Are you excited? I know I am. It's April 15 and, aside from the excitement of tax day, it's the day the Notre Dame 2011 "The Shirt" is revealed.
Just the title "The Shirt" speaks volumes about the arrogance and self-importance associated with Notre Dame football. The idea that it's actually exciting to see which poorly-designed shirt concept was selected for this fall is also silly. But since there's not much to write about, it's always fun to make fun of Notre Dame.
Since this year's shirt isn't announced until late afternoon today (with special appearance by Brian Kelly -- OMG!!!), we'll just take a look back at some previous shirts, including our favorites...and perhaps make some suggestions for this year's slogan.
2009 -- "Rise and Strike. Defend our Honor."
Or, just get your honor violated week after week after week, while your obnoxious, arrogant coach alienates absolutely everyone and throws his own players under the bus.
2008 -- "Wake up the echoes. Notre Dame will rise again."
But not this year. We'll let you know when.
I also like that they couldn't think of too much original so they copied the '94 shirt and did "wake up the echoes" again.
2006 -- "Tradition. This is the day and you are the team."
...that will continue the decade-plus bowl victory drought.
2003 -- "Here come the Irish. There's a magic in the sound of their name."
Their name is Houdini?
Ah, but perhaps our favorite of all time was 2005:
"The Spirit Lives. If you could bottle the Notre Dame spirit, you could light up the universe."
Wow. I am still awed by horribly stupid that is. I remember us running into UND guys who were mortified by it. That slogan sounds like something one of our mothers would come up with after leaving church or something. Yay, spirit!
As for 2011, what would be a good slogan?
"Notre Dame football: Celebrating one bowl win since our freshmen were born."
"Notre Dame football: Too sexy for a conference."
"Notre Dame football: Reminiscing with IU basketball fans about the mid-to-late '80s for a quarter century."
"Notre Dame football: Remember when we mattered?"
"Notre Dame football -- It was honestly a beautiful day."
Please feel free to improve upon these.

Notre Dame Football-- sacrificing lives for a bowl win
Notre Dame Football -- Hide yo kids, hide yo wife and hide yo husbands too. We raping and killing people up in here.
You sure have a lot of anger towards a shit. Who cares? Most ND fans I know care less about the shirt than you do.
What exactly is arrogant about a yearly shirt that raises money for charity? Of course it's going to promote ND.
Also, nice job of using a student's death for some cheap laughs. You're a class act, as always. No wonder Purdue is embarrased to be associated with you, and wants nothing to do with your site.
@14thStreet - you don't really have any room at all to criticize J Money and Boilerdowd for what commenters post on this site. They didn't say anything about the student who died at ND - two users did. I read through the article 3 times just to see if they had said anything about that incident, and I found nothing.
In other news... I found it amusing how many times they followed the theme of or similar to "return to glory" in the past decade. Still waiting for that fabled return, I see.
@14thStreet Fail post is fail.
@BoilerPaulie - read it a 4th time, you missed it.
"It was honestly a beautiful day." What do you think this is in reference to?
Hey 14th street, you may want to review your facts on who exactly is acting like an embarrassment with regard to student deaths.
Hint: it's your beloved ND.
Now run along. If you don't like the content, be gone.
JMoney, there are certainly some moments when I was dissapointed with the ND administration's response to Declan Sullivan's death.
That doesn't make you any less of a douche for posting a one-liner referening the situation, just to get some cheap laughs and get a shot in at ND.
I didn't see the "beautiful day" as a reference to the death of student. I thought it was a reference to fall Saturdays, which are often beautiful until I see Notre Dame playing.
Ah it's a "beautiful day" when Notre Dame faithful have to defend their school through non-ND blogs. 14thStreet is definitely an IU basketball fan with his classy comebacks.
This is where the 2003 "magic" slogan comes from...

When will the media stop buying into it also. They are again talking about a 10 win season and return to glory. What a joke.

