Terrible News

Bringing the worst possible news to the Purdue sports world, ESPN and the Big Ten Network announced that Robbie Hummel tore his ACL in Purdue's first practice and will miss the 2010-2011 season.

This sucks.

Time for Moore and JJ to fake injuries and skip this year as well!

That's it, Purdue seriously needs to find a cure for ACL injuries. Screw NASA projects, throw that funding into Mr. Hummel's knee.

They mentioned during the football game that it was during practice today, for what it's worth.

I don't know where the ancient burial ground is, but it's obviously somewhere in the athletic complex, and we need to find it and restore it immediately.

I've already shifted - now excited to see if someone (Barlow, TJ, Byrd, Bade... who knows)can step up enough that Purdue is able to make a miracle run in the tourney - Do it for Robbie, etc.

Probably no B10 championship, but if someone gets hot, we still have the talent to go beyond the sweet 16.

Thanks for pointing out that it was today and not yesterday. I changed the post to reflect that.

Is it too late to get Hale on campus for this season? We need serious help at forward.

Wow every one is soooo ready to give up on the team already! Holy crap: We almost beat the national champs Dunk w/o him last year. This year we have a healthy Lew Jack, a bigger JJ, more experienced soph's and great Frosh! What's to think we can't win the Big 10 and go to Houston???? I say BS to otherwise! BOILER UP!

I don't think anyone is giving up on the season; we're simply adjusting our expectations.

Hard as it may be to remember, given how long it's been, Purdue with a healthy Hummel has played much better than Purdue without him. This year's team with a healthy Hummel was a legitimate national championship contender. Without him, they have yet to demonstrate they can be one.

Even having the talent and coaching is no guarantee of a Final Four appearance; when you're short in one area, it's that much harder to make it. I hope that they can do it, but it's going to be significantly more difficult than it looked to be yesterday.

Any chance he could come back in March or can he take a Medical Red Shirt?

If you're Rob do you go into rehab again with expectations that you'll play bball again? After an ACL tear its more likely to tear again as we saw.. after a 2nd tear.. it's very likely to tear again. I'm not giving up on the season but we have a real problem at the F position now.

HWP - I think he takes a medical redshirt..

Ohio State fan here. I'm really crushed for you guys. I was looking forward to a great Big Ten, and this really hurts. Purdue is by far the easiest non-OSU team for me to cheer for, largely b/c of Hummel. A real shame.

Jeff Goodman wrote that Rob texted him "I have a year and a half to get ready now." Not really sure how that math works out, but it's good to see that he's keeping his head up and plans to give it another shot.

Throw in the towel much? We still have 2 preseason Naismith candidates. We still have a great freshman class. We still have a fully healed point guard. We still have Matt Painter. We still have the ENTIRE season to play.

Does it suck? Sure.. mostly for Rob Hummel. Does it really feel like its over before it's even started? That. Is. Ridiculous.

Rob Hummel is endlessly optimistic, which is great b/c I'd be morbidly depressed.

I think Goodman embellishes his text message exchanges.

Hummel can redshirt, I believe, but I'd definitely be concerned about his ability to really ever count on the knee to be reliable again.

Much like Marve, I think this might be the end of the line.

Oh, also, have to disagree with co-editor that Purdue won't be a national force... they most certainly will be and are still a top ten team.

Sweet Baby Katz moved them down to the 20s on this Top25.....I hate that guy

Does this mean we're out of the Chasson race? Or is it possible for someone to give up a scholly next year or something?

DJS said...

As bad as this is, unlike last year we have the entire preseason to find someone to step up. Imagine if JJ and EM had gone pro!

I don't know what constitutes a national force, but I believe a top 10-15 team is that...and Purdue will be in that range for much of the season without Hummel, in my opinion.

Beer is wearing off and hadn't thought about this for a few hours until now. Sure, I'm sick to my stomach about this. Yes, about our FF chances and even a NC contention, but mostly for Rob. Hard working, straight laced, tough, competitive, Boilermaker. I feel empathetic. Speedy recovery Rob-still proud to call you a Boilermaker.

Cheers, BoilerUp...well said.

This team is deep and talented. It's a big blow, to be sure, but not a deal-breaker.

The bigger concern to me is the Shelbourne Clinic - aren't they the ones handling athletic injuries for Purdue? I mean, Marve's ACL is repaired and tears again. Hummel's ACL is repaired and tears again. If I'm Bolden, I'm walking CAREFULLY to another physician for another looksee.

Interesting article re Nike shoes and leg injuries posted in April 2010.

My sister found out about this from an "inside source" Fri afternoon. Apparently, they are now taking him to Ortho Indy, not Shelbourne. Looks to me like Purdue has lost its trust of Shelbourne. Not sure when the injury actually happened, but Fri afternoon was before the 1st practice. Interesting that the reports all say it happened Sat.
