Sooooo...
I've always disliked the "SHOUT" tradition prior to the fourth quarter at football games. It's clearly a watered-down rip-off of Wisconsin's great tradition, "Jump Around." Many have surmised that I think that way because Purdue was out of so many games by the time the third quarter came around...but my disdain for this song goes back to its inception.
-Now, do I think it's a bad idea to have a song that gets fans into the game for the final quarter? Absolutely not. It'll still be a rip-off of Wisconsin, but Wisconsin has it right- it's raucous at Camp Randall when that song plays. It HAS NEVER been raucous at RA during "SHOUT" because the song is a fun song for people like my Mom to enjoy...nice sentiment. BUT, fans like Mama Boilerdowd (never used that one) aren't the ones that make Ross-Ade tough for opponents.
-Should we throw the baby out with the bathwater?
No way, I like babies...and throwing a tub full of bathwater would probably cause me to go into spasms. I really like guys like Neil Armstrong, Drew Brees, Robbie Hummel, David Boudia, Gene Keady, etc. sticking their heads out of the box and getting involved; that's a great thing. The announcer was the thing that got me excited more than that damned song.
-Is now the time to move on?
Hells yes it is! Very few Purdue football fans have a good taste in their mouth about the Danny Hope Era. I believe the idea of "SHOUT" was an effort to try to invigorate a weary fanbase. In 2006 it began...Basketball on grass was a memory, the autumn of Joe Tiller's time at Purdue was upon us and the product on the field had slipped. Sure, the offense would still bludgeon bad teams, but during big games versus ranked teams, Purdue wasn't giving fans much to cheer for.
That tradition continued (with the exception of games v. aOSU, for some reason) during Hope's tenure...
New coach, new era...time to move forward.
Here are some of the songs that I think would be better than "SHOUT!" during the break between third and fourth quarter:
Kinda easy.
Better than "SHOUT!"...encourages people to get up...
Colors are close...love the song; not perfect though. Still better than "SHOUT!"
Hey, it mentions one of Purdue's colors often...it's catchy and people like my Mom might like it.
Used to be played during pre-game of Purdue games back when the teams kicked ass...is a good breaking stuff song.
Have video of big hits at the same time...it's tongue in cheek, I think works well...
This one revolves around Purdue's primary color...probably not quite "up" enough...
Probably the best song ever...no other reason for it on this list really.
Good one to go along with the new name of Ross-Ade (which I don't like much; but it's done)...
Same as above...more white of a song, but less white than "SHOUT!"
To me, this is the best song...cheesy? sure! Fun? youbetcha! Fitting? Absolutely.

Okay, not the live version, but I couldn't help but use this one with the big haired groupies and ozzy looking like an aged character out of rocky horror picture show. This would seriously terrify any opposing fans though. Maybe he's looking for work.
Or:

I mean come on, it's white enough for the old folks, old enough of a song that it's not going to become passe, and let's face it, it rocks.
Like the latter; good call...but really really dislike Ozzy Osborne; that wasn't an oversight, but an intentional omission.
Right, but imagine Ozzy, dressed just like that, coming down from the top row of the visitors section, screaming lyrics at opposing fans through the whole first verse. He then spends the chorus and the vast majority of the second verse biting the head off the other teams mascot and rubbing sweat and makeup all over the opposing chearleaders, runs down the sideline and spends the guitar bridge being body surfed up the student section and finishes the song at the top of the stadium, where he is then airlifted by helicopter from the top row.
Seriously. That has fourth quarter magic written all over it.
I've always wanted to see this one in Mackey:

Just seems like a good fit somewhere.
I'm with you on Quad City DJs. That would be perfect. It's fun, it has the right tempo, and it involves a train. What could be better? The only question is if it's really old enough. It might be too old to be cool, but not old enough to make a comeback.
The James Brown track would be good too. Back in Black is would be good, but it's a little too slow.
Just please not Powerman 5000. That crap is an affront to anyone with ears. There is no such thing as an appropriate time to play something so dreadful.
Someone could put Boiler lyrics to 'We didnt start the Fire' by Billy Joel. But again thats really white.
And speaking of furnace, how long until we hear 'Hot in Here'?
Love the "Hot in Herrrrrrre" idea to go along with "The Furnace"...still don't like the Furnace though.
I'll make sure to pass on all of these fine, fine ideas to the athletic club when I make my $5 donation to the John Purdue club...
In all seriousness, most of these are much better than Shout, but our athletic department is very much like the Catholic Church - very slow to change.
For the Danny Hope Era:
"The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" - Gordon Lightfoot
If we ever hired Nevin Shapiro - "The Lap Dance Is Always Better When the Stripper's Cryin'" - Bloodhound Gang
TMill - Game, set, match. well played, sir.
ride the train would be great, shout has never made much sense to me.
I'd be a fan of the Rolling Stones. Would love to see all the fans point at the opposing bench yelling "HEY, YOU, GET OFF OF MY CLOUD".

This would be the perfect song if they only said "Boiler It Up".

my vote is for "Party Train" by the Gap Band! Everybody all aboard the Part Train...
Her is the video to Party Train for all you young guys...

