Ignore the lack of significant TV coverage.
Ignore the crappy production value of the telecasts.
Ignore the horribly-cheesy local TV commercials aimed at would-be tourists from the Mainland.
Ignore the sometimes-hot, sometimes-meh sideline reporter who's trying her damndest to be Erin Andrews.
Ignore the guy presenting the Championship trophy and reading the notecard on the back of the trophy.
Ignore that same guy's 13 year old daughter on the court for the presentation for no apparent reason.
And finally, ignore what is surely the worst-looking Championship trophy to ever be crafted.

Let's make no mistake, Tennessee is a talented team...and Bruce Pearl has had a lot of success as a college basketball coach. Sure, I still don't respect the SEC too much, but I'm not discounting Purdue's opponent. The Vols are comprised of a handful of former five-star recruits, another handful of 4-star recruits and a few role players for good measure. This team had averaged 92 pts/game over their first four and seemed deserving of their top-10 ranking heading into the game versus our Boilers.
But coming in, I thought their lack of discipline and poor decision-making would end up giving the Boilers the win. In the end, it did, as Chism, UT's 10th-year starter took an ill-advised 20 footer when all the Vols needed was a two-pointer to win. Hummel rotated, attempted to get a hand in his face and the shot was rebounded by Barlow as the clock hit 0:00...And the good guys won, 72-73.
So how'd they do it? It wasn't really how I thought it would happen- Purdue shot the three ball very-poorly...yet again, with Hummel leading the chorus of bricks by shooting 1 of 6. I'll give credit where it's due- Tennessee had a lot to do with that as their players are long and contest a ton of shots.
On top of poor three-point shooting, Purdue shot their free throws poorly as well only making 73%...and once-again, the typically ice-water veined Hummel missed an important one down the stretch. The emerging Freshman Kelsey Barlow did a ton correctly on Monday night...but shooting standing 15-footers wasn't one of those things. He and Hummel could have put the game away from the line, but didn't.
Both of Purdue's big men who played fouled out...and three other Purdue players had 3 fouls with a lot of basketball yet to be played.
It was a sloppy, and kind-of-ugly, but hard-fought game. According to Clisby, the two teams began jawing at eachother at the hotel in the morning...and nearly came to blows a few times in the game. Even Painter and Pearl were yelling at eachother in the closing minutes of the game. And while I love to see fire from players and coaches, I really would have liked to have seen Purdue keep their collective heads cooler.
Bruce Pearl is a buffoon...a loud-mouthed, profusely-sweating jack who has become a caricature of himself. But, before this tournament, I had no idea his Dad is Telly Savalas...thanks to FCS for focusing in on Pearl's Dad over, and over, and over.
It seems to me, the worst thing you can do when confronted with a group of malcontents is let them know they're affecting you. Purdue didn't rise above their garbage and instead became part of it...so the game was closer than it should have been, in my opinion. No matter, the better team won and stayed unbeaten.
If one play sums up Purdue's effort, it's this one:
It wasn't at all pretty, but it was effective...and it was gritty. This uber-intense game, in spite of

I know a few people who have visited the board in the last week or so dismissed the importance and relevance of this tourney...but remember, the 2008 champ was none-other than the UConn Huskies.
Hopefully Purdue's victory this evening was a foreshadowing of a big-time victory leading to a final four...What we know it was is the first of many reached goals for Matty's club in '09/'10.
Smooge rightfully-received the tourney's MVP award. Sure, according to much of the media, Moore is forgotten, but not to his teammates. Many of them called 'Twaun the best player on the team coming into the season, and he showed why, especially versus UT. In particular, in the last five minutes, he assessed a mismatch as Chism switched onto him on defense...Smooge crossed over and pulled up just outside of the paint with a big-time shot that he drained. He ended with 22 points and shot 50%. Moore averaged 18 points/gm for the tournament.
I liked a lot of what we saw the last three games...from Ryne Smith asserting himself, to Kelsey Barlow's increased role...this was a good trip for our Boilers. But, our Boilers will get much, much better as they begin to work toward their second, and slightly-more important Championship of the '09/'10 season.

