High Noon

If you're reading this, you probably already know that Mizzou AD has set a noon deadline for Painter to give him his final response. Many thought that Painter would be visiting Columbia today, possibly with his family, after the Missouri contingent made their final pitch to Matty in the shadows of Cinderella's castle.

Assumptions, connecting dots and emotional swings have been the norm for the staff here at BS the last few days. We're not going to tell you guys our feelings about what we think is going to happen because I don't think it does a ton of good...any good actually. But I can promise you that we're as emotionally drained as you are...and like everyone else, from West Lafayette to Columbia, we're ready for this to be over- one way or another.

I will tell you that we haven't wavered on one thing- we don't think this should have ever gone this far...and that alone pisses us off. Burke, Cordova and the trustees all waited too long to issue a public statement about their feelings & on the situation and how it was being handled. Depending on the exact date of when they found out, it was between 48 and 36 hours that they all stayed mum on this issue.

Matt Painter will address his team tomorrow, one way or another. And they'll be the second group to know his final decision...followed only by his family. That is definitely the correct way to handle something like this. For some reason, Matty didn't think the Boiled Sports staff was important enough to contact via Twitter or to call us for our opinion on our helpline...So unlike so many on the interwebnet, we have no anonymous source with true insider information.

Sleep well tonight everybody. As I said to my pal Keith, all of us should stop worrying- there's nothing we could have done to change this. Many of us invest our time, money and way too much heartache into Purdue athletics. While some that are high in Athletic Department want to lay blame for this situation at our feet, I have a difficult time hearing any of that nonsense.

I hope Matt Painter is my Alma Mater's basketball coach when Hummel, Smith and Jackson help open the renovated Mackey Arena on 11/11/11. Not much else to say.

Goodnight.

Good post. Get some rest, it'll be over soon enough, hopefully with good news on our side.

This whole situation is a bunch of BS.

If Matty leaves (or even if he doesn't), I won't be blaming him (for either leaving, or threatening to). This is all on Burke and even Cordova for their horrible management, putting Matt into this position to begin with. We had a great thing going, great momentum. And regardless whether he stays or not, it's been damaged. If you want to have a top program, you have to support that program - financially and otherwise. The facilities may now be top-notch, but that's only a part of the equation. If Matty's not getting the support he needs, then shame on the athletic department. Why bother if you're not going to get completely behind it? No sense doing it half-assed.

And that letter from the JPC was classless. I guess just exposing their hypocrisy: As one of the commenters posted on that post, I am also a 2000 grad, and 5 year basketball and football student ticket holder. I don't recall any JPC 'recruitment' of me, despite me being a prime candidate. I'm out of state, so there's not really a compelling reason to join (at least for tickets) but that's the point - they should create a compelling reason, other than tickets, for the out-of-staters. And if there is a compelling reason for us, then they're not doing a good enough job of advertising that to me, because I really have no idea what the benefits are.

I'm being critical because I love Purdue. I just want (and expect) better from the leadership.

Noon Central or Eastern time? My heart can't take this.

I think this whole deal will change Purdue athletics for the better. Matty's little dance will force the athletic department to rethink how they run things. There is a reason our revenue sports never seem to go beyond mediocrity and women's golf has national championships. There is a reason we are known for not recruiting nationally and it all comes down to where the revenue is being allocated. Looking back I think this is what Tiller tried to do but he was too brazen about it in the media so he received backlash from fans. I just think this particular situation will change the athletic department since it's Matt freakin' Painter that is threatening to leave

One thing that is kinda gnawing at me is the recruitment of Brandon Dawson. I think we all thought he was coming to Purdue and then he committed to Izzo. Losing a player to Izzo isn't a huge heartbreaker because he's a good coach with a good program. But I seem to remember there being discussion that Dawson committed to MSU in part because Izzo or an assistant traveled to Europe and watched him play extensively. And we did not. Possibly because Burke wasn't going to pay for those sorts of trips? I know that loss hurt and if Painter believes that sending Ownes or Lusk over there would have sealed the deal, I could see how that would gnaw on how Painter sees Purdue's commitment to winning basketball.

Gene Keady had some good input on the matter. It sound like it has everything to do with securing a commitment to do everything possible to create a winning atmosphere.

Keady's words, for those who haven't read them yet:

"Proactive means they gave him more money," Keady said Tuesday. "But money's not keeping him from thinking about Missouri."

"It's about having the opportunity to win a national title with the backing of everyone. He wants to know if an assistant coach needs a car, he can get it. If something needs to be done, they'll do it, so he doesn't have to worry about all the nickel and dime stuff."

"It isn't about money. I want him to stay and Morgan wants him to stay," the former Boilers coach added.

From StL Post Dispatch:

"It looks like this will be a happy day for Mizzou fans.

Not official; nothing announced.

But a source that I greatly trust tells me that Painter is in ... it's my understanding that Alden recently got the call.

Hopefully there will be an announcement relatively soon. And then you can officially celebrate.

Likely news conference later this afternoon.

Don't be surprised to see Painter at Busch Stadium Thursday to be introduced before the game."

If this happens, I have a real problem maintaining any loyalty to the Purdue Athletic Department. The university will always be close to my heart, but Morgan Burke, Nancy Cross and the rest of them can go fuck themselves.

Poop.

Well, on the bright side for Painter, not only does he get more money, he doesn't have to go out and buy a bunch of new suits and ties.

It's not over, but it doesn't look good, imo.

I don't like it that no one has heard from Painter yet...seems like he is breaking bad news to his team, personally.

Feces, I hope not.

Either way, BURKE MUST GO!!!

Anyone else like we're in the Apollo 13 movie where Houston is waiting for Tom Hanks's voice after they re-enter the atmosphere? This is excrutiating. If he's gone, I'm gonna take a few years off of Purdue fandom. Can't take much more of this. I woke up highly optimistic for some reason. Hopefully I don't get put back into my rightful place as a Purdue & Chicago Bears fan....

I love how I'm spending all day refreshing Twitter, BS, GBI. Killing my productivity, and it's not like it will change the outcome :)
