WVU Returns the Favor 68-64

Just out of reach...

Last year, the Mountaineers were ranked 6th and came into Mackey on Jan 1 and got run out of the gym by the then #4 Boilermakers. This year, Purdue had to travel to the hills of West Virginia and WVU returned the favor. While the loss wasn't nearly the blowout Purdue laid on them last year, it was still a statement win for the Mountaineers, as evidenced by their fans storming the floor. Fans of a team that made the Final Four last year and had just chanted "overrated" at Purdue. Okay.

This game was close from beginning to end, with many lead changes and a distinct and noticeable feel to the way the momentum alternated between the two teams. However, as we've seen at other times this season, Purdue failed to close when they had the chance and West Virginia got hot at the right time.

And let's be sure to mention that early here -- West Virginia played a very good game. They shot the ball well and got especially hot at the right time, in the last 8 minutes of the game. Purdue had gotten the lead up to six and Gus Johnson even said it was "in danger" of getting away from WVU (this was right after E'Twaun finally came to life). He was right. Purdue had gotten a couple of good defensive stops and had scored. It was time to put the boot on the throat. However, it didn't happen and the Mountaineers chipped away, closing the gap and then, as I said, getting hot and finishing off the Boilers.

That said, let's look at some other facts of the game. West Virginia had six different players go to the line. Do you know how many Purdue had? Well, Terone Johnson was 0-1 from the line. Toss that out and how many do you think went to the line?

"Let's go huntin'! Yeehaw!!"
One. One guy. JaJuan Johnson was 5-6 from the line. And that was it folks. Seven free throw attempts for Purdue in a college basketball game. A very close game, at that. Seems odd, no?

West Virginia went to the line....twenty-six times. A differential of 19. Now, let's say that was reversed. Can you imagine what Huggy Bear might be saying in the postgame press conference? This is one of those things we wish Matt Painter would do more of... not necessarily bitching to the media, but getting in the officials' ear -- like the joke Jim Burr, who did this game -- and reminding them that Purdue had only a few free throws the entire dame game! You can explain away a 5 or even 10 FTA difference to styles, etc., but nearly 20? Come on. If that's a little closer to reality, this game could have been very different.

Another concerning fact: E'Twaun looks like he's struggling mentally right now. He's physically healthy, so far as we know. But Smooge doesn't look right... to many of us.

A side note... (and this, obviously, isn't everyone, I realize.) I was actually a little surprised at some of the negative commentary about Moore on Twitter during the game. Some were suggesting he needed to be benched or limited in his shots. Let's all slow down here. This a good soldier for this program. A guy who has led this team for four years and has gone largely unnoticed. If he played for Duke, you'd be hearing about him every damn weekend. Instead, you almost never hear about him. And what would you have them do? Give up on E'Twaun Moore? This team is going absolutely NOWHERE without a confident, healthy Moore right now. So he absolutely needs to be doing what he's doing and trying to shoot his way out of his slump. Support him with the dedication he has shown to us and the Black and Gold.

B-Dowd and I discussed how Painter clearly ran that last play for him in an attempt to raise his confidence. And while I am totally fine with doing it, I would have run a three-point play for him. You're on the road, it's a two-point deficit...go for the win. He cans it and his confidence is back and the team may have a win. He misses and you're no worse off then they wound up. However, Painter called a two-point jumper play (assuming that was the call and it wasn't a busted play). In that case, I don't see how you don't get the ball to JJ in that situation. He'd been unconscious on those mid-range jumpers and I don't think it would impact Moore's confidence if they play was for his buddy JJ to tie the game. It's not like we're suggesting you get the ball to Bubba Day instead of Moore, you know?

All that said, Purdue did not play a great game and again failed to close on the road...and still had a chance to win.

Consider these three things:

1) The asinine free throw disparity.
2) E'Twaun had a horrible first half, and wound up 6-18 (33%).
3) Ryne Smith took two shots the whole game and finished with 0 points.

