Can't Give Up on These Two

At the beginning of their time at Purdue, two members of this year's Senior class were probably given a better chance for success because of two ACLs that tore before they arrived in God's country. David Teague and Carl Landry were both held out in '05-'06 because of knee injuries...and they both came back strong in the following year. That fall was the first semester on campus for KG and CK3.

Purdue had been on the decline for a few seasons- the twilight of Keady's tenure at Purdue left a court named after him and a few seasons that almost-everyone wanted to forget. And his successor had little-to-no success in '05/'06 as he bandaged the line-up with walk-ons, transfers and players that really didn't fit the Purdue mold. But the foundation of Matty's philosophy is well-embodied in Grant and Kramer.

Both were 3-star athletes, according to Rivals. Grant came to West Lafayette via Bridgton Academy Prep in Maine. He was offered by a slew of SEC programs who knew him from his HS career in Florida, as well as a team he'd later run into in the state of Washington, UW...but decided to come play for Matty. Kramer was known in the AAU ranks for his athleticism and ability to defend and break people down off the dribble. He was also known for his exploits on the football field as he passed for over 1,300 yards and ran for around 1,000.

They both played a ton as Freshman...honestly, they had to. But they answered the bell. Both ended their Frosh seasons with some noteworthy moments offensively...but, probably most-important to their coach, they both were in the top-5 all time for steals as Freshman- Kramer first, Grant, fifth.

That first year, Grant and Kramer both played a lot of point guard, played a few more minutes than might have been ideal and physically beat on themselves not backing down to the upper classmen they defended night-in, night-out. Along with Teague and Landry, they led Purdue to the NCAA tournament...where they beat the favored #8 seed Arizona Wildcats. The game is probably best-remembered for Kramer's shot from his knees. Purdue lost the next round to the later-crowned National Champ Florida Gators.

The next year, Kramer and Grant's hard-nosed, never-say die attitude taught the Baby Boilers what would be expected of them by their coach. Keaton Grant grew into one of the BT's best three-point shooters and the team's MVP. Kramer became the league's most-hated player (outside of West Lafayette, of course). Purdue's record improved to 24-8, and earned the Boilers the 6 seed. They were once again playing a team that the media was in love with, Baylor. Many thought Purdue couldn't keep up with Baylor's fast pace and size...They did, of course...the runnin' Boilers won 90-79. The next round, Purdue fell to the FF-bound Xavier Muskies.

In '08/'09, Expectations were high for the now-maturing Boilers. Purdue's identity as a defensively-minded team was well in place. But, in the off-season KG and Kramer both had surgery to help get the hobbled veterans back up to speed. Kramer was at 100% at the beginning of that season...but Grant wasn't. Gone was his explosiveness and along with that, the lack of reps in the off-season seemed to have adversely-affected his long-range jumper. Purdue battled during this season...Battled through Hummel's back injury, Kramer's ankle injury, and later broken nose, KG's recovery, and a flu that seemed to go around the team twice. But at the end of the season, everything kind of came together as the Boilers won the BTT title and earned a 5 seed. The first round, they beat Northern Iowa. But the next round, once-again, no one thought they could win as they were just three hours away from UW in Portland, OR (thanks committee). But, tough defense and a general angry demeanor fueled Purdue to victory. The next round, they lost to UConn...who went to the FF.

This season started off much-better than '08/'09. Everything was clicking. Grant's explosiveness had returned, Kramer swam Purdue to victory in the US Virgin Islands and the Boilers started off strong. After a hiccup in the mid-season, Purdue found its rhythm once-again and looked to be heading toward big things in the late season...and then, another ACL injury to one of The Big Three rocked the Boilers. In this injury, it seems harder to find the silver lining than the previous two that changed the trajectory of Grant and Kramer's collective college basketball career. And since then, Purdue has been all-but left for dead. But, Purdue did enough to win a share of the BT regular season title.

I think the easiest thing to do right now for many Purdue fans is begin looking toward the future. Lots of talent should be returning and a stacked recruiting class is on its way it...BUT, KG and Kramer are on their way out. Their importance to this team shouldn't be discounted. From clutch three-point shooting by Grant throughout the last four seasons to Kramer's uncanny knack to find a way to put himself in harm's way, these guys deserve a much better sendoff than what we saw Saturday night...We know it...and so do they.

Now, Purdue is once-again the underdog heading into the dance. Everyone points to Siena's tournament record, their athleticism and Purdue's rebounding woes as some of the reasons a victory by Siena wouldn't even be considered an upset.

Purdue's been pretty inconsistent in its offensive production of late, even before the Minny game...and looks like a team that is still trying to figure out its identity in the wake of Hummel's injury. This early spring isn't going at all like most Purdue fans thought it'd be going at this point, no doubt about that. And now, a season-long top-5 team who was staring at a possible 1 seed looks like it's now a long shot just to get out of the first round of the NCAA tourney.

So, if you need it, I'll give you two good reasons this team is still dangerous...and why you simply cannot give up on the Boilers.

