Marve Suffers Another ACL Injury

Robert Marve simply cannot catch a break. The sixth-year senior suffered additional damage to his surgically-repaired left knee in the loss to Notre Dame on Saturday.

Danny Hope confirmed on this radio show that Marve had additional damage to the knee but that the full extent of the damage is unknown. Hope also said the MRI showed a "potential tear," according to ESPN's Big Ten blog.

I'm not sure what a potential tear is, but it's hard to imagine Marve playing college football again. It would seem more likely to me that the coach is, no pun intended, just hoping against hope.

This would be the third significant knee injury for Marve and, as I said, would likely signal the end of his time as a football player. Much of the attention will likely focus on what this means to the Purdue football team in 2012 but we find ourselves simply feeling terrible for the guy, much the way we felt worse for Rob Hummel than the Purdue basketball program after he tore his knee for the second time in October 2010. It's a horrible thing to have to go through once, frankly, and Marve may be facing it for the third time.

I'm sure a million jokes will spring forth from other sites and wiseguy commenters in the coming days and weeks about Purdue's seemingly cursed history with ACLs, but right now we can't find very much to joke about in this.

We wish Robert "Marve-lous" Marve nothing but the best and will have more for you as it develops.

Horrible news for a kid that was due to catch a break. Wish him the best.

I think the universe is trying to tell him something. He should probably listen. It ain't worth a permanent limp.

Can TerBush get us to 8-4?

I hope that surgery can fix it so that he can walk normally, and I hope that he's been able to put some time at Purdue into what he was planning to do after football ... because it may be time to focus on that part of his life.

Marve did his best for the team and the school, and I wish him the best for his future.

Poop.

Purdue loses a QB, but Hope says they've been preparing for this all fall. Utah lost their starting QB as well over the weekend for good (shoulder). Not a good time to be a QB for any of the teams I follow.

Hope Marve takes a little time to reflect and think about the future. Not the way any of us would like it to end.

I wish Marve the best and I wish Purdue would NEVER recruit another kid who had pre-existing knee problems for QB. The QB position at Purdue is too important to recruit kids who aren't already healthy. I think of that Drew Brees like kid who we could have given a scholarship to instead of Marve... Go ahead and hate on me for saying it.

From GBI:

"The TerBush-Henry combination is more of what Hope has envisioned with his two-quarterback system than what the Boilermakers have done of late in simply rotating TerBush and Marve."

Coach Hope: "Where we're at in the evolution of that right now and two weeks from now and four weeks from now and at the end of the season is yet to be determined."

Evolution? Yet to be determined? Uhm, isn't that what the offseason is for? Hope's team is always a "work in progress" during the season. Progressing toward what?

I promised myself I wouldn't complain about the coaching this season, but it's getting tough.

CalTravelGuy - Funny you mention that Drew Brees like kid we may have missed on... as the real Drew Brees had a preexisting knee problem. Many speculate that is why he ended up Purdue instead of a "more prestigious" football program because they doubted his recovery.

Find out why college is so important at any age.
