Purdue's Next Football Coach?

It's no longer a rumor, this story has legs. The wheels are in motion for Joe Tiller to be replaced by this man:
Paul Chryst.

The story broke at 11:30 am Saturday after a ton of speculation that the coaching situation at Purdue would be addressed before LOI day in early February.

Burke denied that Chryst would be part of a succession plan that involved he and Tiller later Saturday afternoon. That tells me that Tiller may have already chosen not to return and will not break Fat Jack's record as the winningest coach in Purdue history.

Here's what I think: First, bravo, Morgan Burke, for a couple reasons. It looks like Spack is not going to be the guy...he did not earn the right to be the guy since his defenses simply haven't performed in the last four seasons. Second, he obviously cast a wide net and didn't limit the interviewing process to within the Purdue family...intern, he's looking for the best fit, not just the most convenient fit for the job!

Great job, Mr. Burke! More to come soon (I expect an announcement in the next week, if not in the next two days).

Addendum: This story has been confirmed by another source.

I took a peek at the site to see if there was anything about the basketball game (ugly - almost as bad as the announcers), and I find this. I would be VERY surprised if Burke decided to do his own thing and not consult Tiller.

Don't know much about Chryst - but Wisco is a solid program.

Stay tuned...I think this is a very, very positive development.

If this is true, this is almost. .flattering. I say that because he just turned down a job with the Cowboys but wants to come here. Anyway, as far as Tiller, I think he'll be mad for a while but in the end he'll decide to stay and get the all-time wins record and get the field named after him just before the IU game this year.

Wow I wasn't expecting this...

Don't know anything about this guy other than what's in the article, but at this point anybody other than Spack seems great to me.

Did you guys catch the Tiller loyalists that posted comments to Kubat's post? The first one was "StoptheBloggers08" - congratulations on having haters of your own now!

I'm going to get working on T-shirts saying "Disciples of Chryst."

That is indeed a money idea. Sign me up for one!

More tomorrow when I can process this. it looks like my basketball entry will be moved...

In case you haven't seen it, here's a video report of what's going on in W. Laf...Lots of theorizing and conjecture, but there's some good info in here too:

I believe an announcement must be made in the next two days...this is much more than a rumor at this point and might become detrimental to the program if what is coming isn't made clear very soon.

Frankly, I can't wait until Chryst leads us against Notre Dame.

will PU still run the spread?

boilerdowd said...

bp, I don't know...I think he'll run some spread because they had some spread formations at OSU...but I'm told Wisconsin fans don't want to see any offense besides something extremely traditional.

back in august, Chryst was labeled the top head coaching prospect in this Espn profile... that's pretty flattering... and the numbers also lead me to believe that he's not as traditional as you might think. I think his creativity in turning Beckum from TE to WR is a great omen for a PU offense which has looked boring in the last 3 years. Too bad he couldn't have done the same with D Keller.

i dont have insider, but the link is still useful...

Alright, who put that last entry on Chryst's wikiepedia page??

Let me just throw this out there...

Lafayette is NOTHING like Madison. This guy was born and bred a Badger. He obviously loves Madison enough that he stayed there instead of taking the NFL money.

IF he coaches at Purdue, I can't see him staying there long term. The next time the Wisco job comes open, I bet his name pops up as a candidate. You know, the old "keeping it in the Wisconsin family" argument. When will that be and would he go? Who knows.

Thoughts?

Bp,

You have it backwards. Beckum was switched from WR to TE.

Purdue Matt said...

Actually, Beckum was moved from OLB to WR to TE.

And why would you say, "Too bad he couldn't have done the same with D Keller."

Keller was a great TE for us. Why would you want him to switch positions?

Anonymous said...

Oh, i'm sorry. I thought he was a WR after I saw him in the slot almost everytime I saw Wisconsin play. He is listed as a TE.

I guess you could be right about DK if you consider his numbers. But I think if you have an athletic pass catching tight end, you split him out like the Chargers do with Antonio Gates and he can be even more effective. It would have been nice to see him gain over 100 yards in a game more than 3 times as our best player on offense.

Really the point I want to make is that it sounds like Chryst isn't limited to sticking a player in a box (which you might tend to think because of Wisconsin's past styles). But it sounds like he's creative enough to change things up and throw some new wrinkles in.

Make more sense?

