All This Hate Isn't Good For Your Bowels

I look around and see this week being called "hate week" in a lot of places. You've got PSU trying admirably to make their manufactured rivalry with MSU mean something. You've got Minnesota supporters resorting to rankings I've never heard of to bash Iowa, while Iowa slaps right back with some admittedly funny shots at the Minny football program. And, of course, you've got the slack-jaws from Columbus and Ann Arbor doing their typical strutting around, pretending anyone outside of Columbus or Ann Arbor really cares about their game (and, of course, throwing infantile tantrums when anyone has the temerity to report anything or opine on their program).

It's funny. It's been an exciting season and we've got a fiery coach who likes to rub people's noses in their own crap, and yet, I can't seem to summon the hate and fire I'm supposed to be able to summon. Here we are, us, H&R and Crimson Quarry, politely going along as if we don't despise one another. You'd expect this out of T-Mill at H&R, of course, as he's rarely one to tweak people, choosing instead to represent Purdue as Switzerland (don't ask me what Switzerland borders).

Us, on the other hand... well, we're jerks. You know this, of course, which is why you read this site. And we've taken our shots at Indiana before, but in recent years it has had a whole lot more to do with their embarrassing basketball program travails and, despite being eminently mockable, we've been sort of easy on their football program. Why? I don't know. Maybe we don't like seeing them fail as miserably as they've failed at times -- our joy in seeing others fail is more reserved for the wretched arrogance that emanates from South Bend. (Who, by the way, really doesn't have a rival to play during rivalry week. How sad.) Our hate tends to come out more for programs with poor leaders who refuse to focus on issues they should be focusing on (like, say, Michigan or, again, Notre Dame).

To me, the Bucket rivalry would be much more fun if both programs were "up," and thus the games meant more. We're at a point with IU where losing to them would be awful -- like losing to a MAC school. So if that's the most hateful thing we can say, so be it.

So what say you? Do you hate IU? Do you truly love seeing them scorched by 40-50 points?

I went off on an IU fan touting Ben Chappell as a great QB last week, something along the lines of:

Ben Chappell has to wear his football helmet every time he tries to think. Ben Chappell still wears huggies. Ben Chappell wears a garlic necklace because he thinks the Twilight movies are real. They have to re-introduce Ben Chappell to his receivers after every quarter so he knows who to throw to.

And maybe I should have added: Ben Chappell's so bad he makes Cleveland Browns QB's look like hall-of-famers.

Is that enough 'hate'?

So you're saying... yes?

I don't love seeing them steamrolled nearly as much as I do Notre Dame. I only truly hate IU three days a year: one football game and two men's basketball games. Other than that, I let them be, only making a few jabs here and there. Charlie and the cocktail weenies, however, have my full-time hatred.

Maybe it's a combination of IU being in the Big Ten and, of late, too pitiful to really feel like picking on. Although I did greatly enjoy your jabs at their AD earlier. Those were golden.

I HATE INDIANA UNIVERSITY. Like really, really, really HATE them. I don't hate their athletic programs as much as I used to because, as has been pointed out, they suck...at, like, everything. But I entirely loathe the way their students act like IU is superior in some way to Purdue.

This week's edition of the "Odyssey" (Purdue's greek newspaper) featured articles by IU students as well as Boilermaker students. Kids at IU act like they are in some way academically superior (they aren't), they have hotter chicks (they have more chicks, most of which tend to be absolute gargoyles), or that the five banners championship banners hanging in Assembly Hall mean something (when IU won their last national title I was -2 years old).

Do I really hate any one IU person? No, I don't (except that entire tailgate of dudes that tried to fight me at the last game in Bloomington when I was a freshman). But the Institution of Blooming High School? Yes, I hate them more than ND and OSU combined.

Okay, we're getting warmed up here... yeah, I think being away from the area for a while now has softened me on IU since they get zero play nationally. But yeah, it's coming back to me now... the superiority, acting like they're a more renowned academic institution, better-looking women (whatever!), and yeah, those musty old banners that mean NOTHING...

