For those who have always dreamed of chatting up Danny Hope online, you'll have your chance to netsex the perpetually optimistic coach this Wednesday.
From 4 to 5 PM at this link, you'll be able to ask Coach about the Purdue offense, defense, special teams, horseshoe skills, lunch habits, etc.
Oh, and, naturally, how important a field goal kicker with 70 yard range is for a team that has trouble getting across midfield (zing!).

You may disagree, but you guys tend to underscore the injuries Purdue had last season and blame it on coaching. True, our offense WAS very bad last year...but it's extremely rare when a teams' star running back, star wide receiver, and starting quarterback are ALL out for the year. Our defense showed immense improvement...and I think an experienced Rob Henry will make this team better in 2011.
Give Hope the 2011 season before you trash him like that. I have a short fuse with him too after the IU game last season...but let's see what a healthy team of his recruited players can do. Boiler up!
It is probably due to their super-fanboy opinions of Purdue sports.
Before we "trash him"?
What the hell are you talking about? It was a light post, to be sure, but that's far from "trashing" him.
Also, he has underperformed as a coach. That's not some unreasonable opinion. It's a fact.
I'm not going to recount everything here, but he's 9-15 with a team that has visibly lost interest and focus two years running. That's got nothing to do with injuries.
JBrunner= fail. J Money= money.
Hey guys, calm down. I love Boiled Sports, I read it every day and respect you guys. There's no need for anything like that.
I'm really just saying that Hope needs 2011 to be judged correctly. If this season fails, he should be gone.
The Indiana game was the last straw for me, injuries or no. Their About To Be Fired Coach spanked Hope. when they came out with those quick passes in the first half to take Kerrigan out of the game, and the coaching staff had NO answer, well, it was all I needed. I drove 8 hours for that game, assuming we'd at least pull that one out.
I had high Hopes (no pun intended) for Danny, but that IU game gutted my enthusiasm.
8 wins or GONE. No excuses for Ol' Danny Boy.
I agree. I expect NO LESS than 8 wins. Three games are true cupcakes (middle tenn st, rice, se miss st). There is maybe one game on the schedule you could argue is almost absolutely a loss and that's at Wisc. OSU at home should be tough but no reason they can't sneak one against them again. ND should be tough but I expect to win at home. Illinois, @ Penn st, @ Mich and Iowa at home are all tough but all very much winnable. @IU is obviously a MUST. I don't think it's too much to expect at least 8 wins with this schedule.
Justin -- You may be in line for the mantle of Most Optimistic BS Reader (currently and perpetually held by T-Mill).
Seriously, as we've said to others, we love your optimisim. However, I think your expectations might be begging to be let down...we'll get into all this more as the summer drags on and football approaches, but...
MTSU is no cupcake. Bowl team each of the past two years. Brace yourself for our beloved Boilers to be home dogs to them.
Rice is no longer the pushover we all remember from ten-plus years ago. Sure, it SHOULD be a win, but it's a road game and nothing is certain anymore.
They should be able to sneak one past OSU, eh? Wow. From your lips to god's ears I guess...
You expect to beat UND, too? I would love nothing more, but not much recently suggests that's likely to happen.
I agree Illinois is a wild card... could go either way. However, @PSU and @UM? First, Purdue simply doesn't win at Penn State. Second, they never win at UM, either, except once in the past four decades when UM was positively awful. I must say, I never understand how people come up with such assumptions/expectations when, for example, Purdue got beat at home last year by a truly terrible Michigan team (I was there -- that was awful football all around).
As for IU, we're in agreement there... that's a must win. Good season or bad, it must end with a victory for the Bucket. Otherwise, even the laziest alums will get up out of their seats and yell for Danny's ouster.
I want to also say I love that several of you aren't just hoping for 8 wins, you're DEMANDING 8 wins. I think it's great to demand better than mediocre from your football program.
All that said, I don't think he needs to win 8 to save his job. I think a bowl game -- any bowl game -- will keep him safe and secure in West Lafayette.
I like that Hope works to get his good players on the field, putting them at different positions or creating special play packages for them (Rob Henry, for example). I thought he was innovative at adapting to all the injuries and keeping the team competitive and motivated.
The team ran better than I remember it ever doing under Tiller, even when the passing game was ineffective and could be discounted.
I'm hopeful about the future.
Hail, Purdue!
Jim
Son of a bitch! I just typed a long response to your post J Money and it failed to post. Probably because I took forever or because I closed the main page. I'm was multitasking and trying to get real work done at the same time. I will try to replicate it later today. I do appreciate your response to optimistic post. I did want to clarify some things I said.
Justin -- Same thing happened to me. That response I posted was a second pass. Ugh.
Yay Blogger!
I'm glad someone out there is still optimistic for Hope and the current state of Purdue football. I think I am the unofficial driver of the fire Hope bandwagon. Colletto's first 2 years ...8-14. Hope's first two years...9-15. I'm just saying. Believe me, I HOPE (again no pun intended) I am wrong, but doubt I am. Great motivator, horrible X&O guy.
GB, I think OX has got you beat- he's been calling for Hope's head since last September.
Seriously, talk about rose colored glasses. I have a ton of opinions on the matter, but do any of them really matter? I don't see 6 wins this year. I am hoping to be proven wrong, but I just don't see it. For that matter, I could live with an ofer season if Hope had some attendance incentives tied to his contract. I know the athletic dept has to shoulder some blame here- but seeing an empty stadium just amplifies our pitifulness. Purdue should bring every Boys & Girls club, every civic organization, any warm body they can find into the stadium. At least they would make a dime on concessions and memorabilia. Either way, the football program has a lot to prove to me before they muster some excitement out of me.
