It Could Have Been Worse...Much Worse

By now, you've probably all seen the new Keady Court graphics. In my opinion, they're very well done. J thinks the concept is sneakingly-familiar to ours from last week, but I think good design is good design and similarities happen in the design world quite often.

The new concept gets rid of the Special in center court, which is a positive. It puts focus on Keady by placing his signature on the court and doesn't genuflect at the altar of the B1G too much (it gives the right amount of respect to the conference, in my opinion).

There are a few people complaining about the change at center court and the overall design on the Purdue Athletics page on Facebook...but you won't hear any of that on this site. The Athletic Department got this one right, in our opinion as we were never huge fans of the train at center court and always like things that lean toward classic and simple.

With all of the poor decisions and near mistakes made over the last few years by the Purdue marketing family, this is a victory...and they needed one.
Coulda been worse.

2011 Black/Gold Game Review

I woke up this morning to 40 degree temps, rain and ugly skies...and it got worse as we headed out of the Indy era with stormy conditions dominating the horizon. But the radar looked promising around God's country, so my brother, nephew, son and I headed North. By the time we hit Lebanon, the rain had stopped, by the time we got to Tippecanoe County, the sun was breaking through and the ground was dry...and at kickoff for the game, it was probably the best spring game weather I can remember- I actually got a sunburn (on one side of my dome). Here's what I saw:

-Rob Henry looks stronger and more filled-out physically. He continues to have a command of the huddle and I perceive that he gets respect from the team in the huddle. He threw a couple nice balls with zip, but the pass game didn't have a ton of rhythm...but neither did the running game. Hope tried to make this into a game, but it's still a glorified practice. Purdue misses Bolden services greatly, and the splitting up of the running backs makes for an odd rhythm of substitutions. The most effective runner, like last season, was Henry. He's very elusive, seems slightly quicker and a bit more fluid in his running style. Since QBs were down by any touch of the defense, it's pretty tough to see how this offense will work.

-Caleb TerBush looked OK, but neither he nor Henry threw a particularly long ball. Both fluttered the ball on some fade routes. They also both held onto the ball too long as plays broke down and neither had that two-three second clock in their head as the DBs did an excellent job time and time again covering up the receivers. Both QBs wore gloves on their throwing hands.

We got to see other QBs, all walk-ons (not sure why Robinson was unavailable), but McCarthy made his first appearance as a Boiler. He didn't throw the ball great, but has a big body that could add weight...I'd like to see him moved to WR and become a Siller/Smith type of guy...especially if Purdue can get a good QB (Pike?) in the coming recruiting class.

-Ricardo Allen had a couple pass interference calls very early, but the safeties and corners (as they should) anchored the defense. Allen, Johnson, Link, Evans, Charlot, Eargle, Williams, Aristide and others are a fast, talented and experienced bunch.

-Kawaan Short and Bruce Gaston are a great tandem and their names were announced a lot today- they're both big, strong and ugly- I like that. They need help at DE though. Maci's name was called a few times, as was Mebane and Russell's. By the looks of him, I'd guess Russell will play a lot and Mebane still needs to fill out a bit.

-Out of the talented LB corps, it seemed to me that Higgs was the most active on the day. That said, I still want him moved to DE and am still not sure why that hasn't already happened. He's a nasty player and is needed up front. Greaves and Lee both made some plays at LB, but the usual in the middle were quiet.

-Josh Johnson fielded punts and did so quietly. Antavian Edison was noticed, for the wrong reason. Cody Webster simply blasted a punt early in the day and Edison tried to catch to catch the spiral above his head- after an ill-advised back-peddling fair catch attempt, the ball flew threw his hands. Edison did his best to get back to square one, but couldn't get back to where he had botched the catch.

-Edison runs fluidly and is super-quick. I liked what I saw from him and hope he gets even more opportunities to touch the ball in the fall. With the potential thin and young RB corps, he will most-surely be used at RB (he wasn't on Saturday). Siller and Torwodzu are both physical specimens- large, strong and both seem to have good hands. That's great news because TWood's knock out of HS was that his hands weren't consistent. Normando Harris had a couple catches and looked comfortable on the offensive side of the ball (remember, he played Safety late in the season in '10). OJ Ross wasn't given too many opportunities, but looks quick again.

I like the receiving corps a lot...but I'm not super-confident in the quarterbacks' being able to get the ball to them.

The tight ends were pretty quiet, but Sinz, Holmes and Carter (JC transfer) all had catches.

-The offensive play-calling was pretty boring and for me, and the game was really just a chance to get to learn some new numbers/names. So the most-exciting thing two watch was the exhibition Wiggs put on at the end of the half blasting kicks from 45 all the way up to nearly 70 yards all in a row...all but one split the uprights. His leg has a ton of 'pop' in it.

