Our pal Sara summed it up well- it was like a bad dream. Indeed. In Painter's five years, with the exception of possibly the loss to Wofford, there hasn't been a truly embarrassing game. Furthermore, The Big Three, this Senior class and this coaching staff...heck, maybe no Purdue team in the last 23 years or so has, has put in such a poor effort. And make no mistake- this one's at the feet of everyone from Matty to the trainers (sorry guys...everyone's culpable). But, one might argue that poor efforts have reared their ugly heads a few times this season, and this wasn't new. From the awful performance v. MSU (16 second half points, while allowing 27) to the loss at Purdue v. aOSU...In fact, take away the Ostrich's legendary 29-point first half, and Purdue had a mere 12 points...kinda familiar. Without Rob's sharp shooting, the team would have shot in the upper-mid-3os...no where near the collective 27% we saw yesterday.
Bad starts are something Painter's talked about quite a few times, but this one was for the ages...everyone needs to move on. But it might be hard to do.
Things gotta change. Perhaps the rotation needs to be shaken up again as Moore's shooting, with the exception of one game, has been awful since his pal went down with an ACL injury...in fact, his free throw shooting has even been affected. I'm not saying to bench Smooge, but I am saying something needs to be done. Maybe it's a player's meeting, maybe it's watching this painful game tomorrow in the film room and having the sobering realization that it wasn't just a nightmare...but something's gotta change. If not, an unthinkable one-and-done in the dance is well-within the realm of possible.
This team did something that I didn't think they could do- they made me really doubt them. Now hear this- I'm still going to cheer for them, get crushed when they lose, spend too much time thinking about match-ups and not be shocked if they lose...But this one was a shot to the collective psyche of the Purdue family. I think we all hurt this morning.
Before yesterday's game, after listening to hours of blah blah blah from the heads, I was convinced that Purdue could not, and would not help themselves with a tournament championship...Maybe Matty believed it too...and/or the team thought that was the case. So they were looking ahead to the big tourney. Heck, their bigtime effort in last year's BTT didn't do them any good...maybe they thought bowing out wouldn't hurt 'em too badly. And honestly, it probably wouldn't have...if they hadn't lost in such a completely catastrophic manner.
But they did.
Coach Painter said the guys looked gassed and Minny didn't...from my comfy chair, I'd say he was right. And in my opinion, that was mental. Remember when you were 19 or 20 (for some of you, it's pretty easy to do). I remember playing ball at the Co-Rec for three hours on Friday night and starting Saturday morning the same way...I didn't get tired. Neither do these guys who are trained and tuned to play this game, play it well and play it often. Purdue, at some point, made a decision that it wasn't of the highest priority to give it all yesterday...and nearly-every stat backs this up. From only rebounding the ball 32 times while allowing 55 rebounds, to allowing Minny to shoot 50% to settling for fade-away jumpers instead of trying to get into the lane- this one was decided before the tip-off.
So, while I might really hate it, all my Boilers did yesterday was make ill-informed jacks like Goodman, Katz, Lunardi, Lavin and others look like geniuses...at least when Purdue's the topic. And me thinks the drum that they've been beating coupled with what we all witnessed yesterday will combine to give Purdue a 3 to 5 seed. Something that we all thought was nearly-impossible just 48 hours ago.
But things are what they are...and now it's time to move on, one way or another. With Grant & Moore shooting horribly, Jackson possibly injured, Johnson (and everyone else) not being in the mood to rebound or mix it up under the basket, my favorite team is a shell of itself. While I want to compartmentalize this last game, I'm having a really hard time doing it.
Hopefully Matty and company can.

And I thought I couldn't get any more depressed.
A few silver linings that helped me get out of bed this morning:
1. Our refusal to show up today really did help the conference. Minny is close to a lock according to most.
2. A big ol' helping of humble pie before the big dance could be turned into a good thing.
3. Our all-time winning record against all Big11Ten teams will not be in jeopardy since we don't have to face OSU.
4. For personal reasons, I'd rather lose to Minnesota than those schmucks from Columbus.
5. I have enough faith in our guys (especially seniors) that they don't want this game to be the last thing that people remember about the 2009-2010 campaign. Look back, it's been a hell of alot of fun.
