Nothing Sticks to the Smart Ones

It took the feds a long time to actually get something to stick to John Gotti. Like all big time gangsters, the guy knew the law and knew how to dodge the big rap. But, eventually, a life of breaking the law caught up with him and he ended up in prison.

Are we seeing the same thing at Kentucky as things seem to be closing in on Teflon John Calipari?

Truthfully, I doubt it...Calipari is smart-enough to clean his dirty laundry through channels of people who don't seem to even know whom they're working for. But, the story surrounding Eric Bledsoe has more layers than an onion and its stench is much stronger.

This one's got a bit of everything- academic impropriety, money exchanging hands, people hiding things so investigators can't get information and tons of denials and important parts giving the silent treatment...it's a bushel basket of rules, if not laws, being broken by quite a few people...and the whole mess leads back to the guy who does no wrong, Kentucky's current coach.

Perhaps this story will be what sends Cal to the NBA once again as he and Bron Bron finally make their love for eachother public.

I think the regular readers here know how much of a fan I am of John Calipari and the University of Kentucky for hiring this pillar of the NCAA coaching community. So, of course, I'm as shocked as you are when I hear that Calipari's crown jewel of the incoming Wildcat class might not be eligible this season.

We have all come to recognize AAU basketball as a place where snakes lie in the grass and use talented young players as the chips that get them rich and powerful...so none of this is surprising in the slightest. But, if Kentucky fans don't like the SEC and the NCAA sniffing around for answers, they had better decide now not to root for UK now- it's not going to get any better.

Be at peace though, friends in royal blue, the NCAA will probably continue its long history of doing little-to-nothing to the cash cow programs of the Title IX machine.

Winning at Any Cost: University of Kentucky Basketball

The University of Kentucky, its alums, its administration and its athletic department are sick and tired of losing. They ran Tubby out of town because 20+ wins/year wasn't suitable...They hired Gillespie because of his success at T A&M...but he wasn't able to win quick enough...So they made their deal.

They went out and purchased a winning program in the form of a coach who, like the UK family, doesn't care about how they get there, but just wants more championships. Today, we saw the next phase of this as the Wildcats' recruiting class became complete as John Wall signed on to play for Coach Cal.

So, here's UK's incoming class (according to Rivals):
Four (4) Five-Star players Two (2) Four-Star players

A total of six blue chip players...The #1, #2, #22, #23 & #40-ranked players in one group of six incoming freshman to one school...who's in a state of transition. The last time a class like this was assembled was in Ann Arbor a few years back. Worldwide Wes, Coach Cal & Mitch Barnhart (who was probably feeling the heat) have come together to create a can't-miss championship program in a matter of mere months.

But, if you were Kentucky, wouldn't you be willing to win at any cost too? The NCAA refuses to make significant punishments to the fuel of the Title IX machine...and the Wildcats will be no different when, not if, this house of cards tumbles downward.

Congrats, UK alums...You're getting what you wanted.