-These games are funny- I can remember back in the late-90s as I watched Bergler or Edgerton shine as that Brees guy just kind of got by, I began to devalue what I saw. That said, I love going to these.

Beauty Contest
One thing that's always neat is to see what players have re-shaped themselves physically. Here are a few that just looked like football players.
-Torwudzu- if he can catch in traffic like he did today, he could become a very good possession
receiver because he looks like he'll be able to block out about anybody.
-Ricardo Allen is sculpted. He kinda reminds me of the way Bob Sanders was put together in highschool- very compact and like Sanders he's got some swagger...and it's well-earned and backed up.
-RB Senior, Sean Matti played a lot late in the game. His running style is choppy and he probably won't play next season, but he's put together like a football player.
-I already mentioned Henry, but I think he's made a similar jump (physically) as he did between his Frosh and RS Frosh this last off-season. That's a good sign for his work ethic.

New Coke...errrr...Pete
The new Pete was publicly shown off and here's what I think: he looks worse in person than he did via photos. His goofy stuffed animal shoes make him look like Mickey Mouse. I always liked Pete wearing black Nikes with a white swoosh as if he might suit up and play for the team. His physique isn't tough-looking and his costume just isn't right. The shiny silver helmet doesn't seem to be shaped like a hard hat and his matching giant belt buckle (like he's about to go to the Neon Cactus) doesn't fit. Plus, he looks like he stole his pants from the lady's department at JC Penney. Whereas the old Pete might have looked intimidating and menacing, the new one looks as if he was born chromosomally-deficient.

If you don't like what you've seen of the re-design, let Teri Thompson know...after a few days of backlash, Thompson and Co. have been performing damage control saying that this Pete will be changed and what we saw was only a prototype. In my opinion, what is seen in the fall needs to be a complete departure from this piece of laughable crap.

Ugh...New Pete revealed (then hidden)

The new Pete was revealed via a half-assed grainy video on Thursday. But after significant push-back via the interwebnet, the revised, and newly-neutered Pete images and corresponding video had vanished. Well, in case you missed it, here you go (thanks cminat02, via Twitter):

Rumors of a curse?

I hear rumors and whispers that Purdue is now cursed! People are telling me that ever since Burke announced Purdue Pete would be changed, things haven't been going well for Purdue athletics. Here are my thoughts.

Curses, to me are merely the excuses of losers. All kidding aside- I lived in Boston a few years before they made their amazing comeback from three games down...back then, the Sox faithful loved their misery and reveled in whining about why and how they lose. Cubs fans are the same- being a lovable loser has become their identity. More times than not, the Red Sox have limited post-season success because they're in the Yankees division...and the Yanks win at all costs. Similarly, the Cubs don't win pennants because the Cardinals own them and the division. Shockingly, success, or lack there of, has little to do with goats, a traded pitcher or a mascot change. Similarly, schools that make winning a priority (get this), win games.

The argument that Purdue can't win because of proximity to aOSU, UND and Michigan is asinine. TCU wins in Texas because they have an AD that made winning a priority over a decade ago and have had two coaches that have been creative in their recruiting. Atop that, the university has backed the program fully giving them the tools they request to win. Iowa was a doormat for decades, but Frye took a big step forward with the help of a good AD and Ferentz has helped the Hawkeyes take the mythological, if not ethereal "next step". Remember, Iowa has always had to recruit against Nebraska. Heck, even look at Northwestern...bad facilities, high academic standards, close proximity to one of college football's historical giants...and instead of dwelling of the on-going effects (and potential "curse") of Wheeler & Walker's deaths, they're simply succeeding.
One thing Joe Tiller did very well early in his years in West Lafayette is he thought differently and approached problems from a new angle. Can't run v. the mosters of the BT? Short passes, hot routes and bubble screens. Can't get the recruits from the Midwest? Go after guys in Texas who aren't coveted by the big boys. Danny Hope's attempting to do the same down in talent-laden Florida...I think it's a good tactic.
Burke has decided to focus on fixing something that's not broken (Pete)...and makes sure to run the athletic department like a business by perpetually focusing on the bottom line. I'm not saying it's a bad thing to keep the bottom line in mind...it's a very good thing, no doubt. But to me, it seems the focus should be on winning, and doing it the right way. He refuses to pursue the highest-caliber, most-qualified coaches, and instead settles for inexpensive options with heavy Purdue ties. Matt Painter has turned out to be a brilliant hire. But, remember, Matty only had one year of head coaching under his belt when hired to God's country. He's already lost assistants because his budget is too low...and worse yet, he has an out clause in his contract after this season that might allow him to leave town...all because Purdue and its athletic department's focus doing things on the cheap.

