Love how that photo makes Charlie look like a Jersey goombah. As contrite (OK, marginally less insufferably arrogant) as Weis has been these last 2 seasons, I can't feel too sorry for a guy who walked away from a lousy performance -- 7 games above .500 for his coaching career makes him only 3 wins better than Gerry Faust-- a multimillionaire who doesn't need to work another day in his life.
Rivals offered an interesting scenario-- if Clausen, Tate, and all of the other talented juniors marched into the AD's office with the ultimatum that they would all come back for their senior season if Weis stayed (straight out of "Hoosiers") things -may- have been different. Far as I can tell, that never happened, and it apparently never crossed these player's minds-- in all fairness, they have their own health and careers to look after.
As has been stated by another commenter, my main concern is that UND finally hires the right guy for the position. Weis was easy to hate, because his arrogance went hand-in-hand with Domers' own views of UND, and it helped to gloss over the shortcomings of this coach-- so much so that Weis had his defenders up until 3 games ago. But boorish behavior is tolerated only when winning-- something this coach hasn't done with any regularity, and he burned up his goodwill with the high-roller subway alums a long time ago. So long Charlie-- maybe your widely-reported friendship with Gerry Faust can land you a job at University of Akron-- as a former Akron HC and faculty admin, Faust probably still has some stroke there.

I'll miss him. He was just so easy to make fun of. I'd hate to see a really competent coach in South Bend.
The next ND coach is going to have some awfully big size 55 waist khaki pants to fill.
Don't forget that ND got rid of Lou Holtz so that he wouldn't break Knute Rockne's record.
I'm sure Rockne is happy.
