The Boilers came out hot, busting out to that 9-1 lead, while Alabama went 0-4 from the floor. And then the Purdue shooters went their customary, first-half icy cold. Good when you're talking a tall beer. Bad when you're talking a tall Boilermaker (named Rob Hummel).
Let's be honest here -- neither team was quite what they appeared to be in the first half. Alabama is good, but not that good. They played suffocating defense (more on that in a minute) and absolutely shot the lights out. I don't have the numbers in front of me for the first half, but 'bama was hot and was not wasting shots. They didn't need to rebound all that well because they were hitting things and causing turnovers. They were making the most of their chances.
Purdue, on the other hand, is not as bad as they looked -- I hope. They simply could not handle Alabama's pressure defense and full-court press. I can't count the number of times the Boilermakers made errant passes, lazy passes, dumb passes.... passes that lacked thought or vision. The kinds of passes boilerdowd used to make at Mrs. Boilerdowd during their courtship. You know what I'm saying -- sloppy.
The theory on playing a trapping press defense like that is to not dribble the ball, but to pass it immediately to keep from getting trapped. Purdue clearly planned for this, but it was almost to a fault. There were many times I found myself yelling at the TV for Purdue to dribble upcourt, dammit! When there's an opening and you can get 10-12 feet upcourt or, importantly, across the timeline, you do so. Yet Purdue continually looked to pass even when they probably didn't need to, leading to near-10-second violations on multiple occasions. This, as boilerdowd pointed out to me, is a great example of where Lewis Jackson's quickness and ballhandling skills would have been a invaluable asset. If you're an athletic team that's got Purdue on the schedule, you'd be smart to work on your trapping press defense. Yes, I know Tennessee did it, too, but I think we can all agree the Boilermakers looked a lot better against the Vols.
I don't know what went on at halftime, but it looked like the same two teams came out for the second half. Never a good sign. I was hoping to see, well, what we're used to seeing from Purdue -- a takeover. But at first it didn't come. Alabama stretched that nine point lead to sixteen and, I'll admit, I thought that was it for tonight.
And then the Boilermakers went on a 43-19 run to end the game. Ho-lee-sheet.
That was insane lockdown defense. Suddenly, the Boilers were intercepting passes and grabbing every rebound and pushing up the floor. And they didn't do it by getting hot and raining threes -- they did it in their methodical manner. Grind down the other team, continue to do the things you do well. That is, play strong defense....and the rest will come. And did it ever.
JJ, who had three fouls before ten minutes had elapsed in the first half, became a presence again in the second half and while he only wound up with ten points, his impact was noticeable. I had a great feeling as they closed the gap, seeing JJ, CK, Smooge and Ostrich playing their game. When we have our big guns out there, I think this team can hang with just about anybody. And yes, being the #5 team in the nation, they should be able to. But you know as well as I do that sometimes those rankings are only on paper. Or at least you should know that -- Jimmy Dykes mentioned it about 400,000 times during the broadcast.
As JJ was re-establishing himself, Hummel was putting together a great night, shooting well, rebounding, playing great defense himself. And, of course, Chris Kramer was a machine. That second half felt like the Rob and Chris show.
We've talked a lot about building blocks and taking steps and working towards a special season. This game is yet another example. Good teams do what Purdue did tonight. Lesser teams do not crawl out of a 16 point second half deficit on the road. Lesser teams do not withstand a 23-2 run by the other team. Seriously, look at that -- Alabama had a 23-2 run in the first half. They had a pretty intense student section, a pretty loud arena and a pretty focused team that fully believed they could and would win. And yet Purdue wore them down and made them cry uncle.
Are you starting to believe? Choo-choo.
Miscellaneous Thoughts
- "The SEC on ESPN"? Since when? I thought ESPN showed college basketball...period. Why the affiliation?
- I don't need to hear from Jimmy Dykes any more about how Purdue hadn't proved themselves yet because they hadn't played on the road. Beating Tennessee -- a top 10 team -- in the Virgin Islands doesn't count because it was a neutral court. Okay.
- Dykes also called Purdue a "quiet #5."
- He also compared Rob Hummel to Kyle Singler, which, while, um, I guess (they're both white, after all!), I don't see what Singler has to do with this game.
- To Dykes' credit, he also referred to Kramer as "the best perimeter defender in the college game" a number of times.
- Enough about the Heisman. Nobody cares. If we cared, we'd be watching the Heisman coverage on the primary EsPN channel. I'm sure they're still talking about it. It had zero to do with this game. Dykes and Blackburn must have mentioned it at least a dozen times, right?