I really like hearing that Powerman song. Even if it isnt that great of a song, it makes me feel like we are going to go out and pound someone, like we used to.
Remember the one year with Orton when the beginning of the game they all turned into superheros? That was awesome.
Come on ride the train would be good. I think the only good thing about shout is that it has hand motions, so people would at least know what to do.
I'd go with Thunderstruck. Not really connected to trains, furnaces, or anything else Purdue, but still awesome. You could have the song on the speakers and highlights of Purdue players past and present blowing up opposing players with big hits on the jumbotron. And when they mention Texas in the song, you could show a different highlight of Brees each week just to remind everyone how freaking awesome he is. Just my 2 cents.
Huge Rage fan here, "Sleep Now in the Fire" would be pure awesome. There would be a mosh pit in the stands every game which is just what we need to bring some energy back to this crowd.
What about "Enter Sandman" by Metallica.

I know Va Tech uses this as their hype song for their intros. But what if we used it for strictly our 4th quarter hype song.
I rarely if ever post on here but this article has me fired up. I am completely on board getting rid of the shout song. I am fully on board ripping off Wisconsin, but can we please get a different song. I would say we put out a list of songs and let the students vote on it. It get's them involved and makes them feel like they own it. After all, it's them we want to fire up. We would just need to control the list, otherwise they would vote in a song off of NWA Straight out of Compton. While we are ripping off stuff, I vote we also rip off Virginia Tech and Iowa and have a song that the team comes out to. I know Auburn comes out to Boom by POD because of the "here comes the boys from the South". Wouldn't work for Purdue because only Minny thinks Purdue is south. I personally like a song that gets the heart pumping like you want to smash something. My vote would be for Saliva Your Disease

Can we start a petetion or something? I doubt half the people in the athletic department know what a blog is much less read any!
I never understood the Shout 'tradition' either. I like the black keys... but RA doesn't have a ceiling... so maybe let's save it for basketball? My vote is probably for weezer or c'mon n ride the train. I think cmon ride it is cheesy and fun, which is probably what we should be going for...
Powerman 5000 should be brought back before the games... that really made me want to hit something and I wasn't even padded up. Even the old peeps in the great seats got into it, at least the games that I was using the 50-yard lines tix.
Shout- SUCKS. I like Back in Black or Thunderstruck. I also don't think it matters what type of music you like, its what type of music would strike the correct mood. None of the above is what I would prefer to listen to at any other time, but given the game situation seem like they would work.
Why not "Paint it Black" by the Rolling Stones?
You know, I love my fellow Purdue alums, but almost all of these choices drive me nuts!
My suggestion (which will be ignored) is : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5TtvlzOOW9A
The lyrics are awesome and the energy is great. The only thing it doesnt have is a Purdue-esque reference.
If not Fall Goliath, please God in heaven not Quad City DJs. I beg you.
We have one of the greatest marching bands in the world. We should be hearing more from them throughout the gameday ... between 3rd and 4th, between plays, during breaks ... *not* listening to mass-produced recorded music and watching video on the jumbotron (or, most embarrassing of all, watching the band do jumping-jacks to a recorded tune during the pre-game entry of the team onto the field @ RA). If we're going to follow other schools, in this respect we should look to the band culture and rituals @ ND, USC, OSU ... there are still a small number of respects in which they remember how to show a bit of class, and we should too.
@boxercr, I'm a fan of Project 86, so I won't ignore your suggestion. But, I do agree with what Boilergal said above:
"I also don't think it matters what type of music you like, its what type of music would strike the correct mood."
SO, I think my choices would be Powerman 5000, Thunderstruck (had that in Mackey for the pregame while I was a student, worked out pretty well), or Fall Goliath. Not necessarily in that order.
And, as a former member of the AAMB, let me just say that it's good to have band traditions as well, but if you really want to get the crowd into it, go with the jumbotron.
Good lyrics on that Project 86 song...but if you're going to go with that style, do it all the way and cue up some Gwar.
(that was sarcasm)
Since everybody's throwing out ideas...

Love the quad city dj song. I used to play it at parties all the time and people would get really into it. Only problem is that it is very clearly a euphemism for sex. I really don't have a problem with "shout." I think the students have really adopted it, too, since every time it is played at a party or at the bars everyone goes crazy.
Thunderstruck gets my vote.
I know this is slightly off the subject, but speaking of traditions, while I think SHOUT! is wimpy and very Chicago Cubs-like (kiss of death), there was a very short lived tradition back in the early Tiller days of shooting off a cannon after a Touchdown. I don't think it lasted a full year, and then it mysteriously disappeared. The rumor I heard at the time was that some bed-wetters complained the practice was too militaristic.
To me, that's a GREAT reason to bring it back. It was fun, it was LOUD, and it pissed off morons like that.
"One Big Mob" by Red Hot Chili Peppers http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vpMI8A2PSaM
Just cut out the middle third (the slow part) of the song.
You need to get a song that the student section can sing and interact with. You can't have slow points in the song, as drunk students lose interest quickly... a classic college drinking song (and a song older people are familiar with) like Thunderstuck would be perfect. I can just imagine the Furnace getting crazy right now...
There's also the Rangers goal song, but its a bit too short for 4th quarter timeouts... however, effective and roudy

Take the clip from Avengers where Thor says "You want me to put the Hammer Down?!" .... and intro that into something like Thunderstruck...

I haven't posted here before, but read and follow the forums everyday. Im an 06 grad and have been going to games since the age 2, and still have season tickets. I don't like the shout either. I want something crazy that gets people rowdy. I would love some dubstep style thrown in somewhere, but I love the song "Game on" by Disciple.
Check it out!
