CBS Sports Blogpoll -- Monday Edition

Our blogpoll for this week -- as of now -- is below:

RankTeamDelta
1 Florida
2 Texas
3 Alabama
4 LSU
5 Boise State
6 Southern Cal
7 Cincinnati 4
8 Ohio State
9 TCU
10 Iowa 13
11 Virginia Tech 1
12 Oklahoma State 1
13 Penn State 2
14 Miami (Florida) 5
15 Kansas 2
16 Mississippi
17 Nebraska 4
18 Missouri 2
19 Oregon 6
20 Auburn
21 Georgia Tech
22 Houston 12
23 South Florida
24 South Carolina
25 Brigham Young
Last week's ballot

Dropped Out: Oklahoma (#7), Georgia (#14), California (#18), Michigan (#22).

Thoughts....

Oklahoma -- I know you were #7 last week, but you're now 2-2. Enough is enough.
Georgia -- Same for you. Tough loss to a good LSU team, but you were at home and I thought SEC was super-tough? Man up.
California -- What a joke. Two weeks in a row getting absolutely manhandled. Adios.
Michigan -- Can't lose to a sub-.500 team and not drop.

Other thoughts...

No change in the top six.
Iowa has a hefty jump, which they deserve.
Houston stays ranked but one more bad showing and they're likely gone for good.
Auburn appears, as does South Florida -- 5-0 is impressive.
BYU is back... for now.

Thoughts welcome.

Come on guys, how about a little more love for the Canes. They are the only team with three wins over ranked teams and the loss was to a top 7 team in a monsoon. After seeing them in person they will be scary good in about a year. Harris is a great quarterback who will win a title at Miami.

What I like about this year is the number of schools that normally aren't even sniffing the T25 getting lots of love because they are doing well and earning it.

Travis, is the rating for next year or this year?

T-Mill -- When are you launching your Miami site?

I'm open to the idea of them getting more love, but I think #14 is pretty lovable for a team with a loss... and a bad loss. As I recall, the monsoon was on the Va Tech side of the ball, too, and the 'canes got smoked.

That said, I'll consider it. But I think you're a tad biased since your sex life hinges on Miami's performances.

Hey-yo!

lol, very good point. The 14 is probably pretty good, then they'll just move as teams fall in front of them since the schedule is much easier from here on out.

What exactly did Cincinnati do to deserve a four spot jump? That was Miami of Ohio they were playing, not Miami that T-Mill has decided to cheer for.

blr1426 -- I feel I've been giving Cinci less respect than they've deserved and they're now 5-0 AND some teams ahead of them lost.

Open to where you think they should be... but don't focus too much on movement in our poll -- give me your opinion more on where they should be in general.

Well, I suppose overall UC isn't too horribly high, though I'd have them below OSU and VaTech. I don't know enough about TCU to have an opinion on them, I just thought it was odd to move the Bearcats up on the strength of a win against Miami (OH), when one of the teams they passed dominated Indiana.

I think you're placing too much emphasis on record rather than how good a team is. Iowa is a good example of this. They beat Penn State, which was great, but they've also barely hung on against N Iowa and Arkansas State. Personally, I think Iowa beating Penn State said more about how overratted the Lions were than how good the Hawkeyes were. I'd have Iowa a good ten spots lower, with Penn State right behind them.

Another good example is Oklahoma. They play Miami (a top 15 team on your ballot) to within one point 1500 miles from home and you drop them out of the rankings?

Go BYU! Go Cougars Go!

Blr -- Record does matter, especially only 4-5 weeks in, I think. Only a few meaningful games have been played... and Oklahoma, for example, is 2-2! Sorry, but a .500 team doesn't belong in the rankings. I agree they're probably good -- and if they wind up with 8-10 wins, they'll be ranked fairly.

Iowa is 5-0 and I don't believe they played a 1-AA team this year -- sure, some cupcakes, but other programs feast on even tastier cupcakes. And sure Ark State gave them a run, but Iowa just came off a huge road win and still didn't let the letdown cause a loss. I give some credit there.

Again, though, just my opinions.

JMoney,

Northern Iowa is a 1-AA team. And they almost lost to them.

blr1426 said...

Look, I'm not saying record shouldn't matter at all, I'm simply saying that losing a game doesn't necessarily mean you're not a good team. Are you really more impressed by Iowa's 1 point win at home against FCS Northern Iowa than Oklahoma's 1 point loss at Miami? If so, my high school is 6-0 and I'll be looking for them to start picking up votes next week.

J Money said...

Point taken.

But do you think Oklahoma and Iowa have had exact same seasons except for those games you mention? Iowa is 5-0, Oklahoma is 2-2 with, yes, a loss to a good Miami team... and a loss to a lesser-conference team (BYU). Hard to act like those are similar.

I do agree, though, that the ranking should basically be who we think is good... but if that's the case, then I don't think Florida should ever drop, even if they lose a game since I think they're the best. Right?

Good points, though. Don't misunderstand...

Matt -- sorry, good point. Forgot about No. Iowa. Me stupee.

As far as not dropping Florida goes, I guess the idea would be that if they were to lose to Alabama then you would decide that you were wrong and Alabama was a better team, so at the very least you'd have to drop them to #2. If they were to lose to lesser competition it should be a signal that they are clearly not best team in the country.

Were they to lose a very close game at LSU this weekend sans Tim Tebow I would understand an argument that they were still the best team in the country (though not necessarily agree with it).
