Boilers Leave No Doubt V. Hated Rival in Mackey

With Vandy, MSU, Kentucky, Georgetown and others all suffering upset losses yesterday, Matty's squad seemed to be especially-ready to play for a high-noon tip-off versus the Hawkeyes. So tell me if you've heard this one:

Purdue's opponent looked sloppy, out of control, confused and out-manned in the opening minutes on Keady Court. It's something Purdue fans have become accustomed to, especially in the last few seasons. But, if I was to tell you that JJ and Smooge would be quiet offensively during that period, you'd probably think Purdue might be leading 18-16 at the half...but that wasn't the case.

As Purdue's All-America and Naismith Award candidates weren't on their game, Kelsey Barlow, Ryne Smith and LewJack were picking them up. Jackson drove and dished and finished when he had to, Barlow got hot for a spell and used his length and athleticism to score over smaller guards and, of course, Ryno made it rain like it was March in Portland.

I think we can officially say, Purdue has found its third scorer. I joked with J that Moore and Johnson decided to have these cold spells just to make #24 show the world what he does in practice. But in reality, Smith, Jackson and others are merely doing what they're capable of doing because they understand that it's a must if they are to become the team that many, including Matty, think they can become.

In the 75-52 victory, Purdue did what Matty likes to see and then some. They held their opponent under 59 points, they did much better from the free throw line than the last few games (shot 77%), a lot of guys got involved in the offense (4 in double figures, 8 scored points) and they won the rebounding battle yet again (35-28).

Moore had 11 points, 7 rebounds, and 4 assists. But, he only shot 33% from the field and struggled versus the trap that Coach Fran threw at him. But, he also exploited it after he got used to it. I'm sure he's looking forward to playing a team that plays man-to-man, but many teams may start asking which way they want to die- at the hands of Cool Hand Smooge or the Ryno "The Silencer" Smith. Regardless of which defense teams play, and Iowa played at least 5 types, Purdue seems to have an offensive answer right now.

Smith was the leading scorer for the second-straight game. He finished with 18 points, on 6/9 shooting, all from behind the arc. He also had 3 rebounds and 3 assists, but he played great defense on Gatens and was one of Purdue's guards who held Gatens in check for much of the game.

In fact, While the 23 point victory might seem to be pretty ugly, but honestly, it could have been much worse. Matty called off the dogs with about 5 minutes left and Purdue had a line-up that included Bade, Marcius and Day for a couple minutes. This game was far from perfect for Purdue, but the defense, combined with excellent team blocking out and solid shooting from a few guys made it no contest at all. Lets remember, Iowa was coming off of a close loss to aOSU and a game v. Illinois where they played well and stayed within striking distance for much of that contest. Purdue stopped any momentum the Hawkeyes might have had and made sure the game was interesting to no one outside of the Purdue family.

I continue to like what I see from LewJack- he had 7 points, while making all of his shots and added 5 rebounds and 7 assists. He had 4 turnovers though...so he can clean that up. He did a great job off of the dribble and Iowa didn't seem to have anyone who could guard him with the ball in his hands. The offense that Matty runs through Jackson much of the time was potent...and get this (but don't tell anyone)- it even had a few sets that were very effective. Painter's signature motion offense is morphing into something much more effective and much tougher to defend.

JJ had 16 points, 5 rebounds, 3 steals and 4 blocks. As Purdue continues to filter the defense toward 25, he continues to clean up the mess and intimidate. So even when he's not at his 19 points/game scoring, he's still making noise.

Barlow had 11 points and 4 rebounds, but just took the game over for a stretch in the first half. His effectiveness was limited a bit after he rolled his ankle following a steal. He continues to be pesky and annoying to opposing guards...which I love and hate at the same time. He's gotten better on both sides of the court this season, but still has some growing up to do, in my opinion. He's a work in progress that might be All-Big Ten next season...if nothing else, he'll be All-BT defensive team in '12.

TJohn had 7 points, while only missing one shot, and Carroll had 6 rebounds and was 1/1 from the field.

It was an efficient day. But, we haven't yet seen a game in which everyone, from the Big 2 to the "new" offensive threats are on at the same time. It'll happen this season, and I pity the team who is on the business end of that performance.

Following the game, Purdue's composite computer ranking is 8th. And with a losses by Kentucky and Mizzou this weekend, their human poll rankings should be nearly the same come tomorrow afternoon.

Next up, Purdue heads to their personal house of horrors, Minnesota to exact some revenge on Thursday.

I would like to point out to the naysayers who thought that Smith, Hart and Barlow were terrible scholarship recipients.
Barlow clearly has bought into Painter Defense.

Smith and Hart are scoring machines.