Hope was an inexpensive option with moderate success at his previous job...but had Purdue ties. He's currently the second-lowest paid coach in the BT...and more than that, his staff is extremely-low paid. Worse yet, many of them coach like it. Whether or not Hope was the perfect fit for the job at this point, matters little. What does matter, is he needs all tools at his disposal to be successful.

So is there a curse? Perhaps...but it's not caused by the sports gods smiting our Boilers...This one is self-inflicted. It's definitely not caused by Pete's imminent exit...but instead, Purdue athletics will be cursed as long as this entity continues to think small time and has a fanbase that does the same. I think you break sports curses pretty simply- if something isn't working, try something new.

But, keeping with tradition simply because that's the way things are done is a disease that Purdue's athletic department has been infected with with for decades. It's everywhere- from crappy fans who get angry at those who have the audacity to cheer and stand at games (gasp!!), to alums and ticket holders that accept .500 (or worse) records as a bi-product of us simply being who we are...to coaches and administrators that focus on Purdue's limitations instead of trying to do things creatively and differently than their competition.

The culture must change in order for the real curse to be lifted.

Face of the Program

On ESPN.com, they've decided to ask everyone who the face of their school's athletic program is. Now, while Purdue takes a lot of crap for not being a powerhouse, there are probably far worse situations out there. (For example, would you like to figure out the "face of the program" for, say, SMU?)

Anyway, the Purdue discussion board for the Face of the Program chatter is....apathetic. Thirteen posts in three weeks.

So I'm going to rattle off some candidates as the face of Purdue Athletics. It's kind of a dumb contest (though not as dumb as "Who's Now" or "The Greatest Highlight [Ruined By A Fat Slovenly Windbag]") since most schools don't have a Woody Hayes or a Joe Paterno. But hey, it's May, football season isn't for more than three months, so what the hell?

Away we go, in no particular order.

Candidate: Drew Brees, QB, '98-2000
Why He Qualifies: Took Boilermakers to only their second Rose Bowl ever. Is most fondly remembered Purdue football player ever. Wasn't afraid of any team, ever.

Candidate: Joe Tiller, Head Coach, 1997-2008
Why He Qualifies: Took Purdue out of the doldrums and made program respectable again, peaking with 2000 season Rose Bowl.

Candidate: Mike Alstott, FB, '93-'96
Why He Qualifies: All-time greatest rusher at Purdue, was a force even though team was terrible. Probably second most beloved Boiler ever, behind Brees.

Candidate: Purdue Pete, Mascot, Forever
Why He Qualifies: Even casual fans recognize him; strong chin; can beat up your mascot.

Candidate: Bob Griese, QB, '63-'66 (also baseball pitcher and basketball guard)
Why He Qualifies: Led Purdue to first Rose Bowl appearance; two-time All-American; funny name.

Candidate: Leroy Keyes, RB, '65-'68
Why He Qualifies: Two-time All-American; Probably greatest running back in Purdue history; goofy picture cannot be beaten.

Candidate: Brock Spack, Defensive Coordinator, 1997-Present
Why He Qualifies: Defense was in top 3 in Big Ten -- including conference-best in 2002 -- from 2000-2004; Confused look is priceless and frequent; mustache is soup strainer quality.

Candidate: Jim Colletto, Head Coach, 1991-1996
Why He Qualifies: He doesn't, really. But he has a face. Okay, well, he recruited Mike Alstott, Billy Dicken and many other members of Purdue's first bowl team (1997) since 1984.

Candidate: Stu Schweigert, Safety, 2000-2003
Why He Qualifies: "If Stu didn't stop you, he didn't want to."

Candidate: Rick Trefzger, QB, 1993-1996
Why He Qualifies: Lefty; almost beat ND in 1996; Did upset #9 Michigan in 1996.

Candidate: Rod Woodson, DB, '83-'86
Why He Qualifies: Broad shoulders; chiseled features; dominating DB

Candidate: Len Dawson, QB, '53-'56
Why He Qualifies: One of the first of the "Cradle of Quarterbacks"; ageless like Dick Clark.

Candidate: Chris Jim Everett, QB, '82-'85
Why He Qualifies: Laser Rocket Arm; Beat up Jim Rome (sort of).

Candidate: Glenn Robinson, Forward, '91-'94
Why He Qualifies: Best Boilermaker basketball player since John Wooden; took Boilers to Elite Eight despite Gene Keady's coaching; beat Fab Five in Michigan, making Gene Keady skip for joy.

Candidate: Gene Keady, Head Coach, '81-'05
Why He Qualifies: Possibly most recognizable Boiler-related sports figure out there; the famous combover.

Candidate: Rowdy, Mascot, '97-'07
Why He Qualifies: Far less imposing than Pete; bounced on his head sometimes.

Okay, well those are just some suggestions. Did I miss any? Who would you vote for?