I wasn't aware of this and it makes me angry for Declan Sullivan and his family. They are pissing on his grave. What a shame.
Oddly enough, this site came up when I searched for The Shirt, so I will make a comment since you obviously want to be associated with Notre Dame that badly. You didn't have anything Purdue related to talk about so you decided to make fun of one of our traditions? Cool.
I do have a slogan idea, though. This year's slogan should be "Notre Dame Football: we may suck and be irrelevant but at least we'll still beat Purdue."
I mean seriously, if you're going to attack another college's football program like that make sure yours is as good or even better. Of the four slogans you made fun of, Notre Dame beat Purdue during three of those seasons. You guys aren't USC or anyone like that.
And since it’s been brought up, are you honestly going to act like the “beautiful day” comment wasn’t about Declan? It’s a blatant reference to what happened because that’s how Kelly described the weather that day. If you're going to make a classless and tasteless joke at the expense of a 20-year-old's tragic death and someone calls you out for it, own up to it. Don't try to back out of it.
If the story from that link was true, why do you think you had never heard about it until now? Nothing was doctored and Notre Dame has been mostly cooperative (I had to change this from fully cooperative, but frankly they weren't), including admitting full guilt for the incident. And why should you be angry for the family? They’ve already said that nothing will bring Declan back but they believe that Notre Dame has handled the situation well. The Sullivan family has been nothing but classy and poised throughout this entire ordeal, why can’t people who didn’t even know the family do the same? Instead, we’ve got jokers cracking jokes about his death and people out for blood going after Notre Dame.
If you’re going to rely on shady sources to form your opinion on something you clearly don’t know a lot about, then just let it go. Don’t try to act like you feel so sorry for Declan and his family. You’re just happy there’s something you can use against Notre Dame, which is apparent through your idea of a “cute slogan.”
Tradition - It's All We Have - Notre Dame Football 2011
How can it be that every time this site makes a notre dame post, trolls from every dark corner of south bend come out of the woodwork to bitch up a storm? I would have thought lowering one's self to the point of commenting on a Purdue blog would be reprehensible for the average notre dame "fan"
Perhaps for a shirt, they can have an image of someone terribly imitating Slash with the slogan "We are ennnnnn deeeee"
@Purple Reptar,
That link I posted references the official OSHA report. How is that a "shady source?"
I do feel bad for Declan and his family. He shouldn't have been up there in the first place if your coach cared more about human life than winning football games. And now they are making it worse by doctoring the video tapes and attempting a cover up. You do realize there is footage missing from the tapes? That means that ND values covering their asses more than honoring Declan. It is shitty and it is wrong whether you "have heard about it" or not.
Also, when did you graduate from Notre Dame?
The official OSHA report says:
"The film is missing from 3:38:44 pm to 3:47:43 pm."
That isn't doctored?!
Notre Dame Football - Still On TV, Somewhere
People making jokes about Sullivan's death aren't representative of this fan base or any others, as far as I'm aware. Of course it's easier for trolls to make that assumption ... if I were a Notre Dame fan, I suspect I'd rather talk about anything other than what my school apparently did before his death and during the investigation of it.
I would guess the trolls come out because it's all they've got. If they can't have a good enough season, they'll spread their vitriol on other sites, because that will make things better ... except when they leave, we'll still be talking about what we normally do, and they'll still have to deal with the reality that the Notre Dame they follow now is not the Notre Dame of the past, and evidence continues to suggest that it may never be again.
Notre Dame: Doggedly denying our irrelevance since 1997.
Notre Dame: On second thought, Gerry Faust wasn't all that bad.
Notre Dame: Regis Philbin likes us. That's cool, right?
Notre Dame football - Rudy is still our homeboy.
Notre Dame football - We had a network first, dammit.
Notre Dame football - It ain't easy bein' cheesy.
Notre Dame football - Why go to college when you can just root for one...until January.
Notre Dame football-The son of Lou Holtz
Good one! I was in God's Country during the Faust "reign".
Boiler Up!
1.) I'm not a troll. And if commenting on a Purdue fansite is all I've got, then knocking a has been football program that is STILL better than yours is apparently all you've got.
2.) I decided to comment on this blog because the slogan referring to Declan's death is classless, and if you had known the guy you wouldn't be making such dumb remarks. If I hadn't seen that last slogan, I would have just thought back on all the times we've beaten you, laughed, and moved on. And sorry if a blog that discusses Purdue sports makes a joke about something like that and I assume that you all are just as classless, especially when most of you are defending such a remark.
3.) Yes, I am aware of the fact that parts of the tape are missing. Missing and doctored aren't the same. Besides, that was released like a month ago. The shady part I am talking about is the website that is sensationalizing the story by saying that it has been doctored and that Notre Dame has purposefully edited out parts that supposedly could incriminate them. They have no basis for that claim.
4.) Notre Dame just released a statement today saying that they're all at fault for the incident. From the people working the lifts, to the decision to use the lifts, to the decision to let Declan stay up there, etc. They've taken responsibility for it, so what would they be covering up? And if OSHA really thought that ND doctored the tapes, do you think they'd let it go for a month?
5.) What's this about not honoring Declan? We just put up permanent cameras and have banned the use of lifts for filming practice. How is that not admitting a huge, horrible mistake and learning from it? I swear some of you just like to hear what you want to hear. I'm more aware of the situation than you are, trust me. Notre Dame isn't perfect (and I will never act like they are) but they are sincerely trying to make it up to Declan and his family. If something happened at Purdue or another school that I didn't know a lot about or had just hear bits from the news, I wouldn't try and act like I know more than someone who actually goes to the school. The students at Notre Dame aren't dumb; we support our school but know they screwed up big time.
6.) And his family said today that they are grateful for ND's response. However, you who didn't even know Declan nor are you a part of the Notre Dame community sit on a blog and say that they're covering things up and not honoring Declan. Again, I think ND is more worried about making up to Declan and his family than some Purdue fan who will bitch about Notre Dame regardless of what they do.
7.) Oh, and I will graduate from Notre Dame next year, thanks for asking.
1.) Type to somebody who cares.
2.) So what if it was classless? It's a rivalry. It's not like Oklahoma and Texas where genitals are cut off. We hate you. It's not that hard and it certainly doesn't take an ND degree to figure that out.
3.) Go eat a D??? I visit these boards to avoid this BS...the vulgar term not this website.
Notre Dame Football.....The best preseason football team out there.
You Purdouche fans crack me up! Please, just win one championship. ONE before talking trash. Be the best once, that's all I'm asking. We beat you guys even when we suck. I love that you think it's a rivalry, but in the words of Alec Baldwin, fire doesn't have a rivalry with kindling, lawnmowers don't have a rivalry with grass. Have fun sucking again this season. I'll be in your craptastic stadium celebrating another Irish win like I did two years ago.
