Another Look at Nike's (not Purdue's) New Train

If you break down the old motion train, from a visual standpoint, there's room for revision. The perspective doesn't line up well, and there are some issues in the mark that make it kind of tough to love.  But, I've always, at least, liked it.

I've worked on the licensing side of the business with Purdue...and understand a bit of what Nike's problem with the old train was. It's not a balanced shape, so it's tough to center on hats and shirts and its sharp tail makes it hard to fit onto sleeves and things of that nature. So, I get why Nike would want a revised logo.  I also understand that if the athletic department has to pay $0 for a revised logo, they'll probably jump at that.

But, the new train that Nike is forcing upon Purdue fans leaves a lot to be desired. It's designed kind of lazy in that it's not only balanced, but completely symmetrical (the smoke specifically).  But, much worse, the smoke seems to form a very veiny phallic shape...which is nothing but negative, from my perspective...and if it's not a joke being played on Purdue, it's laziness, once again, that let it by.

I'm a person that hates criticism without a solution being offered...so simply, here is my quick solution- Change the smoke and add the motion P to the front, and I think Nike might have a winner.  As of this morning, in the BTN poll, over 80% of the fans who looked at the new mark disapproved of it...
Here's my solution:

Darken the gold to match Old Gold and I like it a lot more

Huh, so that's what effort looks like...

MUCH BETTER.

The block P is definitely a good idea - not sure why Nike dropped that, other than that they break everything they touch.

I'm not sure I like the smoke, even in your revision. In the old logo, it was clear that there was smoke coming from the smokestack; in the new logo, the smoke isn't trailing back the way I would expect.

Another thing, and I realize this is well beyond what you can easily change, is that we seem to be looking at the train from a point even closer to the ground. That, plus the head-on angle, takes a lot of detail away from the train, and I don't like it. I'd be interested to see the train rotated down toward us (imagine that you cup the back of the train in your hand and move your hand toward your forearm). Maybe from that angle, the smoke could be made to trail back more clearly. (I do agree that the penis-shaped smoke has to go.)

I still like the detail on the old logo better, though. I'd have to see more examples to be able to give a better idea of what I want - basically, I've become the typical client.

What Jenny said. Still not a huge fan of it over what we already have, but it's many times better than Nike's half-attempt for sure. It could grow on me though. I do love trains...

Nike took off the motion P because they have a hard-on for symmetry

I suppose that the crescent shape is supposed to be the underside of the nose, but to me it looks like a mouth and that the stupid thing is grinning.

I think another artist needs to start over from scratch. I don't like this thing.

It's better than it was, I am still not a huge fan. But that is definitely much better than the old one... now if Nike would just look. And I agree, darken the gold back to Old Gold and not some off Gold and that would help too!

Please send your idea to Nike. About time someone listens.