Nate- word is that Wisconsin fans aren't happy with PC right now...and if he opens it up at Purdue like he did at OSU, they won't want him anytime soon.

That said, I think Bilema is going to be there a long time. He'll at least be there as long as Alvarez is there...that should be a while. Plus, they're a pretty forgiving fanbase once you've won a Rose Bowl. I think Bilema will do so in the next few seasons.

does everyone honestly think Tiller doesn't deserve to call it quits on his own terms!! I mean really all he has done is take the team to 10 post-season games in 11 years!!!! does everybody forget what it was like when he wasn't the coach? South Carolina would kill for that kind of performance.

boilerdowd said...

South Carolina what now?

I think most here believe he deserves to not be fired...Doing what Purdue did this year with as many Seniors is pretty horrible. Last year wasn't good either and '05 he completely lost control. Some might argue that he deserves to be fired due to the last three seasons...I don't, but I kind of understand the perspective.

It sounds like Chryst and members of Tiller's staff are having meetings in California this week; I believe a succession plan will be announced after the meetings are completed away from Indiana media...Perhaps Wednesday?

I think Tiller can plan his own retirement to a degree. He really is to the point that I wouldn't want Burke to fire him. I think he deserves to step down when he is ready (even if it is another 2-3 seasons of mediocre ball). What I don't want is Tiller deciding on a successor that Burke and the fan base don't agree with.

I remember what it was like before Tiller - terrible! I also remember what it was like from 1997 to 2002 - Good. Now it is mediocre and I'm tired of it. When it was terrible, it didn't bother me to miss games. Now I spend time and effort trying to see the games and I get frustrated when I can watch them.

Anonymous said...

I agree with that. It has been frustrating getting to 5-0 only to finish 8-5. I also don't believe Spack is the answer. His defense has been the biggest problem the last several years.... Just believe Tiller deserves to leave when he's ready, which I believe he was gonna coach next year and retire anyway. He would rather go fishing in Wyoming than keep coaching.

Almost everyone agrees the program has stopped improving. Yes, 10 bowls in 11 seasons is something to be proud of -- we've never said it isn't.

However, the goal should be to keep getting better and Purdue stopped getting better as a football program quite a while ago. The easy target is October 2004 versus Wisconsin, but one can make arguments that it was earlier than that. Perhaps even the Rose Bowl of 2001.

I'm a pretty forgiving fan but I'm tired of the team looking ill-prepared and absolutely never beating anyone unless we're heavy favorites. The program needs to move uphill and I don't think a 65 year old man who is content with Motor City Bowl appearances is the guy to do it.

Do I think he should be out-and-out fired? No. But I think he should be encouraged to think about his job future and retirement as a very soon option. And he should NOT have a say in who follows him. That's one of the dumbest, most pointless trends in sports.

Hey Nate-

You are right, Lafayette/West Lafayette is nothing like Madison, which may be why Chryst wants to come down. Madison may be the cool, hip place at the moment, but it's also extremely weird. Some other reasons he may want out. 1)Taxes - he moves to Indiana, his state tax bill gets cut in half. 2) Property taxes - my parents live in the 'burbs of Milwaukee and their property tax bill is out of this world. Finally, 3) Schools. You have to live in the burbs of Madison to get a good school. He could walk to work in West Lafayette and his kids would attend great schools. And sure he could leave for Wisconsin in a few years. And my wife could go lesbian tomorrow. My point, it's not something worth worrying about.

96 -

Wasn't saying that Lafayette suffered in the comparison - is that what you assumed? Madison is simply what he knows and presumably likes since he grew up there and has returned. As a non-liberal, I would probably steer clear of Madison myself :)

Nothing to worry about, just trying to take a stab at predicting the future. You've got a good point... and good luck with your wife :)

Just heard that Tiller probably won't be back next year to break all time wins record. What a joke. He deserves better than this! Purdue needs to take a look at Nebraska. They wish a coaching change never took place.... All those Tiller haters out there better keep your fingers crossed as i can see this blowing up in your face.....

Anonymous said...

Nebraska? Are you kidding me?

They had just a little bit more success than Tiller's Boilermakers... how can you even compare the two?

The program blew up in Tiller's face about 4 years ago. I am not a Tiller hater. In fact I'm quite grateful for the excitement and success he brought to Purdue. But don't you see a problem when your head coach is only coaching to attain a record? We need someone who has goals other than that.