Great post! Nice youtube vids. Way to keep the faith alive as we ride this wave of less-than-low expectations by anyone and everyone with airtime to comment on bracketology. We all know CK won't give up until the last tic of the gameclock...

Great write-up. I feel like I should have had background music (eye of the tiger?) playing while i read that in my office. I don't have the hubris I did one month ago, but dammit I'm keeping the faith for the boilers. Mainly, as you pointed out, bc these two seniors are special. Boiler up purdue faithful.

By the way, Kramer was a 2star guy.

Well, it will be some consolation to note that if somehow Purdue does lose in the first round, Siena will make it to the Final Four.

I have found a spare case of optimism in the pantry, and I will be working on it through Friday afternoon. This is just one game. Regardless of who is healthy and who is not, anything can happen ... Smooge could score 4 points and they still might win. (Let's not test that theory.)

Hey, let's not forget that some of these same know-it-alls were touting Penn State as a team "you didn't want to face" in the Big Ten Tournament, and others are the ones that go out on a limb and pick all 1s and 2s in their bracket. Because, you know, that happens a lot. (For the Dick Vitales among us: that means never. All four 2s haven't made it to the regional finals since 1996; 2007 is the only year that seven of the eight top-seeded teams made the regional finals.)

Hey Buzz, I beg to differ...so does Rivals.

Is it just me, or did these clips of early season Kramer depress anyone else? He just seems a lot nastier, intense than he does now.

Maybe it was the ankle injury, maybe he's just worn down, but he doesn't look the same to me...

I hope we see the re-emergence of the Boilers that played 'Bama earlier this season. Tough. Nasty. Refuse to lose.

Terrific post! Let's not forget what a great season it has been, regardless of the outcome of the tourney. Yes, we all want to do well in the tourney, but they did play 30+ games that represented Purdue well and continues to make Purdue relevant in the Big Ten and national mix. And more importantly to me and hopefully all Boiler fans, they play basketball the way most basketball fans want to see it played. Would you prefer to be in the Hoosiers' footprints and have a punk like Turner representing you? I am quite proud to be a Boiler fan and true supporter. Sure it's a shame as to what has happened, but keep the big picture of Big Ten title and things to come with Matty at the helm. Thank you CK and KG for four great years of effort, re-starting Purdue pride and representing Purdue University.

A proud Boiler!!!

Agreed Dozer...and haven't been able to figure out the reason.

The entire team needs an injection of "mean" right now.

I like your enthusiasm but I don't think too many people are questioning Purdue FANS heart at this point.

These 2 need to not give up on themselves. They control what happens in the tournament, not the fans. If they want to go out with a bang they have the opprotunity. Everyone thinks Siena has Purdue right where they want them. Kramer and Grant have the chance to punch them in the throat at the beginning of the game on Friday. Let's see if they seize the moment. If they can make a run in this tournament everyone will forget about the Hummel injury and will remember the heart of these 2.

Kramer is most definitely a 3 star recruit.

This group has always played above the expectations of the experts when it comes to the tourney. I think we make it to the Sweet 16 with a double digit win vs. Siena (hello, have you seen their resume??)- the experts are nuts and I think the Boilers should be pretty pissed and pretty motivated. Then we squeak by A&M.

Depending on who makes it to the Sweet 16 with us, we could still make the Elite 8- Even Duke (if they are having an off-night shooting). I am still positive, but I also thought we would make a run in the 2nd half of the Minny game. I just can't imagine that Kramer, knowing it could be his last game, is ever going to quit. But, then again, we all know about my huge crush on Kramer and maybe I just don't want to see his last game!

I just ran the Brackcaster that ESPN has on their website for the fun of it. Obviously I did the South bracket. The one time I did it, it had Purdue beating Villanova to get to the final four. I'm just going to stare at this throughout the day to try and get me feeling better again....

*I am posting this here as I can't seem to figure out how to send this message just to the staff*

Hey,
I am a current 5th year Senior at Purdue so I have been through it all since we started to become good. I've been going to games even during the last year we were bad and I LOVE my Boilers and always will.

I believe I am feeling a bit upset with this year as this is my last year here (yes, I am being greedy and wanted to win it all this year and get to travel to the FF in Indy since I will not be here next year) and I really felt we had a 60% chance to make it to the FF prior to the injury and a 40% chance to win it all (yes, those stats are made up by just my feelings). Now, I feel it is more like a 1% chance for the FF and 0.1% to win it all.

I was in the Paint Crew and we were told to "cheer even louder" and "don't give up hope" after the injury. I have tried so hard to do it but I am finding it hard. CK and KG have put in their 4 years to this program and sacrificed their bodies for the cause. When your backs are against the wall, you need to pull out all the stops and do whatever it takes to win and frankly, I do not feel this team is doing that. It seems more and more like they are just giving the "wait till next year" approach...just look at the EFFORT in the Minn game and you will see what I mean. As a fan, how can I get hyped when I see them "mailing it in"? Yes, I know no matter what we did in the BTT, it was not going to help us (and it did not help us last year) but a total lack of effort? I still feel in a fog as if the Minn (the injury) game was just a bad dream and I am just going to wake up and find Hummel ok...but I know that is unreal now.