Great post...and nice blog you have here. Its weird how purdue doesn't seem to have any big message boards or blogs outside of GBI and the Old Gold Free Press Board.
Huge win for the Boilers, our best regular season win in a long long time.
Great win. Need to shoot better and stay out of foul trouble. I thought most of JJ's fouls were crap. He got mauled under the hoop several times and there was no call. What were Pearl and Painter yelling at each other about? The production and presentation of this tournament was very unimpressive. It doesn't make me want to visit the virgin islands.
"Its weird how purdue doesn't seem to have any big message boards or blogs outside of GBI and the Old Gold Free Press Board."
Wierd? How? GBI is where all the true fans are. There's really no reason for any other message board or online community when GBI does such a great job.
Hold on, let me straighten my 3x5 card so I can read my comment:
Awesome game....proud of the Boilers.....Barlow is growing up quick and really seems to have Painters trust.....but really, how about those Tennessee players that shut down Jujuan Johnson?..you know, those three guys dressed in black and white stripes...they were AWESOME!
I think it is a big win and hopefully will help the younger boilers gain valuable experience in pressure situations. Can only help once conference play starts. UT is a pretty good team, very athletic and a good matchup for the boilers. I kept thinking Lew Jack would have helped in the early going when the offense was struggling...hopefully that problem won't arise too often. It seemed to me the officials were letting them play early on...but then tried to stop everything...and then let things go again at the end. Unfortunately JJ got caught being physical at the wrong times. I am impressed that Keaton Grant didn't totally lose his cool when he got called for the fouldwhen the guy tripped over his own feet!! Purdue missed 7 free throws, Barlow missed 3 of those himself and bricked two at the end. I think they need to work on his pressure situation free throws!!
Come on man, lay off the trophy! Don't you know that we are in a recession!
And so the Chris Kramer legend grows...
Bruce was yelling at Matty because he thought 1. Robbie didn't have control so he couldn't call a time out and 2 he thought he was out of the coaching area. Whatever Bruce. I thought Matty might punch him. It was the first time I've seen the squad this year, so that said... Barlow will be decent, and hate to harp on it, especially because I didn't see the St. Joe game, but Ryne Smith is NOT a Big 10 player. Sorry. Barlow can be. Byrd looks lost at times. I might be able to fake him out. Pretty pissed at the refs, UT traveled almost every time they made a break for the hoop never called it. Pretty sure JJ's blocking foul was a charge, no way to be certain with 1 camera in the building, regardless he looks like a monster, flying out of the gym, love it. I'm calling BTPOTY. Oh and Smooge was fantastic. More and more he reminds me of Chris Douglas-Roberts, but better defensively. CDR's playing well for the Nets, so why not Smooge? Excellent game, good to play someone whose style we won't see again till maybe tourney time, better yet take home the trophy and the W. PARADISE JAMPIONS!!!
Dude- I think you're going to be giving Smith an apology later this season. If you would have seen the St. Joe's game, you'd know what I'm saying.
He's like Matt Waddell with a touch of Brian Cardinal's attitude.
I agree that Ryne Smith was very unimpressive. He looked out of place on many occaisons. He was trying to hard to make a play such as when he fouled UT on that missed 3. He should just play within himself and shoot when he's open.
Great win for Purdue. The new guys got a lot of experience, but the chemistry with them still has room to grow. Barlow is growing in leaps and bounds and by Big Ten time should be a good replacement for LewJack.
Dowd I hope you're right. I just don't see it. Doesn't he just look like a player that'd be backing up at a school like Butler? Little dude, pretty slow, can chuck. He looks like a baby. Kelsey Barlow looks like a basketball player, not a high school kid.
Sadly that was a run of the mill UT game. They really are the most over confident team and fans. You guys got exactly what Bruce pearl is. I am giving all ut fans here in Knoxville crap. Purdue gave me alot of braging rights here.
The Dude -- Butler is a chic pick for the Final Four, man. So I'm not sure what you're saying is a knock on Smith. Heh.
Re: UT -- what was with all the incredulous looks and blank stares after the game? Like Purdue had stolen it or something? Classy.
Mid Majors that compete have a nice front line then the subs and the end of their benchs are dudes that look like Ryne. All I'm saying is he's too small, slow and limited to be a reliable, meaningful back up on a Top 10 team. You see Tennesee's dudes coming off the bench? Little more athletic than Ryne, I'd say. Barlow has way more potential.
Kramer's play was awesome. When I saw it live, at first I thought he was just sliding ... swimming. awesome.
Chism is a monster. It was good to see Purdue can beat a team like that, especially with our bigs fouling out and their bigs not. That's about the only type of team I'd really worry about; anyone else we should match up with really well. (I don't get the three-point shot at the end either, especially not with Tennessee's size advantage after JJ and Bade fouled out.
The officiating was weird, but it did get our bench guys a lot of PT against tough competition. That's great this early in the season. Usually they end up playing against guys like me, and I look like 20 years ago I wouldn't even have been on the end of the aforementioned mid-major bench.
Agree that it was good to see Purdue players keeping their cool and Painter holding his own. (It was also good to see players defusing tension the one time it looked like it might get ugly. We don't need that shit.) It looks like we have 25 games left with Big Ten officials, so there will be at least 25 games where the refs suck, so they need to practice dealing with calls they don't understand. (When the weak announcers say right away that there was no foul, well, those refs need some help.)
Sagarin has us at #3 now. The computers like us, the polls like us, here's hoping the team keeps rolling.
Have I mentioned before that I love Chris Kramer??? What a beast! Better take advantage of his presence this season, he's really a spark plug. Great win. This is the type of game we have lost in the past, glad to see we may be jumping over the hurdles we never could in the past. This could be a very special season. Barlow really has impressed me... I guess my expectations of him were pretty low. Also, I promise not to yell about Wohlford being put in. The guy has given quality contributions during the minutes he's played. Well done!!
Barlow is lucky those missed free throws did not cost us. Purdue grinded it out and in the end came out with the win. But free throws gentlemen...you need to do better. Purdue will have plenty more games like this one and it always comes down to free throws.
That trophy looked like a gold record. We must have a hit single.
csd -- I thought the same thing... kind of cross between a hit record and a Grammy award.
The trophy is a "steel pan, used to make traditional, rhythmic music in the Caribbean islands", don'cha know?
When I heard that at the presentation of the trophy to our captains, I said to myself "There's our new traveling trophy for the PU-IU men's b-ball series"
...seeing how WE BEAT THEM LIKE A STEEL PAN and it creates TRADITIONAL, RHYTHMIC WAILING AND SOBBING in Marion and Monroe counties, I think it would be the PERFECT traveling trophy for that series.
Rushthecourt.net has Purdue ranked 4th in the Big Ten.

Andrew - I think that's based on their current record. Take another look...
Talking about the commentators at the Jam. They stated that Kramer may become a 5th year senior and play football for Purdue. I've searched the Interwebs and couldn't find anything on this. Could this even be remotely true? A Greg Paulus situation?
This article helps explain some of the crappy TV coverage for this tournament (although not the lack coverage by the BT Network for our exhibition games).

ESPN has taken over the early season tournaments, and ours wasn't an ESPN event.
Michael R -- that actually is a rumor floating around, that once his hoops eligibility is up, he might want to play football. He was a QB in HS, I think.... I can't imagine there's much to it, but we've heard that rumor before, too.
Hey, I'd like his toughness in the secondary.
