Being a Purdue Fan

The recent debate (on Twitter and elsewhere) about whether or not Purdue fans can pull off the Black and Gold color scheme plan for the Notre Dame game on October 1 has made me think, once again, about what it means to be a Purdue fan. Yes, many schools, teams, etc., think they are unique, but here’s why I actually think Purdue fans are.

There's a reason it's hard to imagine Purdue fans color-coding the entire stadium and wearing the shirts they're told to wear. It's because the typical Purdue fan seems to be a 60 year old wearing an old sweatshirt ("Purdue Mom!" "Purdue Dad!") who graduated from Purdue in the '70s. Or he might be an old man in an argyle sweater, or a 1980s style baseball cap with the flat brim and the hat high.

It's never been TRENDY to be a Purdue fan. People don't leap on board because it's an easy team to root for. Not a lot of people back Purdue and claim to have been a fan "forever." Even fewer say, "Oh, uh, I grew up in Indiana so I'm a big Purdue fan," the way people do who grew up in Texas, Florida, Tennessee, Georgia, etc. The people who are Purdue fans are the people who actually went to Purdue. The people who know what it's like to be there and experience how great a place it is.

The sycophants living 50 miles from Columbus who have their truck painted “scarlet” (OOOOH, scarlet! It makes me feel so naughty when I wear scarlet!) and a picture of Jim Tressel over their mantle and who never went to college, let alone OSU, will never comprehend it. (Of course, they won’t comprehend the alphabet, either, but that’s neither here nor there.)  Cheering for a school like it’s a pro team because you, uh, lived near it, is so far from the same as being a fan who LIVED IT that it’s hardly worth explaining.

Purdue fans are people who spend years on campus. They ate at the campus grills. They had beers at Harry’s. They went to Breakfast Club. They ran through the fountain. They remember the Good Earth Market. They know that the windiest place in the Midwest is under the Math building in February. They’ve been to, or have friends who’ve been to, mass at St. Tom’s. They’ve lost their voice in Mackey. They’ve walked what feels like ten miles – uphill – to get to a football game. They’ve gotten sunburned and frost-bitten at Ross-Ade in the same season. They have driven around blocks for 45 minutes waiting for a parking spot to open up. They’ve enjoyed the “Drew Brees” or the “Duane Purvis” at Triple XXX. They know Triple XXX is spelled just that way, even though that’s kind of redundant. They’ve almost been run over in the Chauncey parking lot. They’ve mumbled to themselves about the irony of some of the engineering decisions on the campus of a school known for engineering. They know what “on the hill, but on the level” means. They’re aware of Purdue’s proud astronaut history. They’ve rubbed Abe’s nose for luck in the Union. They beam with pride whenever they hear a mention of Sully Sullenberger. They’ve attended or participated in the Nude Olympics. They know who Rube Goldberg is. They know the history of the tables with names and details carved into them in the Knight Spot Grill under Cary. They have, or know people who have, their names on an engraved plate nailed to a door in one of the dorms – and they know why those plates are there. They remember when the top floors of Cary weren’t considered a fire hazard. They know nobody at Purdue gets their number retired. They know it’s just called the “Co-Rec.” They’ve played pickup games at the Co-Rec instead of studying. They know where the “hello walk” is. They remember someone riding a unicycle to class when they went to Purdue. They know the significance of The Fumble. They know what “lofts” refer to in the dorms. They know how to assemble a loft. They know the mascot is the Special, not Pete. They never, ever forget the athletes who clearly LOVED representing Purdue. They’ve studied in the “stacks” and heard the legendary sex rumors. They got hit in the head with a plastic cup after a score while sitting in the student section. They went to a party at halftime. They’ve been awakened by the AAMB thundering past their dorm. They’ve been on a run out to Lafayette and been stuck at a train crossing for what feels like the whole night. They’ve been awakened on the first Saturday of a month to the test blast of the tornado siren and for a second freaked that they needed to take cover. They remember that the area between Owen and Cary – now a massive mess hall – used to be a field referred to by many as the “DMZ.” They called Hillenbrandt “the Hilton” when it was new and scoffed at how soft the people were who lived there. They remember the dry “nightclub” at Purdue West. They remember “Kazoos.” They remember Alfano’s stuffed breadsticks. They’ve walked to the levee to play basketball under the lights. And that’s just a few things that make Boilermakers….Boilermakers.

