Sunday Ramblings

Congrats!!
J Money, Jr. was born this morning. Just over 8 pounds and 21 inches...he's a big dude, even a few weeks early. He's already been added to the BS payroll...and is already a better writer than I is.

Brett Favre, career consultant
I'm sure you all know this, but Urban Meyer backed up his resignation from the U of F with some verbal remarks...of course, he's not resigning, kinda...and is taking a leave of absence. Good to know he's feeling better!

I think we all know the reason for Urban's emotional distress- It's, of course, the fact that he's so upset that his dream job in South Bend has been filled and he isn't UND's next coach. Poor guy.

What the??
I've told a lot of people that I don't think it's fair to consider me a Colts fan. I like to Colts, follow them and want them to win...but I don't invest too much money or time into Irsay's organization.

My family and I got together to watch the game tonight and I've come to an opinion- The Colts have effectively already lost their playoff game.

Their offense is based on tremendous timing and precision. And while the Colts' starters rest over the next few weeks, their potential opponents will be staying sharp. The Colts' margin for error has become amazing-thin with this move.

The last time the Colts did this, it didn't work out well...Furthermore, when was the last time an NFL squad had it's starters only play spot duty, or less, for three-straight weeks and did well in the playoffs? If anyone knows, please sound off.

I hope I'm wrong, but I doubt it.

First off, congrats to both of you on the children.

Regarding the Colts, all the starters played the entire game last week vs. Jacksonville, and the starters played the first 2.7 quarters again today. Many key defensive and offensive line players even played the whole game. I expect many to rest next week, but that is still far from them all resting for 3 consecutive weeks. The team looked pretty sharp in the first half when the starters were doing their thing, and I expect it to continue into the postseason.

Guess we'll see. It sure worked well last time.

Congrats, J

And re: Indy, all I can say is that Painter looked about like I remember him when he came in for Manning.

You're actually quite wrong on the rest thing. There are posts about it at 18to88.com and stampedeblue.com that detail what actually happened.

The Colts have started games in the playoffs just fine, and IIRC they actually have lead at half-time in just about all of the supposed games they were rusty. The losses are closely tied to the health of the team, and especially key defensive guys. Yeah, they've lost in the first round recently, but it's not been rust as the offense has played fairly well in those games.

What's their record in those games again?

So you're telling me two Colts sites tell us that in spite of the end result, it was a good decision.

Indeed.

Well, Peyton Manning is the current head coach. So he can do no wrong according to those sites!!

So, you should make a poll. Who is less of a head coach...JoePa or Caldwell?

E, Manning was pretty pissed about not playing...he wasn't angry with himself.

I think he came into the game in the second half as a part of a compromise...the compromise left no one happy.

Just stumbled across an article of some random guy who went to the SIU-Edwardsville game last week. He was impressed with Purdue, Mackey Arena, and our fans. Check it out:

Congrats to J and the Mrs., and welcome to the world Baby Money. I think it was Willie Nelson who said those sage words: Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Hoosiers (or Domers, whichever).

Pissing off your roster and your star player seems like a less than ideal way to prepare for the playoffs. Did you see manning's demeanor on the sideline after being pulled? He looked physically ill at watching his chance of perfection fade away.

How many times do we need to have a repeat of the 05 and 07 debacles before Polian sees that resting players isn't the best way to prepare for the playoffs. The first round bye is the time for rest. LIke you said, the Colts offense is all about timing and precision. Its hard to precise after a 3 week break.

Bill Polian has no clue what he is doing.

boilerdowd,

They don't say it's the right or wrong method, but that it doesn't appear to actually have an effect. If you look at other teams as well, the effect just doesn't show up. Same with momentum. Your gut feelings don't back up the actual data, sorry.
