It's a very quiet time of the year here at BS and during those quiet times we like to catch up on things (like sleep, work, etc.). One of those site-related items is to check in on our site metrics, where people are coming from, etc. Sometimes that leads to us finding remarks or commentaries about us or our site that we somehow missed when we were posting in the middle of the night about hypothetical fights involving ball racks.
Sure, we're the first to admit that we're biased Purdue fans. Lifers, you might say, who see the world through Purdue-colored glasses. But to suggest we're overly optimistic? I think anyone who would say that...doesn't really know what the hell they're talking about.
So I present to you this comment, made a couple months ago on another site:
I avoid Boiled Sports at all costs, unless I’m very bored and want to read a super-fanboy opinion of Purdue sports.
I’m all for having confidence in your team even if that means partially ignoring the facts, but they always take it to far. Always.
Upon further review, it turns out this commenter is a frequent visitor of Hammer & Rails.
So, wait, wait, wait...let me back up a second. We're the "super-fanboys" with unreasonable levels of confidence in our teams?
I think I can confidentally say that Travis would be the first to admit he's far more gloriously delusional about Purdue athletics than we are. It's part of what we love about him (that and his triceps).
And to the uninformed commenter, who shall remain nameless, the only thing I'd "always take too far" would be how late I keep your sister out on our date.

That guy is going to be singing a different tune when Purdue runs the table in the B1G and wins a National Title, earning Henry the Heisman.
Too optimistic - phhht!
Can we agree that you're both too optimistic about non-Danny Hope things?
Nope, we cannot.
Look, you're entitled to have any opinion you want of us. That's what makes this country great. But we're also entitled to think those opinions are misguided.
There are many things -- even beyond Danny Hope -- that we've questioned and been down about. Maybe we haven't shared as much of it here as we could have, but hey, this is a Purdue site, so shouldn't we do our best to be positive wherever possible? To help bummed fans see what there is to still be excited about?
Point is, we know ourselves pretty well... and we know we're far from "fanboys" when it comes to Purdue. We've come down on coaches, administration, the athletic dept, the University in general, etc.
To our detriment, in fact, in terms of ever having access to anything Purdue-related again.
It all goes back to something we frequently laugh about... our thoughtful, researched, well-reasoned posts are largely ignored, while our one-off, tongue-in-cheek, smartass ones are taken as though they are completely serious.
I don't think so- we thought Purdue wouldn't win a BT title- they didn't.
We thought Purdue would end the toughest part of the schedule with two losses (they ended with 1).
We thought Purdue would make the sweet 16...best case 8- Did anyone think they'd flame out v. VCU?
Thoughts vN?
The only problem with this site is that you use sarcasm. The problem with sarcasm is two-fold:
1) It does not translate well in writing, especially on blogs.
b) 30% of the population is born without the gene that allows one to recognize sarcasm.
Evidently, said person did not read the quote from mgoblog about you boys.
you guys are fine. I enjoy your posts about all things Purdue - good, bad, or indifferent. It's gotten me through many bad days at the office. Boiler UP!
Personally, I have no issue with Boiled Sports. In fact, coming from a practically all-Purdue family, I'd probably fit in the category of optimistic-beyond-reason. This place, along with H&R, is somewhere I check every day for Purdue news during what I think we can all agree is the most boring part of the year (April-August).
I personally love the sarcastic nature of the posts here. It adds some humor to the daily Purdue news and the frequent letdowns we as fans have to read about everywhere else.
As far as being overly confident in the teams and having super fanboy opinions, I must be reading an alternate version of the site because this is the last place I would ever think of going to find content like that.
***Discalimer*** Do NOT visit BoiledSports.com if you are the 30% of the population that doesn't understand sarcasm. I like it just the way it is.
Both Boiled Sports and H&R report all things Purdue but in different ways. I enjoy them both and probably spend way too much time on them, just ask my wife.
I think you guys are pretty critical when need be and not guilty of wearing gold covered glasses.
Keep up the good work!
The only thing I would EVER change about Boiled Sports is that you not take douchebags like this guy seriously.
There's something about this little bruhaha that we outsiders aren't getting.
You guys DON'T take things too seriously, as a rule - that's what makes this blog so good, especially because you CAN'T take Purdue sports to seriously. We've all seen what that does to assclowns in Columbus, South Bend, and Ann Arbor (who is a whore).
So I'd suggest you ignore von Dipshit's Dutch antics and just be yourselves...or, as Sargent Hulka once said, "Lighten Up, Francis."
Don't go changing Boiled Sports.
I like to tell people going to Hammer & Rails is a lot like going to Class of '50 lecture hall, you're going to learn a lot, it's full of other people, and your teacher is very knowledgeable.
Boiled Sports to me though is like going to Harry's Chocolate Shop. It's small, kind of dark and cramped, people are cracking wise, Boilerdowd and Jmoney are pouring out the tough spirits, and the vague smell of beer and popcorn lingers with you.
Holy crap, bugman- you just made me blush...and I think you're right on.
Thanks to everyone for the commentary/opinion. I hope none of you got the idea that we were thinking about changing the site due to someone's or multiple people's opinions. A few of you know me (us), and Plang knows us pretty well- I think he'd agree that this site is a pretty fair representation of us...at least if you read us often. And just like the site, not everyone likes me...I'm OK with that.
I will say that taken out of context, or just reading one of our posts might possibly rub some people the wrong way. That's alright too...it happens.
Thanks to you guys who visit here regularly- I'm actually very humbled when I hear someone tell me that they look to us regularly for Purdue perspective.
Also, understand...I wasn't taking this clown seriously. We get a lot of criticism, much of it biting. But this one was so out there, I just had to share.
And I was bored.
I imagine the majority of us that visit the site, 'get it' and the rest, well, whatever... last I checked this was your guys' site (and despite the amount of work you put it) it's not what pays the bills. Those comments are like the negative reviews on Amazon for a product, only the people who have something negative to say are going to say something.
Plang, as an English teacher who just taught Swift's "A Modest Proposal" I'd guess that it is more likely 50% of the population that doesn't have that particular gene...
Solid, bugmanjon!
ATL, I'm glad you 'get it'...but you don't have to rub it in our faces. I guess I'm glad you didn't tell us how often you 'get it'.
My word verification is "spork".
I get so much meaty goodness from BS, I have to use a spork to ingest all of it.
Ouch- TMILL COF 1950. I find H&R far more interesting than any lecture I ever had in that building.
Quit being so sarcastic and get to blogging. These are the doldrums for college sport fans- a time when we rely on you the most. Make us laugh (football?) Make us cry (football?) Make us dream (MJB retires?)
Either way, I fault DowdyDowd and J Money for being so damn- ahem- handsome.
Ben, on that count: Guilty as charged.
Product Review: I love this blog! Keep up the good work.
word verification - hooked.
hell yeah I'm hooked.
has that Pike guy announced yet? no one really thinks he's commiting to Purdue, right? if this site were overly optimistic there would have been a write up about why he is going to choose Purdue but I think I missed that one.
Pike picked Auburn.
If you happen upon this comment prior to the handsome hour- if you could just plug Cristiano Ronaldo in honor of Travis T Mills- any hour during the show- I'd be forever indebted to your handsomeness.
Oh yeah, its Wednesday- to handsome hour or not to handsome hour, that is the question. I've seen no affirmation yet that handsome hour is prepared to grace us this evening. Please- there are enough disappointments in the week- do not disgrace us with your lackness this Wednesday.
Ben- They've already said that the last Handsome Hour was the season finale.
Dammit! How else to spend a Wednesday evening dreaming of successful Purdue sports? Dammit.