But do you know what being a Purdue fan pretty much never requires you to do? Apologize. Or make justifications for a hero coach who cheated and covered up rule-breaking. I’d like to sit here and be all high and mighty and say that if a Purdue coach broke the rules and was fired and embarrassed the program and the University that I would blast them and never support them again…but I can’t do that. And do you know why? Because Purdue coaches don't do that. I'm not in a position where my alma mater wins all the time and does so at all costs. And that's fine with me. And, I suspect, fine with all of us.

So if you’re a hater, you can go on bashing Purdue or calling us boring or mocking whatever it is about us that strikes your fancy. Because we know why it’s a source of great pride to be a Boilermaker and, frankly, we’re glad you don’t.

Purdue has risen before. And will rise again.

Choo-choo, muthas.

To your call once more we rally,
Alma Mater, hear our praise;
Where the Wabash spreads its valley,
Filled with joy our voices raise.
From the skies in swelling echoes
Come the cheers that tell the tale,
Of your vict'ries and your heroes,
Hail Purdue! We sing all hail!

Great writeup J.

Worthless trivia - I was one of the original employees at Good Earth Market when it opened.

Fantastic post. Makes me pretty disappointed I spent *only* 5 years there, and don't get to go back this fall.

hey, I lived at Hillenbrand and was far from soft. That's the advantage of living on the only guy's floor in the girl's wing.

This should be blown and pur somewhere on campus, and T-Mill HIllenbrand is Co-ed floors now so it's even more of a plus.

Hey!! I lived in Hillenbrand as a freshman the first year it opened. It wasn't soft- we had to eat elsewhere as our cafeteria wasn't ready... ok, it was soft. The suite was nice!

BTW- did anyone hear the lions roar?

I'll be sitting in section 105, which is assigned gold and will be doing my part along with making sure the other 7 with me do theirs. If the domers shirts this year really are navy, it may work out well enough. That doesn't mean that I won't have any of the oldtimers telling me to pipe it down in the highroller section!

While I'm regrettably defecting from the family tradition of going to Purdue (I'm the sister of the famed "kellyarogers" on Twitter) and attending Duke in the fall, I cannot tell you how much I love this post. I've quite literally grown up with Purdue (going to every home football game for the past seven years, tailgating until the D lot is completely empty, driving the hour or so to Mackey on a school night just to be a part of the atmosphere rather than watch it on BTN) and fought til my face turned purple with anger while defending "my" team.

I may not spend the next four years at Purdue, but I'll always consider them my home team. And you better believe if we're going down this year in football, I'm going down right there with them.

Boilermakers also know what happens to couples who kiss under the Bell Tower and walk by the Lion's Fountain...

Those stuffed breadsticks were so good. Had them as a freshman. Place closed soon after that. Reading this makes me want to get on a plane, rent a car, drive up river road and see gods country again.

Never lived in the dorms, stayed in L-town with friends so I can't speak to the dorm grills. (I'm a towny to, from the L-town area).

Mock me for being a towny, but I had 25 years of Purdue, not just 4 or 5. You should be jealous. I went to football games w/ my Dad when I was 7, watch Colletto and Akers teams, went to Mackey with my Grandma (who retired from Purdue) for a ton of home games from prob '84-on up through the 00's, etc. I grew up going to Triple XXX on Sundays and spent my winters sledding on Slayter.

I left L-town at 18, joined the military and was gone forever. But, it hit me, I had to go back and earn my degree just as my family had. I came back, began my 4 years in WL at just the right time (2000).

I may be a towny, but my entire family is related to that campus in one way or another, and all of us have Purdue degree's hanging on our walls.

Oh, and I bet some of you don't know what the "Gem" was, or what TA Toms was or where Pete's used to be.

What's great is that the guy who is in the photo for "some 60 year old" is a guy that parks at my place for football games, he's a ton of fun and not like normal cranky alums.