- DJ Byrd showed signs of progress but still made errors. He hit both his three-point attempts and was fouled on a third -- which was when Purdue had finally tied the game. And then he bricked the first to attempts. He also had a couple of costly turnovers when the game was still in doubt. Those can be rally-killers and while I'm still happy he's getting this kind of playing time, he needs to begin showing improvement. I think he took some steps tonight, but they weren't without some bumps.
- Curtis Shaw, one of the officials for the game, got into it with the Alabama student section and had a few of them ejected. I'm not sure he's allowed to do this, but even if he is, he really shouldn't be paying attention to the students at all. What were they doing? Yelling at him? Uhhh, so what? This is college basketball. What did you think you were officiating, Curtis? Thumbs down on this. The students did not appear to be leaving their (pretty cool) risers right near the court.
- More nuggets from Jimmy Dykes: "Purdue has mentally closed the gap to ten points."
- And another: "Chris Kramer is a one-man linebacker." (I'd be frightened of a two-man linebacker.)

The commentating was absolutely horrid tonight. It almost makes me long for Steve Lavin...
The SEC on ESPN thing bugged me, too. Not sure what qualified this game to be more SEC than Big 10. But the whole broadcast was pretty crappy anyways, so whatever. By the way, the Tar Heels are playing the Dallas Cowboys next week. And I never got to find out what the hell the "Green Game" was, despite multiple promises.
Anyways, real good stuff from Robbie and Kramer. This win will be very valuable when we hit the road in our conference schedule.
Yeah the fact they were all about us not being as good as our ranking until around the 8 minute mark was ridiculous. It seemed like they were only for 'Bama. They only started praising us when they realized we were making a legit comeback. I never thought I'd say that I missed the BTN game coverage but tonight I really did! (although this season the BTN has been a lot better with announcing compared to last year.
Great win for our Boilers on the road. First half we looked lost out there, credit Alabama's coach the press really took us out of what we wanted to do. Locked down on D in the second half and our offense followed.
As any Purdue fan knows, you have to ignore anything ESPN has to say about Purdue. Both of those announcers were terrible.
Ryan: I too can't wait to watch UNC play the Cowboys next week.
-It appears the only way an SEC audience can follow a basketball game is to put everything in football terms.
-The SEC is not faster than Chris Kramer.
-This will happen again and again and again if/when JJJ gets in foul trouble.
-Keaton Grant.... 0 pts. I'm officially worried.
-We all know the Big Ten is one of the most talented leagues, but these non-conference losses are not helping. Not any one loss in particular, just we should win some of these.
-Digger Phelps. Light in the loafers?
-Was anyone else surprised reading that we held them without a FG for 8:45? ESPN dropped the ball on that stat like everything else about that broadcast.
-I'm going to give the ref the benefit of the doubt with the ejections. I suspect whatever was said or done was not directed at the refs, but at the players.
-Proud to see so many Boilers in the stands.
I think it was "The SEC on ESPN" because, if I'm not mistaken, these were announcers from the newly created SEC Network, which was formed by a partnership between ESPN's regional tv divison the SEC. I almost muted the tv at one point during the broadcast.
Although I was pissed for the first 3/4 of the game, it's great to see our team battle back and earn the victory. This sends a message to the rest of our opponents that you can't count us out. This game will be valuable experience when we're in the middle of a tough Big 10 season.
The moment in the game that really made me happy about how our team is structured was after Byrd bricked his first two of three free throws and on camera you could see that he was a bit freaked. As the camera panned away, you could see Hummel walking over to him, hands out, telling him to relax. Byrd then drained the last free throw to give us the lead. That leadership is so important.
You are correct, this was the SEC Network doing a game on ESPN (http://www.secsports.com/news/default.aspx?ArticleId=12966)
I'll take the Cowboys by six. Any takers?
Yea, I'll have to agree that game had some pretty poor announcing even by ESPN standards. I already hate all the attention that the Heisman Trophy gets now I have to listen to it while I watch my basketball team, god damn it. If that wasn't enough, they had to constantly talk about the Alabama graduation all game.
I'm curious why the ref kicked out the fans. I've never heard of anything like that before. That's securities job to handle the fans if they are crossing the line not the refs.
I agree with Chris, Keaton Grant had been disappointing so far this year. Four fouls and zero points in 16 minutes, come on. He doesn't really bring anything to the floor, not a great scorer anymore, average defensive player, and okay ball handler at times.
I've always wanted Kramer to step up his scoring more, and these last couple games he has been tearing it up.
Oh and Digger. Wow, all it makes sense now.
