The Purdue athletic department, cunning and skillful as we know them to be, has scored another coup with the scheduling of Northern Illinois as the black and gold's first victim at the new and improved Mackey Arena.
On 11/11/11 (why we're all so hell bent on it being that date is still lost on me), the Boilermakers will open the new arena (well, technically the volleyball team will christen it a few days earlier -- makes perfect sense to Morgan Burke) against the Huskies.
Remember, this is the university that humbled Danny Hope's Boilers two years ago and led to truly professional cheering in the pressbox by those "covering" the Huskies. Well, after lecturing Boilerdowd on his tawdry pressbox behavior (we're still trying to figure out why he was talked down to by the athletic department but those stooges were apparently not), the school has done their best to find a way to get back at Northern Illinois by rubbing a win in their faces.
Hey, it was this or diving.

Diving isn't even an option; Boudia's spending this season training for the Olympics. Women's golf, now ...
I thought we were supposed to open against UCLA? Did I miss something?
there's no way you can shine this piece of turd news. is this seriously the best opponent we could come up with? a MAC team ranked 273rd best in the country?
what, was portland state or UC riverside booked?
I wonder how easy it is to get a team to come and play Washington Generals for a night?
This is horrible!! I would have rather seen Burke do something off the chain, like schedule an exhibition versus the Pacers.
MrAnon:
I'm sure our marketing department looked into booking the Washington Generals so that a good time could be had by young and old alike. What probably sunk that idea was that NCAA violations may get in the way with the team playing a "professional" opponent. Buy the ball-on-elastic gag would have been great for Robbie to pull on one of them.
Professional opponent has nothing to do with it. College teams play professionals all the time. For instance, when they go to Europe for the summer. Also, I seem to recall playing the Harlem Globetrotters ten years ago or so in exhibition...
I would love to see the pacers, with their new draft prospect jajuan johnson, come play for the opening of mackey arena....?
When is enough of these crappy decisions by the AD gonna be enough to get rid of him? We got lucky with Painter deciding to stay, the new Purdue Pete was a disaster, and now we can't even open our updated arena with a big name opponent? Come on man...
Not only will basketball have a chance to avenge football, but volleyball will be able to avenge basketball when Purdue plays VCU in the Mortar Board Classic to open the vball season. Burke doesn't let any slight go unchallenged! Can't get anything past him.
