Krushed Orange

"Man, I am glad we practiced our free throws..."

When you watch a game without the sound and with other distractions around you, it changes your perspective. This is how I watched today's game, from a bar after a round of golf (yeah, it was almost 70 in Houston today). What became apparent to me was that the Boilers didn't play their best game, but they showed the mettle of a championship kind of team but doing what I feel like we've written before -- slowly grinding an opponent into submission, winning 75-65.

After the first half, once again the Boilers were trailing. Illinois was playing hard, inspired ball and the Boilers looked somewhat out of sync. JJ never got going today, winding up with only five points, shooting a lovely 10% (1-10) from the field. Yeesh.

However, as the game is winding down, you look up and the Boilers have a ten point victory, after winning the second half, 43-30. No matter what changes with this team, one thing seems to be consistent -- they're a second half squad and they outlast almost everyone. AND they cannot be beaten by most teams just because you're able to shut down one of the Big Three. You'll have to shut down at least two of them and even then you might be in trouble. (Incidentally, I got into a Twitter argument a couple of weeks ago with Brent from the Big Ten Network because he suggested the Boilers could be weak in the tourney because they "only" had three scorers. Even with "only" Smooge, Ostrich and JJ, I like our chances -- which is what I told him -- but if KG and CK are coming to play, too....well, the black and gold are a tough out in that scenario.)

Rob Hummel was again a catalyst, but not with his shooting from the field (4-13). No, Rob -- and others -- punished the Illini from the line, with the Ostrich going a cool 12 of 12, finishing with a double-double again, with 22 pts and 12 rebs. Smooge has his typically efficient 18 while shooting 50% from the field, and our old friend Keaton Grant continued his re-emergence from whatever fog he's been in for a while, with a nice 15 points on 50% shooting from the field (including 3 of 5 from 3 pt land) and 100% shooting from the line (6 of 6).

As you watch a game like this, sometimes it's hard to put your finger on what made the difference. And when that's the case, you expect it to be a last-second kind of win. Yet the Boilers wind up winning by ten. Why is this? Becuase they're a damn good team. A team that finds a way to win even when they shoot 36% from the field as a team.

Five FT attempts? Seriously??

Oh, yeah, and it's also easier to find that way to win when you get to the line. Both teams hit 50% of their threes, but the difference was, as mentioned, at the line, where the Boilers went an impressive 24 of 28 while the Illini amazingly only went 3 of 5. Outscoring a team by 21 at the line will often make up for any other shortcomings.

This was unquestionably a dangerous game for Purdue. Illinois is tough and Coach Weber always has them ready...AND it's not like it's impossible that the Boilers could have looked ahead to their road tilt at Minny, followed by the huge game at home against MSU. Good work to everyone for staying sharp -- sharp enough to win an hugely important game.

The win puts the Boilermakers into a tie (in both the win and loss columns) with Michigan State for the Big Ten lead, and pushes their current winning streak to nine. The Boilers, as you likely know, continue to be a very streaky team, having won 14 to open the season, followed by three losses....and now followed by these nine wins. This team is 22-3, everybody. Twenty-two and three. Something special is happening here and we're all witnessing it.

So what's up, Boilermaker faithful? Your thoughts are welcome....Are you feeling better after this game? Worse? About the same?

The #1 most important thing to come out of this game is that Keaton Grant appears to have a little bit of his mojo back. You nailed it, if he and CK combine for 20 in a game the Boilers are going to be awfully hard to beat. Today illustrated why that idiot who called the OSU game is, in fact, an idiot. I muted the game after he exclaimed how amazing Purdue's lead was despite Hummel not scoring. One would have thought a BTN announcer would know that Purdue is a well rounded team. When one of the big 3 is off, the others pick it up for him. Today it was Rob and E'Twaun. Sprinkle in a little Keaton and Kramer, and this is going to be a fun 10 weeks.

It seems like an opponent's top players always get theirs (The Villain, McCamey, even Taylor Battle) but it's Purdue's ability to shut down the supporting cast that have lead to this string of W's. I like what I'm seeing this season and purchased my tickets to the Big Ten tourney.

Also, I believe Purdue is 23-3 now. 14 wins, 3 losses, 9 wins = 23.

I think the opinion that we 'grind other teams into submission' is very apt. The mascotless Illini were shooting like a pro team most of the game, but we just had more will to win the thing in the end, and imposed our will on them.

I feel about the same, which is pretty damn good. As mentioned in the write-up, it is awfully impressive that Purdue can have an off night from the floor and still win by ten. The reason for that is the two things Painter preaches about most: rebounding and taking care of the basketball. If the ESPN box score is correct, Purdue had seven more rebounds and nine fewer turnovers. That is 16 more possessions for the Boilers, and those are the things that win games, even when the other team is on fire.

The Boilers do seem to be a little vulnerable when trying to cover ball-screens (Note today, IU, Wisconsin), especially when the opponent has a big guy who can shoot (Nankivil, Tisdale/Davis). We all yell at JJ to get back when he hedges, but it is just as much on the guards to fight trhough those screens. If the other teams big man can't shoot its not really an issue, but if he can it is sometimes an issue for the Boilers.