6. We still get to hang a banner in Mackey next year.
7. At least we're not IU.
Regarding #6: You know that's going to be the most bittersweet banner hanging in the history of the program. All of Mackey will be thinking one thing: what else could we be hanging if that ligament holds together?
Ryan F; We wouldn't be hanging ANYTHNG else and we all know it! If this team can get beat that bad EVER without one guy , then surely they would get pasted by the fist semi-athletic squad that rolled in even with Hummel.
It seems that Rob really is the Larry Bird of this team. Not in points, but in court sense and a calming ability etc. Next year sadly is the plea right now. IF the big three stay healthy and return, we'll have maturing players Barlow, LewJack, Hart , Byrd and some height coming in to help on the boards and maybe that kid Marcius can bound some!?! I won't even mention Bade as he seriously looks like one of the worst big men in Purdue history. Greg Eifert not with standing. Wait a minute , I loved Eifert...
It will help Minnesota ... I'm surprised people are still talking about Illinois still being close to the edge, but then there really aren't too many teams left behind them.
Minnesota's win hurt MSU, but then with West Virginia and Georgetown playing well in the Big East, MSU was probably going to drop anyway. (Something to note re: expansion. Maybe we should expand beyond 12 so we can get some more bids we don't deserve.)
Side note: Syracuse as a #1. Once again the Big Ten champ gets screwed. Not that I particularly care for OSU, and yeah, they didn't play great in the first two days, but they did win and Syracuse did not. (Of course Purdue could explain how that goes from last year: apparently the committee prejudges certain top teams, and if you're not in that group, you can't get in no matter what happens in conference tournaments.)
Painter will have one game to get the troops rallied ... if they're a #4, they won't get a weak conference champion, but they may get a weak bubble team (obviously not Illinois or Minnesota). Hopefully they'll have enough to get by and learn for their second-round game. At this point, anything beyond the second round is a bonus. I think we can agree that Purdue without Hummel has the talent to get at least to the Sweet Sixteen, but they have yet to show it.
It's true, we're not as bad off as IU is. Obviously there were different things going on there, but Painter did a great job with that 2006-07 squad, and Crean was not nearly as fortunate with this year's IU team. There are already rumblings in Bloomington about that record ...
Boilerbink, you discredited your opening statement with your own argument by saying Hummel is the Bird of this team. Exactly right, he carried ISU to the championship game, and I don't see why this team could have been any different. A Big Ten Tourney banner or a Final Four banner were easily within grasp, especially with this bracket we ended up with.
If anything came out of the Minnesota game it would of been Byrd.... but um that is it.
I am just really disappointed in JJ and Smooge.
WEll , let's say a MINI Larry Bird ,Ryan F, in influence not stature... but I hear ya' . I had my plane ticket and boys lined up to join me in Indy. Hopefully, the Minny game is some weird confluence of the stars. The draw isn't horrible , especially since everyone already thinks we're the underdog against Siena and then T- A&M, big deal, even Duke is the best of all one seed options for Purdue. This should be another great building block for the team before winning it ALL next year!!
These guys have played too hard and we've had a lot of enjoyment, so let's be there until the end...
BOILERUP!!!
I was so upset and embarrassed watching this game....the shooting was atrocious and I don't feel like Mr. Painter really did anything to address it or motivate anyone. The lineup choices he made at the beginning/mid second half were poor. And I'm sorry, but what does he have against posting JJ up down low? It seemed like every time I looked, the paint was empty and all of our posts were out setting piss-poor screens near or above the free throw line. I know he CAN shoot, but it wasn't happening, and I didn't think there was any effort to make any points in the paint to make up for our lack of long-range shooting.
I'm just hoping the complete embarrassment is motivation for them in the tournament....