One of my favorite moments as a Purdue student was at the Bucket game in 2004. After SMOKING Ball State earlier in the year (59-7) and after the disappointment of "The Fumble" we were also routing IU. After the traditional "IU High School" chant, the student section banded together and started a "Ball State's better" chant(note: we also did a "Ball State High School" chant in September). I loved it. The next time the students would band together like that, we started the now infamous "First Down Bitch" in 2005.

I'll second and third what the Mosquito and the Cowboy have to say. It probably has to do with the upity bull-shit I have to deal with on a daily basis living in Indy. I hope we walk up and down the field on this joke of a football team.

CalTravelGuy said...

Ok... I'll just say what we are all thinking... You just CAN'T take a team seriously with and "I" or an "IU" on their helmet. It looks wrong... it feels wrong. It's like trying to take Duke or UNC serious in football. It just doesn't fit. Until IU has players in the NFL who are fantasy football picks, don't try and compare our programs. Purdue... BIG on Saturday.

I pity them. I've never disliked IU, even (or maybe especially) as a student at Purdue - there were more girls down south, so what's not to like?.

I've always respected their basketball program and its success, since both schools share an Indiana heritage and one cannot argue with their success at the NCAA tournament. I even respected Bob Knight, because I respect persons of principal, event in flaw and fault, since I'm no different. Their previous failure on a grand scale with their choice of basketball coach is sad.

The futility of their football program is confounding; doesn't the blind squirrel get a nut once in a while? These must be difficult things for their students, and I remember well what it was like back in 89 and 90 when there was little hope for our football team.

I've never encountered it, but in my view any arrogance borne from believe in the superiority of their education would be misplaced. I work with executives managing Fortune 250 companies, and I think I've encountered perhaps 2 IU grads. The Boilermakers I've chanced upon outnumber them by at least 5 to 1. If the education were superior I'd think that these numbers would be reversed. Granted my sample set is only my own, and probably skewed, but it's my experience. I've found universally that a Purdue education is highly regarded. Perhaps within the (very limited) state of Indiana there's some bias toward IU grads, but I've never seen it in NYC, San Francisco, DC, or any of the other places I've worked.

So it's probably apparent that I don't hate IU. I view them as a rival in basketball but little else.

I also want to see a serious ass-whooping of IU this weekend, temperance not withstanding. ;-)

I need to preface this post by saying I did go to Kelley for my MBA, however I have never felt any loyalty to anything other than Purdue. I feel like in my history 1997+ IU has been so awful that the football games are hardly relavant. I mean who gets excited about destroying Toledo? I do find it amusing we tend to take out all our frustrations on IU at the end of the season, but still. Their hopps team... I despise. Their fans simply aren't reasonable. But pigskin? No one is worse than ND. Rival or not, whatever, there is no other game on the schedule for me. I just wish they'd give Matty and the boys a chance to slap them in the face.

boilerbugle said...

It was fun to see the Boilermakers dominate the bucket game last year, but I gotta say, I wish this game was a close one every year. Not because the teams are both mediocre but because they're both Big Ten contenders. I look forward to the day when Purdue seals the Big Ten title with a win in the Bucket game.

Mosquito said it perfectly, but

Here's a short list of what I hate about the Loosiers:

1) Talk about how beautiful the IU campus is

2) Striped warmup pants

3) Talk about ancient championships like they happened yesterday

4) Vanity plates with the basketball trophies on them - "Look how good we used to be"

5) "eye-YOU! eye-YOU!"

6) Breaking Away

I'm pretty sure this is an unhealthy obsession, but I tune into every possible televised IU game just for the opportunity to watch them lose.

The Dude said...

As per Dozer's comments:

1. It is garbage, both campuses very nice, now circa 1997, yeah they had it then, but now, tie.

2. Very gay. Fact.

3. Very silly too, Michigan (Maize and Brew), ND football fans take note

4. Stupid

5. Who cares

6. I didn't know that existed till the BTN commercial!

But as far as the women go... Sorry guys they have us there. It's true. Think about it... IYU has most of the soft sciences and we have engineering and ag, good luck with that. But it's also my experience that Purdue gals have gotten better with age.

