National Champs

We'll admit it- we don't follow a lot of sports that are played by the student athletes at Purdue. But, anytime a Boiler or group of Boilers is crowned the best in the nation, it's noteworthy.

The Lady Boilers golf squad is the 2010 National Champ!

Remember, this follows losing their best individual player ever, in '09, Maria Hernandez. That's a pretty-amazing two years for any school not in a warm-weather state, but is flat-out astonishing for a team from Indiana.

And the best part is that they've got everyone back next year.

The list of non-warm-weather schools who've won looks like this:

Tulsa (once for real in 1982, once vacated)
Duke (5 times)
Purdue

And as said above, that was without Hernandez. Damn good job, ladies.

How funny is it that two-thirds of the Purdue team titles are from golf?

When they built the new golf course back a decade ago, that was specifically to bring in better talant to the golf team. Looks like all that work they did in the 90's is really paying off.

Lionsfan, it's pretty crazying seeing that list- hopefully a new tradition is beginning. Ben's point could make that a reality.

Agreed, Plang...I talked about that very premise this time last year with the individual accolades of both Boudia in swimming, and Hernandez in golf.

People can say what they want about Burke, but he made these sports a priority and it paid figurative dividends.

Now, hopefully the investment in football facilities, basketball facilities and even the eventual baseball facility will do the same.

That's a good point. Look at how close the baseball team came to winning its first Big Ten title in over 100 years ... one more good player could have been the difference.

Burke has done a great job getting facilities steadily improved across all sports (Purdue even hosts some NCAA championships now); two of Purdue's three titles have come during his watch, and of course we know about football and basketball performance.

Those sports have the visibility and bring in the money, but sometimes secondary sports are the ones that can become dynasties. Every Big Ten school has many more titles outside those two sports than from them. Maybe women's golf is the sport that will start filling Purdue's trophy case ... it may not be the one we'd prefer, but a few extra champions while we wait sure doesn't hurt!
