2K Sports Classic: Preview and Prediction of SuperNOVA

If you read my preseason post, you know that I predicted this could be a game that the Boilers lose.  Not because I'm buying into ESPN's Big East is better than all forever mentality, but because Painter teams tend to struggle on neutral courts, not to mention the Boilers are one of the youngest teams in basketball.

Here is what Nova brings to the table, other than the ESPN east coast attitude.

They have a great freshman guard in Ryan Arcidiacona. Arcidiacona has more to hope for than just a chance at the strangest name in college basketball this season.  He is averaging 18 points and 5 assists this season.  It does seem as though he might have trouble with turning over the ball... sound familiar?

Arcidiacona will be a good match-up for the Boilermakers.  His youth might get the best of him, but if not contained he could drop a load on the Boilers. [Uhhh, do what, now? -Ed.]

James Bell is another guy that could give the Boilers some trouble.  Bell is a taller guard at 6-6, not quite Kelsey Barlow lanky, but this guy can shoot the rock.  This season he is averaging 14 points per game and is shooting 43 percent from the field.

Bell's size could cause some issues for Purdue with the lack of size at the guard position, but Terone or Byrd should be able to contain him.

If you take a glance at their roster on ESPN, they are freakishly similar to our team right now -- young and in rebuilding mode.

The weakest part about this squad has to be the big men. During their last game they played JayVaughn Pinkston at forward along with Mouphatao Yarou and Maurice Sutton at the center spot. These guys are not huge by any means. In fact, dare I say it, Purdue might actually have the size advantage in this game. Shocker, I know.

Sutton is the one I'm most concerned about in this one.  He is a senior with plenty of experience.  Being a role player his first three years, he's now expected to jump up and provide some very productive scoring.

This team is a squad that is going to grow each game, very similar to Purdue, they are still searching for an identity and are hoping to find it in the Big Apple.

I have to believe this is going to be a very close game.  It's time to see what the freshman can really do in crunch time.  It will be their first chance to really play on the national stage.  Also this will be the first chance for some of you who haven't been to Mackey to see these guys play.

I think Purdue wins this game.  It will be close throughout, but if the Boilermakers can finally get in a rhythm they will pull this one out.  I'm not sure if Byrd will be as productive as he is expected to be yet, but I think the game will depend on him and Terone.

Purdue v. Oregon Predicto

Chip Kelly leads the Ducks in their '09 home opener

First off, we've heard from a few people that the podcast had some issues with buffering- this time, the tech problems aren't user error, but instead were due to blog talk radio's speed problems. I'm not sure what can be done about it, but we'll look into trying to make it better.

Also, our pal who's out on the island of Iowa wrote us a note following the podcast asking if the kick coverage game might come into play v. Oregon. I think the answer has to be yes, if the kick coverage team looks as they did versus Toledo. One positive about last week's coverage teams, they were getting down the field quickly, so the speed of the coverage wasn't the issue. But, the spacing was very bad at times and the tackling woes that reared their ugly head on defense also showed time and time again on special teams. Oregon's kick returner is currently 29th in the nation per kick return, but he didn't get a ton of action last week in the offensive explosion versus Boise...Thurmon isn't the fastest guy in the world, but he's smart and has been around a while as he's a Senior DB. If he gets space, he'll take advantage of it.

Alright, now to this week's picks:

Tim Says:
Purdue's strong secondary should put a damper on the Ducks deep game, but the inexperienced linebackers may be exploited time and time again over the middle for 8-15 yards at a time.

I think Purdue will be able to rush the ball, and I expect Taylor and Bolden to total over 200 yards combined again. They'll be needed, as I expect Elliott and the receivers to have a difficult time getting open looks.

Oregon seems somewhat susceptible on special teams. Purdue needs to take advantage of that and routinely put the ball near the 30 to start drives.

The overall inexperience of the team, combined with playing on the road will hinder Purdue. That said, Purdue has a chance to win the game, just not a large chance. I give them about a 15% shot to pull this game out.

J says:
If the Boilers come out of the gate, punch Oregon in the mouth and the defense holds them down in the first half, I like our chances. However, if Oregon looks to be feeling it early and takes a first quarter lead -- especially if quickly -- then it's going to be a very long night for the Boilermakers.

Winning this game is possible for Purdue. For the first time in a while, I have some optimism for Purdue going into tough road destinations. Maybe it's because the Hope era feels like a fresh start in that respect as well. However, while a win is possible, it's not likely. As long as the Boilers compete, don't quit and don't look overwhelmed, I'll be proud of them. But I think it's really asking too much to predict a win for the Boilers at this stage.

boilerdowd says:
While I'm not confident that our Boilers will win this game, I haven't lost any sleep over it. What I mean is I'm not particularly worried yet simply because most are expecting a loss at this point. Purdue's a double-digit road dog against a team that should probably be ranked- none of those factors are favorable, especially when you look at the last few years. And granted, this isn't the same coaching staff, but a lot of the players are the same. Who knows how much of the old mentality is still in the system.

I look for Purdue to hang tough for much of the game, but I believe Oregon will blow it open in the end. As many of Purdue's players are wishing for their beds back home, Oregon's comfort in the Pacific Time Zone will be obvious. I look for Oregon's Senior tight end to have a couple back-breaking first downs toward the end of the game as Purdue continues to struggle with the underneath routes. The score might not tell how competitive Purdue is in this game...but I'm pretty sure a no-nonsense guy like Hope doesn't care too much for moral victories.

I think Kerrigan and Neal will have "louder" games...and if Purdue can control the trenches, I think Purdue wins. That said, experience wins out and speed kills.

Oregon 38
Purdue 21

I've said it before, I'll say it again- there's nothing more fun than watching your alma mater win a game that you don't expect them to win...here's a real opportunity for a very fun night, as none of us are expecting too much.

To your call once more we rally, Alma Mater, hear our praise;
Where the Wabash spreads its valley, Filled with joy our voices raise.
From the skies in swelling echoes Come the cheers that tell the tale,
Of your vict'ries and your heroes, Hail Purdue! We sing all hail!

Hail, hail to old Purdue! All hail to our old gold and black!
Hail, hail to old Purdue! Our friendship may she never lack,
Ever grateful ever true, Thus we raise our song anew,
Of the days we've spent with you, All hail our own Purdue.

Big Time Teams Play Big Time Opponents (Bethune-Cookman)

As Purdue starts its season (for some reason it's about 3-5 days after everyone else in the nation) they will be tested right away by the fantastic stupendous Bethune-Cookman Wildcats. Granted, I thought BC actually was conjured up by Bill Cosby as a rival to Hillman on the Cosby show, but it turns out the Wildcats are a real MEAC school. Bethune-Cookman comes in 0-2 after losing to two perennial powers, Warner Southern & Florida Gulf Coast. Both games were close, so don't discount the effort...This B-Cookman team can flat out play!

While other teams across the land will be playing in unimportant tournaments like the BCI or Pre-Season NIT, Purdue will be playing back-to-back contests against some of the best teams in American- Bethune Cookman & Lipscomb. We should learn a whole lot of nothin' over the next two contest.

What we will see is a host of Freshman playing for the Boilermakers. Purdue will start three freshman in tonight's contest...This is something that has never happened according to Gold & Black online...so starting four, which will happen very soon will be history-making once again.

Calasan is still out awaiting the NCAA's ruling on his amateur status...This process wasn't aided by a fire in the NCAA headquarters yesterday in Indianapolis. The building will be shut down for at least another day...and Purdue will not have their JC shooting forward as long as they aren't working. Crapper, Miles, get back to work!