When Hart is back, there are MULTIPLE scoring threats - include DJ in the mix (and what about our 5'9" friend from Illinois? He's finding his pull up jumper too) - and if somebody is double-teamed (read Smooge or JJ) there are plenty of other threats.

Smith/Hart could make the difference of as many as 3 to 5 seeds in the tourney. Minnesota will be the determiner. Tubby's an excellent coach and if we can get past them, it bodes well for the rest of the season.

BTW - Indiana s*cks. Our Lady too.

Its scary to see any team with a starting 5 of LewJack, R.Smith, J.Hart, JJ, and E.Moore.

The one blessing of Hummel's injury is that these guys are seeing their offensive capability. This makes me feel comfortable for next year as well.

I'll admit it. I was one of the non-believers in Smith coming into this season, but I mean who could blame me? The kid showed VERY little in-game. Regardless, I've never been more happy to be wrong. Straight FIRE.

Travis Carroll. He is improving each game and already has the best hands between him, Bade, and Marcius. He looked much less confused and seemed to be in the right place many times with 3 ORebs. I'm really excited for the development of him.

Overall, very pleased with the conference start and let's keep it going in the Barn.

I loved when one of the announcers said today - Purdue is over-achieving right now. The media really is hesitant to give them any credit. And if they do, it is usually back-handed.

I too was hesitant that Smith would play much this season. He was a liability on defense and timid on the offensive end. I am glad I am wrong.

Hart may not be the best thing to throw in right away. This team is in a solid groove, so if it ain't broke....

I will say, however, that this team plays like a real TEAM and the defense is smothering.

The once infalliable Buckeyes look a little lucid at the moment and MSU continues to search for their identity. This Big Ten year is wild. It's time to buckle up and exorcise the ghosts of Barn years past.

This is totally unrelated, but the website has been down an awful lot in the last week. You need some new hamsters or somethin'.

After the last two days, I'd say the Michigan and Penn St wins look even better. It's nice to see this team absolutely curb-stopping the opposition. This is a real thing of beauty.

Any word on Hart's return? I know many had today's game as his return, but it looked like he still had a walking boot on....

Question for you all:

I've heard a few people speculate that this year's team defense is even better than last years. Given that we lost a couple excellent defenders, it seems almost impossible. Yet as I've watched this season unfold, I think it could be true.

Although no one can replace Kramer, it seems like we are making it even harder for teams to even get possession of the ball, much less get a good look at the basket.

Thoughts?

Ryan -- problem is we're still using Blogger... if only people would buy our shirts or become a sponsor. Then we might be able to afford a better platform. *sigh*

John -- Curious as to what others thing, but I do think they're better... and I think it might have something to do with the fact that without Kramer, the whole team feels they need to lock down and focus on defense. With Kramer, there was this feeling that, yes, we all need to play good D, BUT you have Chris Kramer locking down the other team's best player.

Just my thought.

Re: Hart
According to Painter (on his show) and a few sources on campus, Hart is practicing, but not at full-tilt. Like everybody, I heard he was going to play yesterday, so I was upset he was in the boot.

Don't think that because he's in the boot that he's not close- It's a tactic used to rest the surrounding tissue...not sure I agree with this method, but I've seen it before.

My guess is he'll see action this week in one of the games. I wouldn't look for him to be an instant impact guy though...he won't be in shape to play defense for long stretches, and Painter won't keep him in games versus teams like Minny, WVU or MSU unless he's able to play within the system

I don't know about the rest of you, but I have a bad feeling about Minny. We do not match up well against their height. I don't see a victory on Thursday, but would more than welcome being wrong on this one, as I was also wrong on Smith. I am enjoying me some crow.

I understand your concern with Minny's height...and it's never good to face a team that's underachieving as everything might "click" against our Boilers.

BUT...

Matty is especially-good at motivating his squad when he has revenge on his mind. The loss at the Barn followed by the most-embarrassing loss in the last decade during the BTT will have the boys motivated.

Also, Minny is still trying to figure out who they are with the loss of two players in their rotation. Purdue, on the other hand, really seems to know exactly what they should be doing and what's expected.

I know it borders on insanity to post this, but I think this team is a better team defense this year and we also have better individual defense without Kramer.

Don't get me wrong, Kramer was/is one hell of an on ball defender, but sometimes 2 is still greater than 1 and furthermore 3 is greater than 1.

This team has developed several superior defenders. Barlow and Jackson at this point should be 1st team all defensive Big-11. They are both at least a half step faster than Kramer was.

Kramer did a great job filling in as the 4 when Robbie went down last year, but he was outmatched at times. Byrd has a bit more size and I think is better suited for the role of undersized interior defender.

Kramer = Great. Combination of Byrd inside + Barlow/Jackson outside > Kramer.