Of course I missed JJ's two first fouls when the other game was wrapping up. But what about #3 & 4? I didn't see anything that warranted a foul call. I know he has to stay out of foul trouble, but he has to know what he is doing to avoid it. On #4 he was to the side and maybe a little in front of the Alabama forward going for the rebound, and there was really no contact. Where was the foul? Did the SEC network direct the refs to get him in foul trouble quick, (a la Tim Donaghy).....really strange. Also, could somebody have told those jerk-knob announcers that this wasn't Ohio St vs SEC in football? I got so tired of hearing them talk about "SEC speed" and how the Big Ten just couldn't keep up?
On Johnson's #4 foul I thought it was a clear over the back on Alabama. JJ did too based on his reaction to the whistle.
Painter was pretty hot with the officials at one point in the 2nd half, which was a pretty good indication of bad they were, as it takes a lot to get him into Keady mode.
Speaking of Keady, it was great to see him there in the stands.
I only saw the 2nd half of the game, but they mentioned the Heisman at least a dozen times in the 2nd half alone. Given that it was hotter hews in the first half, I have to guess they mentioned even more often earlier.
I can understand all the excitement about some kids graduating, it is Alabama after all.
Great win.
I got tired of the announcers as well. Also, when Purdue is behind on the road I like to switch over to Cliz. He calls it like he sees it and will let you know when Purdue is getting screwed.
Was at the game and it was great to be aroud so many Boilers in Tuscaloosa. I will be honest I was afraid we were going to lose the game but the team is special this year and they made the long trip down there worth it. On a side note the Alabama fans were great hosts but it probably didn't hurt they got the Heisman that night too.
Two different thoughts:
-First, as a licensed official, I can tell you that officials can throw out anyone in the gym for really any reason they choose. Period. I know as a fan I love to let the refs know just exactly what I think of their calls but if you think that officials don't here anything you're saying, you're wrong. Probably a lot more so than players. Most of it you can and should ignore, but if a fan is consistently able to distract you whether it be with words or by getting to close to the court, and it keeps you from putting 100% of you mind on the game, then they've got to go. Oh and don't even get me started on how bad those refs were at calling the game; I've never seen so many calls from out of position (except from Jim Burr) or not counting for 5 seconds.
-Second, Keaton Grant needs bench time. Frankly I think DJ can do everything Grant can, maybe not quite as well, but at least he can score. Our team can't afford to have two relatively unproductive players out their when running motion (in Grant and Kramer, not that I have anything wrong with KC).
On JJ's 4th foul, one of the commentators was rambling on and on and didn't even mention the possibly huge and game changing(fortunately it wasn't) 4th foul on our big man. I have to agree that while I'm usually not too much of a stickler for good commentating, this has to be one of the worst games I've heard in a while.
On another note, what an amazing win!
Best free throw shooting game of the year by the Boilers. I think that made the difference down the stretch. If they shot 70% from the line than it would have been a squeeker.
Do you all realize how much we will miss Kramer next year? Can we somehow find a way to keep him playing for another year?
Actually, not the best free throw shooting game of the year. That would be our 19-20 (95%) outing vs. CMU. But you can never complain about 81%.
This team has a shot at being the best free throw shooting team in Purdue history....and one of the best in the nation this year.
We started the season 32 for 51 (62.7%) in our first two games. In the seven games since, we're 131 for 163 (80.4%). That's impressive.
All five starters are shooting over 72% and Hummel is at 91% now. Even Kramer is up to 81%
All the comments from the announcers about road wins should be taken with a warehouse full of salt ... after all, they mentioned Kentucky's win over IU as a significant road win for a top-25 team. You know, because IU is in a power conference and all that. Never mind that UK has what seems to be another well-paid team and IU is at the rapidly-growing bottom of the Big Ten (although honestly I think Michigan will challenge them for that spot this season).
It's okay, it was still a huge win for Purdue, and maybe SEC fans are right about their officials. During football season, I wasn't convinced that SEC refs are worse than Big Ten refs ... I may be changing my mind now.
I agree with zlionsfan regarding "quality" road wins. Beating IU in Bloomington hardly qualifies this year. Even worse, Kansas's win over UCLA. Sagarin has the Bruins ranked at 241 today.
So, for top 10 teams, this Purdue road win over Alabama surely is the most impressive. By far. Not even close.
With Villanova losing today, and given how close the vote was between Kentucky and Purdue last week, there's a good chance Purdue rises to 3rd in both polls. Kentucky did beat UConn last week in a close one on a neutral court, and Purdue has been flying under the radar in comparison, so I wouldn't be surprised if Purdue ends up ranked 4th. Just trying to find any national commentary on the win over Bama outside of Boiler nation seems to be impossible. Par for the course.