I went to school with BDown and JMoney, and I even lived in W.Laf. for 6 years when I was younger while my dad was a prof at the school. I know everything J is talking about and more. The only thing that has stumped it in all of this is BoilerUpAT's "Gem" statement. Something is rumbling around in the back of my head about it, but I can't put a figure on it. BDowd probably knows it.

And I got a crappy sweatshirt from TA Toms for drinking all 50 beers in one year.

Oh, and things missed:

Von's! Gotta mention Von's.
Garcia's flying pizza after midnight.
Getting lost in the bowels of the Biology building.
Beepers.
Bruno's.
Lafayette Brewery.

When you choose to ridicule OSU fans who didn't go to college instead of fans who wear their Notre Dame gear until the seasons change and it's time to put on the Hoosier basketball gear but didn't go to either, it makes me wonder where your priorities are.

As for "Purdue coaches don't do that". Of course they do. They just haven't been caught yet. Did you not read the "Living Large" stories? Bruce Weber was effectively Glen Robinson's bag man.

Be proud of Purdue, but don't act like being Boilers makes us better than other people. That's the biggest problem I have with Notre Dame fans.

Pride goeth before a fall.

Don't forget The Stabilizer. The dirtiest, smelliest, hands-down greatest college bar ever.

Great post. Go Boilers.

The Gem was a little shack/store that used to be in the gravel parking lot on University St. across from the Armory. Now, LWSN Lawson Computer Science Building is there.

Plang said...

Now I remember Gem. There used to be a lot of those little places that have completely slipped my mind.

Guess I'm turning into one of those "old" Purdue fans.

How could you forget to mention the smoke stack? As a freshmen, I woke up in the drunk tank in Lafayette. I had no idea where I was but saw the smoke stack off in the distance. I knew I just had to walk toward it to get back to campus. I know the bell tower looks nicer, but I have a soft spot for the ole smoke stack.

Penny Beer night at Pete's on Weds.,
Crock and rock at the Cactus on Thurs. with a little Sister Christian, Cactus again on Friday night for shits, giggles, and 25 cent Buds, Breakfast Club and game Saturdays, good ole keg of honey brown on Saturday nights. Mix a little TA Toms, Harry's, Jakes and you got a nice little week going.

Paul -- Gem was the Good Earth Market...I mentioned it.

Kelly's sis -- hard to pass up a Duke education. Appreciate your love for Purdue and your family's.

TMill -- being the only daffodil among all those Roses doesn't make you tough.

BoilerUpAT -- thanks for your service.

Blr1426 -- so something a blog alleges from 20 years ago is what you're comparing to the O$U situation? You're entitled, but that's a stretch.

Lots of great comments here and yes, of course there were things I didn't mention....as you all know, this is just a sampling.

The Smokestack...Lore has it, according to my indoctrination, that there was one band for every virgin that graduated from Purdue. I did count them once when I was a Freshman, but must have destroyed too many brain cells since then. I do remember it wasn't a very high number :)

I don't know if you all remember, but I was a friend of Mookie's...played ball with Dowd and J Money a few times.

Anyhow, what epitomizes a Purdue fan? Loving your school even when we have verbal commitments that bail on us. When we're ranked #3 in the nation, and it's obvious that's an underranking...only to see our season snap away in one knee. A Purdue fans sits back down in disbelief that a won football game was fumbled away with ESPN Gameday present. To have the most Big Ten championships, but no NCAA championship...

Need I go on...ours is a tragic life full of pain and sorrow.

I hope D. Willis becomes a Boiler, but it's not looking good. Such is the way of life for those who love our Old Gold and Black.

Simply pointing out that even our own institution is likely capable of bending the occasional NCAA regulation.

Did I miss Grand Prix Week comments? Or is the list of memories limited to locations?

Very nice post J - you made my day as I look back to the what campus used to be and still is to some degree. Seems like every summer, there are more buildings going up over there. If I didn't live here to see the changes, I probably would have a hard time recognizing the south end of campus. Progress is a good thing though and will hopefully continue to keep Purdue at the forefront as a place to get a great education.