However, there is not much to complain about here. An overall great win despite the shooting both ways. If they can get through the Minny game the place will be awesome next Sunday with the BT title on the line. BTFU!

Yeah, Purdue was 22-3 going into the game.

KG's play in the last few games has been huge. Anything the rest of the team can do takes pressure off the Big Three. (FWIW, Evan Turner University has the same number of players listed as Significant Contributors or better, plus they have two starters under Limited Roles and only one Role Player. To put that in perspective, Purdue has five Role Players, headed by Grant and Barlow. I guess ETU shouldn't even show up to the Big Ten Tournament.)

The officiating was sketchy in both directions, as usual, but the announcers seemed to miss how Purdue was getting some of these free throws. (Some of it was home court, I would guess.) Illinois was running the same perimeter offense Purdue has used in losses in years past ... looks great if you hit, but gets you nothing if you miss. Time and again Purdue would go inside and get points or FTs. I like seeing Purdue draw fouls and make free throws. That is tournament basketball.

I don't like them letting good-but-weaker teams hang around. Illinois is pretty solid, but in Mackey Purdue should win that one well, and they really didn't. (Weber got himself T'd up in the final 30 seconds or so for something inexplicable. I guess he was bored, or maybe just tired of the same crap officiating everyone else sees.)

But it's nice trying to decide how big a win has to be in order for it to really mean something ... in past years, games like this would be losses on the road, maybe even at home. Instead. Purdue has a chance to have this record against Big Ten teams in or near the tournament:

MSU, 2-0
OSU, 1-1
Illinois, 2-0
Wisconsin, 1-1
Minnesota, 2-0

Add in wins against Tennessee, Wake Forest, and West Virginia, and Purdue's resume is definitely looking like a #1 seed's, providing they take care of business. Win the last four conference games, then dispatch the 8-9 winner and the 4-5 winner (which should be another notch in the belt above), and you're looking at a 29-3 team with a #1 seed locked up before they play for the Big Ten title.

I know, there's a long way to go, and Penn State can spoil this if Purdue doesn't play well (yes they can; don't tell me Talor Battle can't score 40 at home if you let him), but it's much more possible now than it was two weeks ago.

And yes, if they go 30-3 and lose in the second round of the NCAAs, it won't mean diddly ... but this team looks at least as likely as any other to put the "five championships" meme to rest.

Definitely feel good about this game. It's not completely rational that we would play every game at our best. But during the three game slide, JJ played awful and we lost. He played subpar today.....but we still won by ten. Boiler Up

Great win. I'm a bit worried about Minnesota, but hopefully the players aren't overlooking anything.

I thought the atmosphere in the second half was the best Mackey has been this season. Hopefully we can take it up another notch next weekend.

We took a good team's best shot today... and still won by double digits. Illinios had a great gameplan and did a super job doubling JJ, and at times, Moore. This was a great win. Onward.

Before the game, LewJack gathered the team and said, "Now's our time, we control our own destiny. Let's play our game...Final Four on three..."

"FINAL FOUR.

Their focus is on the big picture. But to win in the tourney, they've got to win now. I think they get that.

Illinois was well-prepared and moved the ball very well, better than anybody I've seen this season, versus Purdue. Great win.

You all are absolutely right, this team is special. They aren't one-and-doners and they aren't thugs. They play great, inspired team basketball that is a joy to watch.

And for the Illini message board stooges who think our Boilers "flop", watch the replay of Kramer getting an arm to te face, maintaining his momentum and scoring a huge basket at the time. CK is a game-changer who will be missed.

Boiler up.

I was worried with how Illinois was shooting so well in the 1st half.

I disagree with benching Moore when he picked up his 2nd foul. 2 fouls for a guard in the first half is not cause for concern. Purdue's offense really struggled during those 10 minutes when he was out.

Anyone else notice JJ not boxing out on D? At least twice he stood there and watched a shot bounce off the rim and his man went right by him to grab the rebound. Infuriating.

Free throws and rebounds won us this game. On another note I am getting extremely tired of the Mackey crowd lately. This was a big game for Purdue but besides for one or two small stretches, the crowd was not in it until around the final five minutes. There was more than one time when the crowd was louder with a chant while Purdue was on offense than they were when the Illini had the ball. Mackey should be rocking everytime the opponent is on offense. I hope that the atmosphere for Michigan State and IU will be electric.

This win and hopefully the next, will say a lot about the team: Are they truly championship worthy? Or just talented?

JJ struggling, bad officiating, and poor shooting have usually meant a loss, but this team found a way to win against a team with an entire week to prepare, get fresh, and reinsert themselves into the Big Ten mix.

Yet, Purdue showed poise, battled hard, and played smart. This is as good a Purdue team as I've seen.

I ran into Keaton Grant at Red Lobster a couple hours after the game and told him he had his shot back - you could tell he felt good about that game.

Love that guy, glad he's back!

Bloomington Boiler -- Hope you had a couple baskets of the cheddar bay biscuits. I could eat 25 of them without taking a breath.
