No Celebrating, Dammit!

So under the news rules in college football, which will allow officials to enforce taunting penalties from the spot of the taunting foul, this play would result in Purdue having the ball on about the 40.

Their own 40.

Yeah, that'll be awesome. Soon, cheering will be outlawed, too.

One of my favorite plays in recent Boilermaker history. What a travesty if things like that get wiped out because of a dumb rule like this.

Oh, but I do love it when a slow possession receiver has so much of a lead on any defender that he can start celebrating 60 yards from the endzone...

Particularly when said defenders are the Irish -- although I might have to consider that an oxymoron. Notre Dame Defender? Doesn't exist.

When I heard, in passing, about the new rule I was quite upset at the implications. But once I read the news story about it on ESPN.com I realized it's not as drastic as what I thought, nor as drastic as I think you're alluding to in this article.

Now, I can't remember, did that play draw a flag for excessive celebration? I don't think it did, though I certainly could be wrong. I've thinned the heard of weak brain cells since then.

The way I understand the new rule is that if a play draws an excessive celebration flag while in the field of play, the play is whistled dead at the spot. Up until now, the penalty was assessed after the play (on the PAT or kick-off). Excessive celebration in the end zone after a scoring play will still get treated the same as before.

Now, don't get me wrong, the excessive celebration rule is a joke! You can't expect these players to be robots out there. BUT, there is a difference between celebration and taunting. I have no probably with them cracking down on taunting and it seems that's what they're doing here with the rule change. It sounds like they're going to be lenient and only punish egregious behavior. Although, that's the flip side to this issue.... how do you do that consistently over all of college football given the vast number of games and officials involved?

As much as I hate ND, this morning ESPN showed Tate's TD against Michigan from this past year where he reached out to the endzone and sort of looked back and said in all likelihood it would be called back under the new rules. It looks like the discretion for this rule will go a lot further than people think. At what point is reaching for the endzone "pointing with the football"?

I'll look for a link to the video.

The 98 yard touchdown fist pump was my first thought when I heard about the rule. That play was worth every inch of the 15 yard penalty.

I was thinking about the play where Bolden made the mistake of acknowledging the mascot after scoring. (I think it was Bolden, but you know which one I mean.)

Then I thought about the penalty. And I pictured an official marking off 15 yards from the spot of the foul, walking forward out of the end zone, setting the ball down on the 2 or 3.

Hey, you've all seen Big Ten officials. Don't tell me it couldn't happen that way.

For the record, I would like something reasonable that is enforced against the worst taunting behavior, but given the terrible job the NCAA's done to date in that area, I have no reason to believe it will get any better this season.

This is really a bad idea. The last thing you need is to give the referees more license to make game changing calls. I'm not in favor of taunting, but college officials are incapable of having this level of responsibility.

The rule was to stop the obviously rehearsed BS celebrating AFTER a score. - or the throat cutting ghetto crap that coaches themselves should have punished in the first place.

So, once again, EVERYONE is punished for the actions of the few. What horseshit.

zlions- I think you're talking about Keller @ Toledo, right?

Nope, Bolden against Michigan State. You know, Bolden scores, Pete comes toward him ... but of course the NCAA has decreed NO CELEBRATING WITH MASCOTS.

That's not what college football is about, yo. College football is about robots and marionettes.

Dustin Keller was pointing to his brother in 1 of the first couple rows on that long TD he caught at the Glass Bowl in Toledo.

Keller was real real good for Purdue during his career, mainly his senior year when he was named team MVP.

It's good to see him doing well at the next level for the NY Jets too but not the Jets I really do not like the Jets and the fact that they stole Santonio from the Steelers for only a 5th rounder. A Super Bowl 43 MVP for a 5th rounder. The Jets, much to my disliking, are really making an effort to go far in the playoffs with some of their recent acquisitions. Keller should be a major reason to their success in the coming years too.

Speaking of Boiler Tight Ends, I walked past Timmy Stratton pushing a stroller (with his wife) yesterday.

I hope Kyle Adams and Jeff Lindsay have a big senior years.

It sounds like the coaches are high on the 2 new Boiler freshman TEs Gabe Holmes and De'Ron Flood. Do you think they can get some playing time this year playing behind 2 seniors (or 3 maybe...Panfil?). Could be doubtful. Maybe next year for those 2?
