Jeer, Jeer, For Old Notre Dame

The young lady pictured here plays for the Notre Dame ladies golf team. She's a senior, her name is Annie Brophy and since Brophy rhymes with "trophy," she must have felt entitled to one.

I don't know what went on in her blonde head, but Annie decided to lie about her score on the front nine this past weekend, saying she carded a 30 with five birdies and an eagle.

The news story is still hazy, in my opinion, but somehow people got wise to the fact that this seemed a bit off. Backbedaling furiously on the back nine, Brophy apparently lied again and claimed "quadruple-bogey/triple-bogey/bogey on Nos. 10-12."

Officials disqualified her for "unsportsmanlike conduct," and:

“She thought she was being funny,” said Cross, who believes the Irish senior was unaware of the impact her dishonesty had on the rest of the field and left the course embarrassed.

Maybe she was just being funky?

Seriously, though, I don't get how lying and cheating is funny. When I play my buddies on the weekend, I get pissed if someone seems to be bending the rules. I also find it hard to believe a senior in college who has presumably played golf for the majority of her life doesn't understand the impact dishonesty has on the game. Golf is one of those few games where your honesty is of paramount importance.

As my dad once said to me, if you cheat at golf, you cheat at life.

Put me down for a 4!

I love that last line in the post. So true.

Not to justify her behavior, but from what I gather this isn't nearly as bad as people are making it out to be. She didn't attempt to lie about her actual official score, she was only lying to the volunteer score trackers. In other words, had she not been caught, her real score would still have counted at the end of the round. What she did was incredibly rude and unclassy, and caused major inconveniences for several other teams, but she wasn't trying to cheat.

This would be a little like saying Purdue should be disqualified from any basketball games where ESPN's gamecast accidentally misreports the score. Granted, it wouldn't be Purdue lying to ESPN as a prank, and I'm by no means condoning her behavior, but I think everyone who wants to crucify this girl needs a little chilling out.

I think you might have to admit, we aren't exactly "crucifying" her.

And I noted how she claimed bad scores in the opposite direction.

Kyle, don't confuse the ND haters with facts. I agree, it was VERY rude and classless, but not what some want to make it out to be. I'm certainly no ND fan, but I prefer my anti-ND stories (which there are plenty) to be based on facts....

Wait, you agree it's "rude and classless" and then accuse us of not basing it on facts?

You may want to check yours. I even linked to the story AND provided direct quotes from it, so all the facts are there.

Well, you called her a cheater. Was there an NCAA rule that gives you a trophy for what you report to some website on the course? I don't know where the cheating occurred unless she signed and turned in a false scorecard or used an illegal club or ball.

Idiot liar, yes.
