boilermaker is more than just following athletics for most of us because we have dedicated a lot of time and effort obtaining degrees at one of the most respected and renowned universities in the country.

Brad is spot-on. I have friends who went to ND, and was actually a guest of their athletic department for one weekend (the 2004 Purdue game in South Bend, as it turns out-- the one where Orton carved up these guys like a roast), and they were well-adjusted, genuinely nice folks who were proud of their school. Superfans-- anybody's superfans-- are an insufferable lot, but sheer delusional arrogance of the Domers take it to another lever entirely. Casey the troll's arguments are about as salient as the current UND football program is relevant. Remember my friend, the University of Chicago and Army once were the most feared and respected college football teams in the land-- how have they been doing of late? As for Notre Dame, they have had exactly 5 winning seasons (plus one .500 campaign) since 1999-- hardly the stuff of a football superpower. Despite all of the inherent recruiting advantages this program has (including its own TV network) I daresay that sort of record comes dangerously close to the definition of "mediocrity."

Notre Dame, more like...Notre LAME! HEYOHHHHHH!

Seriously, Notre Dame can suck it, arrogant pricks.

As for their real "rival," to borrow a few stats from Gene Wojciechowski, Weis is 0-4 against the Trojans with an average margin of defeat of 24 points. They haven't beaten USC since Bob Davie was there. Since 1996, they've had as many head coaches (3) as wins. Not to mention in the last two years they've managed to hang just 3 points total on the Trojans.

I don't consider Notre Dame a rival. I have too much hatred in my blood to consider them a rival. They are simply a big game against the team I hate most. They're probably the team I enjoy beating most, though Michigan and Ohio State are both up there as well.

But in this Boiler's mind, our rival is Indiana. They are the team that I can least stomach losing to, and to me, that's how you measure a rivalry.

Also, us insisting that we have a rivalry with ND despite their denying it makes us sound every bit as pathetic as the Irish sound when USC denies them as rivals.

So please, stop whining after the girl who doesn't want to date us, and let's just get back to hating that spoiled, loud mouthed, egotistical, self-important, delusional bitch.

Shawn, in the end, that's what I gave in to...it's fine, they're not our rival. IU is. UND is a bunch of pussies afraid to play us in basketball.

J Money said...

Oh, and Casey, you inbred moron... Try reading more than one post before trying to pigeonhole us. Go on back to your degree-less life, dreaming of Notre Dame being relevant again.

Unknown said...

Inbred moron...nice. Keeping it classy. You represent this site very well. Thanks to nearly all of you for proving my point. Nice red herring. Apparently, because I typed my first comment in five minutes at 1ish in the morning it equates to me not having a degree. Try not making an assumption after one post. Moron. I wasn't saying that ND is relevant, I was simply stating that you sound like a p***y whining about how ND doesn't give you the respect you think you your football program deserves. Who cares? You disgrace yourself and other boilers by spending so much time on this site b****ing and taking any opportunity to slam a school superior than yours. Maybe it is the inferiority complex since your school has never won anything. Ever. I don't know, but its quite obvious that boilers like yourself keep your school from getting the respect "it deserves."

Casey, if you have such a problem with Purdue fans, perhaps you should consider going back to the safe confines of your golden dome, where Weis is still worth his weight in cheeseburgers, Pickles' decision to take a knee rather than a sack resulted in turf toe, not vaginitis, and the whole world respects you, not just Dr. Lou.

I just have to ask, If they lose to Washington next week, can they still use the excuse of Ty's players because he did recruit most of Washington's team.

I think one way to look at it is that Notre Dame really has to look at USC as a rival, especially right now ...

Historically, as Casey points out, Navy is a "rival", although it should be obvious that there are two major flaws in that argument now: one is that the history in that series can be divided into two categories, "ancient history" and "annual Notre Dame wins", neither of which necessarily make a rivalry, and the other is that Navy already has a rival that dwarfs ND in comparison. (Well, in numeric terms. And rivalry terms.)

In terms of competitiveness, though, the only teams ND could really consider as rivals are Michigan and USC, and right now, no one's going to be really impressed with a win over Michigan (as we saw last year, and this year ... oh right, the Irish lost that game). So that leaves USC. And that kind of puts Notre Dame in the same situation that Indiana tends to find themselves in with respect to football ... their one major rival is consistently better than they are. (I think we can all agree to exclude the Akers/Mallory era from this discussion.)

I mean, this may be Carroll's worst team at USC, and if Weis can't beat this one, when will he do it?

If they don't place the same importance on the games against Purdue that we do with them, that's cool. I mean, they probably look at the Michigan State games the same way, right?

Also, for what it's worth, one of my earliest college football memories is of Anthony Davis on the cover of SI the week after USC rolled up 48 second-half points to beat Notre Dame 55-24 (it was 24-7 at the half). I don't know if that's relevant or not, I just like remembering it.