I've come to grips that Purdue will not be respected as a legitimate Final Four contender by the national media (ESPN) no matter how many games we win. After our first loss they'll jump on the opportunity to say "see I told you they shouldn't have been a top five team." I don't care about our ranking, but I do demand respect.
I don't see how we could possibly rise to 3rd, with Kentucky beating UCONN this week. Beyond that, I wouldn't be surprised if Syracuse passed us in the ESPN/USA Today with their win over Florida. Syracuse is just another ESPN love child, while hardly anybody has noticed us.
The next three games should be relatively easy wins for the Boilers (Ball State, SIU-Edwardsville and Iowa). IF we take down WVa on Jan 1 and go to 13-0, a school record by the way, maybe then we get the respect we will so justly deserve after that power comeback vs Bama..
WVU has a trio of tough games coming up (Ole Miss, @Seton Hall, Marquette), but I hope they get through them undefeated. It would be awesome to see a 12-0 team match up with an 11-0 team, and probably both in the top 4 or so if that did happen.
First of all I really don't have a problem with Jimmy Dykes. i think he is one of the better lesser known commentators on ESPN (not saying much I know). But in previous games commentated by him, he does a good job of explaining the game I think. That being said it doesn't surprise me how much "disrespect" we're getting. Part of me is somewhat glad that they keep on discarding us to a point. Obviously we're a program that hasn't succeeded on the national scene in a while and we have that stigma of winning with "non-athletic" guys (regardless of race). Why do you think ESPN is so quick to jump on all these other teams before us because the other teams have recently had success before us. We haven't made it to the Final Four since 1980 (as we all know). ESPN hyped us up last year and we weren't ready to be bigtime along with dealing with injuries. Now this year the ranking is there but not the hype but more like skepticism. Whatever the only thing to shut these clowns up is to win four to six straight games starting in Mid March. It is what it is...the thing about it is. I think the main core of this purdue team finally understands what it takes to get there... now we just have to get the supporting cast to adapt quickly and not cost us that chance. It would also be nice for JJ to avoid the foul bug....
Guys, remember back when Purdue and the Big Ten was part of the ESPN Full Court college basketball package? That ended when the BTN was born. What you saw last night was part of SEC's ESPN Full Court package so that explains their announcers... just to be clear. Be honest... if Alabama was ranked #4 and playing an unranked Purdue at Mackey and Purdue was ahead by 16... I'm thinking Larry Clisby would be SEC bashing and our students would be doing the "over-rated" chant.
Anyway, we enjoyed a defining moment of this early season and I couldn't be more proud of my Boilers.
ChicagoBoiler -- Not sure about that. You think the students would chant "over-rated" before the game was decided? I do not. Our fans are smarter than that and that's not bias talking.
Aitch -- I tend to agree that Dykes isn't bad and he isn't impossible to listen to... but he did have a hard-on for 'bama. However, I think he did his homework because he knew the Boilers and some details broadcasters don't always know.
Zlions -- Officiating isn't by conference in hoops like it is in football. Zebras rotate games/conferences.
Don't defend Jimmy Dykes. The guy was awful. What does ranking vs. reality mean anyway? And did anyone else here him use the word "salutorian" to refer to the second highest graduate in a class? Jimmy obviously wasn't the salutatorian of his class.
Also, there is no way Purdue moves to #3 in the polls. UK beat a ranked team on a neutral court and a major conference team on the road. If anything, they should jump Texas (best wins are W. Carolina and Pitt). I could see ranking KU, UK, PU, UT, but it's not going to happen. Purdue will be #4.
I agree with most of these comments, especially in that the commentary was awful. I have no hesitation to mute the tv and play my ipod, usually loudish, while watching the game. It helps mute my rants and screams at the television. The wife and dogs appreciate the ipod noise to mute my excitement as well. But honestly, the spacing against the press, the lackadaisical passes, passes across the court through the middle of the defense...it was not what I was expecting to see from the #4,5,6 team in the country...whatever that matters.
However, as the respect goes, the Boilers must earn it. We have to continue to carry our lunch pails and go to work every game. MSU and Wiscy will be tough opponents...respect is earned. I got into it last year with an SI reporter that picked UConn to win by 12. I was pissed. I thought that's disrespectful. This IS Purdue basketball and we don't just roll over, especially come tournament time....until we did...and UConn won by 12. We will earn the respect,eventually....until then I perfectly smug watching the awesome defensive efforts and the "quiet" roll of wins ticking off on the tape.