After this season, my opinion of the Michigan program and their fans has completely changed. I never knew they were such arrogant jackasses.

Purdue Matt said...

Yes, love seeing them scorched by 50 points. And not just by us, by anyone. The thing I root for second most passionately (behind Purdue winning) is for IU to lose. I was really into that EKU game earlier this year, they had em on the ropes! I guess living in Indy makes me hate IU more since I have to hear it and deal with it on a regular basis. ND hate is a very close 3rd.

Boilergal said...

I HATE IU!!!! Always have. Maybe it has something to do with growing up in Southern Indiana being surrounded by hillbillies with absolutely no connection with IU that worshipped Knight and Alford.

I will be at the game and also will stay over to hang out with the Hoosiers that have zero social skills. Anyone else notice that people that attended IU know absolutely no one outside their group of 10 or so friends. Everytime I am at IU with IU grads, I know multiple groups of people and they seem to know no one else- they might as well be on USC's campus. I guess Purdue people like to talk to randoms sitting next to them at the bars or on campus- I think its a sign of arrogance on IU's part. There definitely is an "IU attitude" that nearly every IU grad displays.

I absolutely HATE losing to IU. They are my most hated opposing team. Followed closely by ND. Then comes OSU, but I agree with Matt that UM is coming up quickly. What is with that Maize and Brew blog that whines constantly? It started for me after the Manny Harris elbow and has rapidly increased with the cry-babies on their blogs. They are equivalent to the trashy guy that wants to kick Terrelle Pryor's ass. Too bad UM and OSU fans hate each other so much, they seem cut from the same cloth.

I'm kinda torn between watching Purdue pound IU and the sense of elation I get watching Notre Dame get spanked on national TV because of their contract.

Can't hate because my brother graduated from there, but he's also a White Sox fan...I digress....

Do I hate IU? How best should I answer this question? Right now I am sitting at work wearing my POTFH shirt and tomorrow I will be wearing my IU sucks shirt.

Maybe it has something to do with that the small town I grew up in was so pro IU with only a small group of Purdue families. I hate the fact that IU acts like we are their little brother. I hate the arrogance of their fans when it comes to their tradition. I hate the walk, I hate the rock, I hate Mellencamp, I hate that their stupid first down cheer, I hate the fact that their band plays the stupid stupid song from that Chips Ahoy commercial as their big number.

What are the two things I hate most about IU? One the stupid candy striped pants! Just the sight of them makes me violently angry. The second is Bobby Knight. I hate that IU fans apologize for his behavior and being such a jerk. Choking players and throwing chairs is not a good example for the youth like they make him sound.

Rant over. Long story short IU SUCKS!!!

I went to the Grace at IU bball game a couple weeks ago to watch my brother play (he plays for Grace) and instead of wearing red and white (the color of Grace as well) to support the Lancers, I just wore a gold Purdue shirt. I actually saw 3 other people with Purdue shirts there!

I own 2 red shirts; one is my high school golf shirt (I know, I never throw clothes away) and the other is a church softball shirt. I only wear that if I have to.

When I married my wife I found out she owned an IU soccer camp shirt that she sometimes wore to bed. She no longer owns that shirt.

I have a shirt that says, “You’re Ugly” on the front and “and your mother dresses you in red and white!” on the back. I enjoy wearing the shirt around IU fans.

Last years drubbing in the bucket game gave me nothing but warm fuzzies all over. It ALMOST made me forget the fact that we didn’t make a bowl game.

About the only disappointing thing I can think of about last years IU basketball season was the fact that we didn’t beat them by over 30 points! It was the worst feeling I’d ever had after attending a Purdue win over IU in basketball.

A great weekend for me would include a Purdue and Colts win and an IU and Notre Dame loss!

I smile every football and/or basketball game when the student section adds "IU Sucks!" to the Hey song played by the band no matter who we are playing!

Do I hate IU?
Does a Baptist church have a bus?

