Tuesday Gumbo
JJ and Smooge spoke with the press together outside of Boston about playing together again and looking ahead to next season. There were a few interesting tidbits I took from the presser.
-Since the Celtics have more retired numbers than any team in the league, the former #25 & #33 don't have a ton of options for next season.
-JJ will be number 12 to honor his Mom who wore that number in high school.
-Moore will sport 55...as he used to be a fan of Jason Williams a few years ago. But a few people on the message board think it's more because he was #22 in HS and #33 in college (add 'em up, Einstein).
-The two didn't have any tryouts together prior to the draft in spite of both making multiple stops at common teams.
JJ will learn under the capable, but aging (he's 35), Kevin Garnett...and Moore will will have to fight and scratch and claw his way onto the roster...but we all know what he's capable of. And in my opinion, he's always reminded me of Ben Gordon who surprised a few people a few years ago by making noise for the Bulls early in his career.
Keady Court Revamp
Back when I was at Purdue in the mid/late 90s, I had a chance to play on Mackey's hardwood a few times...and I was simply amazed at how many deadspots the old wood surface had. A few years later, the athletic department replaced the wood and gave the court a new paint job...a few years after that, it was re-named Keady Court.
Due to the sheer pounding college courts take, they need to be replaced every 10 or 15 years, so a change was imminent. But, hard rain and on-going construction have combined to form a destructive force that sped up the replacement calendar for Keady Court.
Looking Ahead
This summer has gone pretty slowly (from a sports standpoint). The Indy Car season, paltry recruiting morsels and classic games on different networks can only tide us over so long...so in the coming weeks we'll take a look at Hope's squad...what to look forward to, what has us concerned and what flat-out scares us to death.
Stay tuned.
This will go on the shelf with
E'Twaun Moore,
JaJuan Johnson,
Keady Court to be replaced,
Mackey Arena renovation,
NBA

I could do without the different color of the area that is within the 3-point arc, but not in the lane. Let's just keep a natural wood color everywhere except in the lane. We shall paint that area and we can call that area "the paint".
Other than that it is acceptable. The P should stay a reasonable size. Some of the recent courts have logos in the middle that are way too big.
Remember when they started putting basketballs in the free throw line circles? That was kind of dumb.
It's all natural wood...slightly darker stain.
As long as they get rid of that dang train in the middle of the floor, I will be happy. I really hope they just stick with the P.
Boilergal I agree! I hate that ridiculous little train. Get it off the uniforms too. The slant block P is classic.
I also dig the shaded three point arc, and the black out of bounds...
I love summer, but summer sports are brutal - sheesh.
slant block, eh?
Gordon didn't surprise anyone. He was the 3rd overall pick in the draft.
"this just in"
Molock pulled his verbal commit.
Dozer- I hate that thing so much that I refuse to buy any piece of merchandise that has the train on it. Only the slant P for me!
I also hope that the B1G doesn't force Purdue to use that horrible baby blue color in the logo!
I was hoping that court design was an official release from the athletic department when I first saw it. Simple, clean, looks good. Agree with dumping the train (too busy) and trying to avoid a gigantic center court disaster (Kansas comes immediately to mind).
bjh- thanks...I always tend to lean toward simplicity and tradition when it comes to uniforms, court designs and the trappings around sports.
I'm in accord with everybody about the train- never been a big fan of it...and from a design standpoint, it's kind of a mess. That said, from far away it is effective...and I do like it more than the previous trains as it conveys motion and power.
I was trying to pay homage to the old all-natural mackey with white lines like it had when it opened...then the awful gold on natural from the 70s/80s with the second tone of stain...then the modern era with the black sideline...I've contacted the Athletic Department before about helping design uniforms, courts, event logos, etc...and have only been allowed to be part of a project on one occasion...still like to tinker with this stuff. If any of you guys give a bunch of money, put in the good word for me w/ Mr. Burke.
FYI - I believe it's called "motion P" officially, rather than slant block P.
And I've also heard that E'Twaun picking 55 makes a lot of sense as motivation for him to prove himself to the world, being picked 55th in the draft.
BoilerPaulie is right. E'Twaun picked #55 for the reason he stated above. I heard it myself in a radio interview. E'Twaun never said a word about Jason Williams, and really, that reason just sounds stupid.
Correct on the first part, wrong on the second:
"Growing up, I used to wear 55. I used to like Jason Williams -- White Chocolate -- I used to like the way he passed, so I used to wear 55, too, when I was younger."
Whether you think it's dumb or not, you might wanna take that up with Smooge.
