Six of their top ten ranked schools. Purdue is ranked #6 according to SI. Do you want to guess which school was among the four top-tens that did not get a regional cover? I bet you don't need many guesses.
More cover-worthy were Kansas (1), MSU (2), Villanova (3), Kentucky (5), Washington (9) and UConn (10).
You know what a hotbed for basketball the state of Washington is. Oh, and do you know who beat the Huskies in the tourney last year? I can't remember.
All that said, I'm not really complaining. I just find it entertaining that Purdue gets short-changed all the time from the media. As I've said before, I'm fine with them flying under the radar for as long as possible. If they keep winning games, they'll be impossible to ignore, but for now, it's fine if SI wants to focus on those other schools.
Strangely, I didn't see Mike Brey's nationally-recognized Irish featured on a regional cover, nor did I see any IU covers. IU was really good thirty years ago, too. Did you know that?

You are on Fire today, sir
What about Penn State?! Aren't they the defending national champs?
I believe in the SI Cover jinx. Glad Purdue is not on it.
In defense of SI, they're going to pick MSU and Kentucky over Purdue any day and if they're doing regional covers then they can't have three teams from the midwest (four if you include Kansas).
Plus the less attention Purdue gets, the better. The team has to stay hungry.
Im very disappointed in BS, not one mention of the volleyball team's win on senior night over a receiving votes Ohio St. team or that on friday they took a set from #1 ranked Penn St. losing only their 5th set all year. Much less Carrie Gurnell passing the 1000 kill mark. Come'on guys.
Matt, we tend not to talk about things we know little. I can speak for myself here- I know nothing about volleyball. We did post some pictures on FB about the volleyball team because they were easy on the eyes. That, we could confidently report.
That's how you're gonna beat 'em, Boilers. They keep underestimating you...*
Purdue Matt - Leave poor PSU alone. They won the tournament to which they were invited. Isn't that better than laying an egg an proving to everyone you didn't belong in the dance?
*Gratuitous Pulp Fiction reference
Since I'm in the Pac NW, and Washington is the only team in the region in their Top 10, it seems to make sense the Huskies are featured on the cover here.
Purdue just happens to be third among Midwest teams in their list. No great shame.
Still, let's not forget the SI cover curse. It may not be a good thing to be on the cover right now. What I want is to see them on the cover come April 2010.
I'd just like to see them on the television before April.
J - they will be on TV as soon as they play MSU...
Well, Michigan State did get to the finals last season, so yeah, they're going to get more press than Purdue even if seasons before that don't carry much weight (and of course they do).
Having said that, I think a throwback cover recalling Purdue's 1980 team (beaten by Cheating Larry Brown's UCLA team) and the return of the Final Four to Indy would have been nice, but it is SI. It won't be long before someone is fisking an article from one of their writers.
I appreciate the "regional" covers, but hell, Kentucky and not UNC? Maybe Calipari bought that too.
zlionsfan,
Why would it be UNC? They're rebuilding this year, even though they'll still be pretty good. UK is arguably the biggest story of the off-season and has the most buzz, not to mention a rabid fanbase.
Because they're also a preseason top-10 team and are probably a better regional representative than Kentucky. SEC, right, but no covers for the ACC? I think Jay Bilas just pooped himself.
Then again, I support anything that makes Jay Bilas poop himself.
I think we can agree on that.
No matter how anyone feels about Cal, you can't deny the buzz that he brought to UK, so it was probably easy for them to go that route.
UNC has been force-fed down our throats for the last 3-4 "Hansbrough" years, so maybe they thought that they'd give it a rest for a year. (And yes, I had to google to see how to spell his name).
Well, it was nice tonight to see my Boilers in a battle of two top-10 teams, being that I live out here on the West Coast. Not sure why Fox Sports West would carry Tennessee & Purdue (I was probably the only one tuned in), but it was nice.
