How do we welcome our target of the week? BY PREDICTING THEIR DEMISE.
Predicto Starts....Right now!
THuff:
Southeast Missouri can't defend against the run and they showed this against Southern Illinois two weeks ago. If the line can get the blocks up front, expect Shavers and Bolden to lay some pipe on the little guys. With the return of the Gunslinger Marve and TerBush getting his swag up, we'll have two respectable throwers at the helm.
The most exciting possibility is letting Marve throw the money ball and let TerBush pick up some quick slants and easy throws to establish his name. This will give the defense a confusion factor not knowing to predict a run from the back, a pass, or for TerBush to crab walk off stage left into the endzone.
They are the team we need. So we will chase them, because they can take it, hard.
Purdue wins, 38 to 14.
Tim:
My prediction? Two American university football squads will play a less than exciting match of American footyball.
The University of Purdue will win the match by scoring 9 wickets and 3 legs.
The Missouri University of the South East will lose after only scoring 2 bowlers.

Tim is, as usual, in his happy place, I see.
Well, this is the one true "gimme" on the schedule, which while it should be fun to know your team really has a likely win ahead, is actually sort of saddening because there used to be at least a small handful of gimmes on the schedule each year, even during the dark '90s days.
Is it possible Purdue could lose to SEMO? Sure it is. FCS schools have risen up and taken down FBS schools multiple times in recent weeks. And for those claiming that SEMO is actually not very good for the FCS, well, two things: 1) How much FCS football do you really watch? And 2) Purdue isn't a good FBS team so hey, who knows? Let's drink some FRS and dispense with the BS and get back to arguing over the BCS while we watch our FBS beat their FCS.
If Purdue loses, I would say that Danny Hope will need a police escort back to his car but, really, Coach Hope could probably handle the few fans that will actually be there. I would love to see Marve get in there and shred this school...because a quarterback at Purdue should be able to do just that.
However, my prediciton is that Purdue wins the game but doesn't do anything in the process to make us feel better about where things are heading.

Two by air, Two by land...
I think we have no reason to believe our Boilers will struggle v. SEMO...even in the wake of the struggle we witnessed in Houston.
Will Bolden have a big day? Yes.
Will Shavers have a big day? Yes.
Will TerBush play well? Yes.
Will Marve show a bit of what he's capable of? Yes.
I don't think it should matter who's playing in the skilled positions, Purdue should physically-overwhelm the Redhawks. They were good last year (for an FCS school), but have lost a lot and are trying to figure out who they are as they have players playing new positions and coordinators switching around as well.
Purdue will be bigger, Purdue will be stronger, Purdue will win BIG. Look for the speed guys to do big things...even in special teams. Let's have some fun this week, whadayasay?

It looks as if Purdue needs to avoid sticky wickets and Slugworth. And I agree with J - if our Boilers lose the game, Danny Hope better get out of Dodge while he can. But why worry - SEMO Community College may hang tough for a quarter or two, but they will eventually wilt to the big uglies of Purdue's lines. Purdue by two scores - I'm just not saying which type of scores.
I follow enough I-AA football to have a decent idea of who's good and who's not ... and even so, there are some changes from year to year. Southeast Missouri actually won the Ohio Valley Conference last year; they got whipped by Eastern Washington from the Big Sky, to which I said "wtf?", before I saw that that was actually national champion Eastern Washington. (Typically it would be Montana coming out of the conference.)
EWU had a relatively easy time through the playoffs, playing only one of the top four seeds (Delaware in the final), but they did win, so it's possible that SEMO just had bad luck and was thus a really good I-AA team last year.
Howeva, there are the usual caveats about measuring I-A vs. I-AA, last year vs. this year, and the unpredictability of a single game and all that. So maybe they'll be good this year too (hint to Burke: when looking for a patsy, aim at the bottom of the standings, not the top), or maybe not.
I think this will be exactly what we're expecting at this point. Purdue will be sluggish, Southeast Missouri will give them a battle for a while, and eventually, Big Ten players will wear down OVC players. It will be a W, there will be questions ... and we'll have two more weeks until we find out if Purdue can generate turnovers against Notre Dame like everyone and their Big East brothers can.

Southeast Missouri 22 (late TD + 2)
I think SEMO will take the opening kickoff, have their offense drive to field goal range in 6 plays and kick a FG looking like theyre going to make the day interesting, then everyone will snap out of their sweet malaise and realize that's unacceptable as we bowl them over the rest of the day.
I think the only thing stopping Purdue from 200yds rushing will be the final whistle.

@Scruffy P
The only thing that will stop Purdue from rushing for 200 yds is the coaching staff's love of bubble screens.
I really cannot see these coaches calling a game that will blow anyone out. Even though these are d2 players, if there coach is even slightly competent he will burn us over the middle like every other team. I think that they put up 300 yards on us. That being said, I also think that our offense will actually be able to put up points against there smaller defense. My prediction, Boilers 35 - SEMO 24.
Remember when we used to see Duke lose to d2 schools and laugh, thinking we would never have to worry about that. Well those days are over.
not DII, I-AA (or to use the NCAA's term, FCS). You're going down one level too far. DII teams are the ones I-AA teams schedule early in the season.
With that correction, though, your point is well-made. Duke struggled against Richmond in the past because they're very similar to Purdue's current state; as much as we'd like to see the Boilers in a class above the Blue Devils (in all sports), that's just not the case right now.
The Boilers will jump out to a predictable but enjoyable 24-3 halftime lead. At halftime, SEMO will make adjustments. Hope and Co. will do whatever they do at halftime. In the second half, SEMO come out inspired and makes this embarrassingly close. A late Boiler score will hide the truth, but we'll all know it was an underwhelming win.

Remember Appalachian State? That was supposed to be a gimmee for the Wolverines. As much as I'd like to see Danny Hope become a color commentator for the Big Ten Network like RichRod, this is one that should give Hope a bit more experience, though it's not Big Ten caliber experience. Work on field position and clock management, Danny.... Purdue 27, SEMO 13.
I'll tell you what ... I don't like some of the playcalling so far (inside the 10, I'd prefer more running against a I-AA team, and kicking on fourth and 2 is a sign of weakness here), but the defense is making that all irrelevant, and TerBush is 13 of 15, so for the first 18 minutes at least, this is playing out exactly as it's supposed to. Kudos to the Boilers for bringing the hammer down on the visitors so far.
FCS, highschool team, whatever! It's just fun watching my Boilers drop 50+ on another school!
84% through the air, nearly 400 yards on the ground ... they've done exactly what you'd want to see against a lower-division school. I'm glad I was wrong. For one week, at least, this looks like the type of team we'd hoped to see this season.
