In just two days, our Boilers face off against our theoretical rival, Indiana. And don't you just wish we played them twice this season and MSU just once? I sure do.
As the imagery associated with this posts shows, my line of thinking is that we need to be the Cobra Kai this weekend. No fricking mercy. Because it's not just about a Big Ten win (though that IS critical). This game is the only matchup between the two this season. IU is going to get better before long -- we all know this. And IU has nearly always gotten the better of the Boilermakers when it comes to recruiting. So what if you're a potential recruit, a kid from Indiana, who is watching these two teams? And you see the Boilermakers blow out the hapless Hoosiers in a raucous Mackey.... I would think that could have an impact on a young lad.
That said, I will admit I'm genuinely concerned about this game. Boilerdowd has told me I'm crazy to be worried, simply because IU is just that bad. And I understand that. But they've got little to lose and everything to gain... and we have a LOT to lose. I don't expect the Boilers to come out tight, but they've been slow-starters for two seasons now, and a slow start against a bad team is the one recipe for disaster. Allowing IU to hang around would be terrible, even if the Boilers pull out the win.
So going back to the Cobra Kai, we do indeed need to strike first, strike hard and show no mercy. IU got some wins over the sad Boilermakers teams in Keady's final years and Painter's first one. It's time to rub the salt right back in. And I don't care how bad IU is -- it will feel great, and I'd love to see a 30 point win. As 'dowd pointed out to me, Painter won't do that -- he will not rub it in. And that's a good thing. But I don't think 20-25 point wins are rubbing it in.
Let's show we're that much better. Let's show we really are a top 15 team. Let's demonstrate that the Purdue program is in that much better shape than the Indiana program. Let there be no doubt.
Sweep the leg.

We have been cheated out of two wins (one last year, one this year) that should be on our side in the all-time series.
Scheduling is scheduling, what can we do? We can write the Big Ten and our schools stating we would like to see a round-robin format for conference games in football and basketball. I would much rather see that instead of a twelfth university added simply because it would reflect a truer conference championship. Screw divisions and conference championship games.
Here's a little precursor to Saturday's game: http://www.boilersports.com/
Which one of you guys made this?

In all seriousness, there's nothing to worry about. IU is that bad.
Saw Tom Crean speak at an alumni luncheon last Thursday. While I think many are giving him the benefit of the doubt, I'm still not completely sold (just about 90%).
First is how awful this team is at turning the ball over. Second being free throws. I know Crean isn't out there shooting and dribbling, but I think that reflects coaching.
Second, I'm sick of IU "fans" (like the one on boilersports) acting as if our young players are helpless fawns in the woods. Get a grip. Pritch was heavily recruited by Michigan State, and Nick Williams was the player of the year in Alabama. Growing pains time is over. Freshman step up all over the country.
That said, the one reason I do believe in Crean is that he shares my frustration. He made zero excuses, and in fact blamed the turnovers, deer in headlights look, FTs, etc on himself at this luncheon and vowed that things would have to be better in the future. From that standpoint, I'm glad he's not using this year as a crutch and a get out of free jail card.
All in all, I think Crean will get us to where we need to be but the lack of progress is a little frustrating.
FWIW, I wouldn't touch this line unless it was below above 28 points. It's going to be that ugly.
I'm not going to suggest that Purdue won't beat my Hoosiers up and down the floor, which they will. However, don't you see the irony in hoping that the Boilers perform like the Cobra Kai, the villainous punks who eventually lose to the short, scrawny pupil of Mr. Miyagi? That's kind of like hoping to channel the spirit of the 2008 Super Bowl Patriots. I'm not saying the Hoosiers will shock Purdue. I'm just sayin'.
How could you not make a "Put him in a body bag, Johnny! YEAH!!!" reference? That's the best line in the whole damn movie
Cobra Kai LOST, Mr. Man. WTF?!?!
Yes we need to win and blow this IU team up. We also, however, need Nemmy to stop being a jackhole with the ball above the arc and we need to get our bench playing a level higher going into the post season. My biggest beef with Painter this season has been those things.
If I were "Matty" I'd have Nemmy doing something unnatural to make him break the 3pt habit. Running wind sprints for 15 minutes for each missed 3 would be a start. Making him prostitute himself in Lafayette for missing four 3pt shots or more. Something, anything, to get it through his eastern European cranium that he should be a POST player.
Secondly we need Green, Reid and Buckets rotating into the game more regularly. We'll need them in the postseason, dammit. Secondly why the hell aren't any of the other freshmen getting time? Smith and Hart need some experience.
That Boilersports.com is the funniest thing I have seen!! I'm still laughing, the ND football thing made me cry I was laughing so hard. Who made this, thats great!
We didn't make it...but love the football segment especially.
Cobra Kai lost because they didn't think losing was a possibility. I don't think that's the case for a Painter-coached team. Over-confidence doesn't seem to be a problem for his teams.
J and I disagree on a lot about the IU game. I'm not worried about it because of my exposure to IU here in Indiana...I also think it's a good idea to call off the dogs once you get a 20+ point lead late in the second half. It's not mercy, it's class...and things are cyclical. Our Boilers were in IU's lousy situation just four years ago...and no one on IU's coaching staff was there.
All that said, I hope it's a methodical shellacking.
Class is fine and I don't disagree that we should show it IF we're blowing them out (let's not assume we will -- that's dangerous)... BUT, beating lousy IU by 15 looks like... meh. Beating them by 30 helps with rankings, votes, etc., which ultimately helps with seeding.
Don't like Cobra Kai. Relating Purdue to the evil forces of Cobra Kai, King Kobra, Cobra (ala GI Joe), Black Mamba, or any other snake form of evilness is not right. We are the good guys - we wear black! Wait a second...
And if we don't put them in a body bag, it will bring great shame on our dojo.