Still though, why is Painter not doing more to try and make this team win? We have Samdi Marcus (I suggested this weeks ago to a few friends), and there is NO WAY he could be worse then "do nothing tub of lard" Bade who is just as good as that white forward from a few years back that was done in one year with the team...what was his name?...Vandaverian?

Yes, I understand the whole recruiting stuff you would have to deal with taking a redshirt off this late, but it has been done before (Travis Zeller). Samdi is 6'10"/260 or so and this would allow you to have JJ be more of a forward and shoot his jumpers as he loves to do (this would allow us to go double big as Minn does). Then teams would stop doubling JJ and Moore and leaving just their 5th defender to put pressure on the ball as we all know the others mostly do not like to take shots unless the lane is open. [Grant is good the last 2 mins of games but since Soph year, everyone knows he is more of a "brick" maker than a 3-shooter (other than those few games near the end of the season...AFTER he was benched just into the season)].

Yes, I understand taking the redshirt off would upset some people and I can accept if we don't decide to do it, but then please do not deny we are just saying "whatever" to this season, "we will just try as best we can with what we have...that's it" Doesn't CK and KG deserve better? Don't they deserve for us to do whatever we can to win now?

Nothing is certain and I understand that. We could possibly still not win with Samdi and then waste a year from him. But also, other teams could be better next year...way better. A major injury could come again next year and then we do not have CK or KG to help us. Maybe Hummel is just injury prone? Who knows? All I know is you should always go for it...teams who say "next year" rarely make it back. I just feel we are setting ourselves up.

Thanks for reading. I will still be routing us on in the NCAAs with all my might...just wanted to get this out there.

I am watching the PU-KU game from 1994 and can't beleive what I am seeing. I don't know that this team, even with Hummel, stacks up. That was our chance. Maybe next year we might be that good, but we definitely weren't that this year. I still think Sweet 16 this year, but next year will be our best shot.

boilerdowd said...

Boilergal, if you doubt the current players, with Hummel, watch a film of the WVU game. This team, when healthy, is a machine. Like you, I watched both teams with my own eyes, live. Purdue went to the FF in '80. Had the ability to do so again with the 3 Amigos and again in 2000.

Make no mistake, you didn't graduate from George Mason that has but one opportunity...they've come along before, they will again...and I still believe that Painter will get it done.

Cardsman, I understand your points, and the Minnesota game was one of the least-watchable contests I've seen, football or basketball, since I've rooted for Purdue (I was born in '75 and was brainwashed early...so I think that's going back to around '82 or so).

But, to say they're mailing it in simply isn't fair. All three of Purdue's assistant coaches played basketball at a high level as did the head coach. The entire group, whether soft-spoken or brash all want to win at everything they do. These guys get to where they are not only with their talent, but with their will. But, in my opinion, they were, even Kramer, still in a malaise. Like you, they saw themselves in Indy this year...how much more does it smart from their perspective than yours from the seats?

Perhaps the Great Debacle of '10 was enough of a blast to wake them from their slumber. If not, nothing would have or will and they're already done. I don't believe they are just yet.

I had season tickets during the Glenn years and this year. I guess I just forgot how good that team was until I saw the game last night. I know this year's team was good, it just seems that the 1994 team had a lot of the parts that this year's team is missing. Can you imagine this team being able to have 2 players scoring 29 and 44 in the same game. I think this team is just too timid and a bit too laid back. It will be scary next year when Kramer is gone, who will bring the fire?

Cardsman said...

Boilergal,

I think this team, when it gets all the parts back, will be fine. Yes, we lose CK and his fire (and defense) and that is what I am most worried about. But Hummel has fire like Kramer and should be able to readily supply in that area as long as he is able to stay healthy for a full year for the first time in 2 years. What we are lacking this year is size/rebounding "in the paint" muscle. As I mentioned before, we have Samdi Marcus redshirted on the bench. He is about 6'10"/260 and averaged 15 ppg, 15 rpg, 7 bpg his Senior year in HS. That is impressive even if he didn't play against the toughest HS competition (I have no idea if he did). He only came over to the US prior to his Senior year and since coaches now a days try to recruit players when they are HS sophomores, he was able to fly under the radar. He has been listed as one of the top players at his position and all of the recuiters were surprised he was not gobbled up by the likes of Big East teams, MSU, or aOSU. Fortunately, Painter got to him first.

What this means is you can let him play center and actually show muscle down in the Paint (first Purdue player to do that well since Glenn...possibly Landry). Then you can move JJ to forward where he can shot his jumpers as well as get to the lane. It will almost be as if we are going double big like Minn...though we will be a TON better at it (think size like UConn last year). Rob will be the other forward. Then you can have Moore and another guy (Barlow? Hopefully he will get a lot better in his Soph year) play as guards. Just thinking of that lineup and what you would have on the bench would be scary good. Just imagine...that lineup can still play stellar defense and ALL 5 of them could actually score! No more "offensively challenged" players having to work major minutes and having to try and score....hopefully.