The thing is when Purdue beats IU in football nobody really cares. IU fans take off their Notre Dame jerseys for a day a cheer on the team. When Purdue wins its "we don't care about football" or "your supposed to beat us anyway" But when IU does beat Purdue its like they won the world championship tell us how much we suck and then put their Notre Dame jerseys back on. So really Purdue has to win every year just to keep face.

Growing up in South Bend, I have to say that my deepest hatred is for Domers. IU is a damn close second. Would I like it if IU was better? Yes, in fact I would. I want IU to come into every Bucket game needing only that win to make a bowl, just to watch the pain of their players and students as the Boilers blow them out yet again.

I'll put it this way. After Taylor Stubblefield caught the touchdown in South Bend, I personally retired his Purdue jersey. I adamantly refuse to wear #21 until someone else in that number embarrasses ND like he did. I don't have anything like that for IU. Maybe JJ will block a shot into Crean's forehead at Assembly Hall or something, but until then my great rivalry memories are all ND. IU is just an annoying little brother. We are expected to win, and we do. Ho hum, see you next year hilljacks. Their students, fans, and Terry Hutchens talk a big game, but who cares when those same people don't show up for them. I still hate IU, don't get me wrong, but I don't celebrate their losses with the same joy that I do ND's.

POTFH

The Mosquito's comment re: "except that entire tailgate of dudes that tried to fight me at the last game in Bloomington when I was a freshman" reminded me of my last bucket game at Mausoleum Sinkhole in B-hole.

We missed kick-off (because those amateurs don't know how to handle a crowd of over 20,000 people), IU scores on the opening drive and as we are heading through a parking lot near the Sinkhole, someone from a group of IU tailgaters yells to me (decked out in Boiler gear) "Hey, it's 7-0, IU!"

I politely turned to him, and in full stride I asked "Can you say 'fifty-something to seven'?"

All he could think of as a retort was "Go home!" to which I replied "Yeah, right... we have a bucket full of 'Go home'!"

We all know what the greatest University is in the State of Indiana. They know it too-thats why they always have to act like they are so much better than Purdue. Yes-scorch by 60+ points is awesome. Last years a$$ whooping made the miserable season that much less hard to take, and gave something positive to build upon going into this year. I hate IU. Beat them BAD. I hope Ralph and Jason run for 300+ yards and we just massacre them.

The Mosquito said...

Do IU people know what POTFH means? I only ask because my license plate is literally POTFH (sorry if you're from Ohio and have been trying to get that plate). I don't want to park my car down there and get it keyed or anything.

Scruffy_P said...

Good, I was worried that I was the only one who felt violently angry every time I saw red and white candy-striped pants.

John: It shouldn't be hard for JJ to hit Crean's forehead with a block... that sucker is HUGE! That is, if Crean doesn't give himself a heart-attack pacing the sidelines like Speedy Gonzales on trucker pep pills.

John said...

His pacing last year was a feature in Paint Crew jeering. Tom Crean, never change, you are an opposing student section's dream.

Chad said...

Speaking of big foreheaded Crean, did anyone catch the subway commercial with Painter and Crean? Or has that been out for a while and I just haven't seen it...

Scruffy_P said...

Don't worry Chad, I'm sure we wont see that ONCE during the bucket game...

That's awesome you have a plate that says that. Ya I think some IU fans know what it means since they have POTB on their chat boards

I'm a current Purdue student and my great great uncle was Branch McCracken (coached IU to their first 2 NCAA championships) so growing up I wore red and white and went to IU games and was an IU fan. Now as a current Purdue student I just want to say THANK YOU PURDUE for showing me the right way. I love Purdue and am blessed and grateful to be a senior with good job prospects. The hilarious part my cousin my age that went to IU just failed out, I currently hold a 3.0. BOILER UP!!

By the way all you guys are geniuses in my book, and I'm a big fan of your work.

But although I don't know if I hate IU I do hate my cousin that failed out HAHA, I do really dislike them, but I do know I HATE Notre Dame.