If any one of those three doesn't occur, Purdue probably wins this game and we're talking about what a big win this is. So while, yes, there is work to be done, let's keep it in perspective. It's not as horrible a loss as it might feel like right now. And why? Well, that's simple... it's not a conference loss. Purdue remains 4-1 in the Big Ten with Penn State coming to town this week... who Purdue must crush at this point.

The fact that Moore and JJ took 35 of Purdue's 58 shots is significant, too. I know they account for most of the offense, but nobody really picked up that much-discussed "third scorer" slack today. Lewis Jackson had a simply terrific game and his ten points was nice to have but wasn't even the best part. However, it made him Purdue's third scorer...by a lot. Ryne Smith only playing 13 minutes and not scoring at all (while averaging 17 in conference play) is a head-scratcher, to me. BDowd pointed out to me that he committed a foul early that resulted in a three-point play and that it appeared Painter wanted to go bigger. And that's fine for a little while, but how do you not work to get Ryne into the offense...if for no other reason than to make sure he's not ice cold when he's asked to take the most critical shot of the game? That three to tie it was just barely long and I am confident he hits that if he'd shot more than, you know, one attempt so far on the day.

JaJuan Johnson's game must be mentioned as well. JJ was the beast he is capable of being today, shooting 59% (10-17) from the field, 83% (5-6) from the line, scoring 26, nabbing two steals and grabbing seven rebounds. As much as E'Twuan's confidence looks shaky (though improving in that second half), JJ's looks sky-high. He took shot after shot and canned them. I have this feeling a 40+ point explosion might be coming from him this season.

The Boilermakers now need to regroup. This is not unfamiliar territory, though, as Matt Painter Purdue teams seem to always have that midseason lull where they lose... almost always in clumps. Let's hope the clump ends at two and we see another double-digit win streak begin. Let's also look for the Boilers to get to the hoop more to draw contact (E'Twaun Moore has not been to the line in four games now). And let's look for these guys to begin to finish on the road. The schedule begins to get absolutely brutal in about a week and our boys must be ready.

Can we stop with the going big and starting Carrol thing? We are 0-2 when Carrol gets significant minutes.

I think Barlow has been excellent the past two games. I dont know if the stats back me up, but it seems like he makes 1 stupid play and about 4 or 5 excellent plays, and 1 athletic play that nobody else on the team besides maybe JJ or 'twaun could make. While Lewis Jackson was decent, he still forces his own shot more than neccessary.

Looked it up... KB's stats werent all that special against Minnesota, but against WVU:

MIN FGM-A Reb AST TO PF PT
Barlow 21 4/5 3 1 1 2 8
Jackson 24 5/8 3 1 4 4 10

Just saying, I'd take Barlow this game over Jackson. Add that he affects more shots defensively, and he has less shots blocked that leads to opposing teams fast breaks, and I think he is starting to show a lot more good GDB and less bad GDB.

Of course, I have defended Scott Martin in a post, so what do I know?

I don't see why LJ and Barlow have to be mutually exclusive? With Moore playing the way he was, he could sit more (not the entire game). Byrd could DEFINITELY sit more. Smith DID sit more.

As to Carroll...I disagree. When he was in the game, the offense ran better. When Byrd was in, the offense stagnated because it was 5 guarding 4.

I think the reason that Smith didn't play more was that he's become a defensive liability. When Barlow and TJ were on Hoffarber, he cooled down in a hurry. Ryne was a step slow coming off screens and wasn't able to elevate enough to disrupt the Hoff's shot and it seemed to take MP a while to figure that out and adjust.

On offense, he's taken to standing in the corner and waiting for the drive and kick. With defenses paying more attention to him, he can't just wait around to get open. It may take a few set plays to try and get him the separation necessary for an open look, but today and Wednesday, he just didn't look like he was moving much without the ball.

I understand the love for E'Twaun, but he's in some sort of serious funk and his shot selection especially against Minny was bad. Even his two made 3s today drew a lot of iron before finally falling. He needs to concentrate on taking the ball to the rim. He hits 2 or 3 runners in the lane and I think he's right back, but firing up 6 or 7 3s a game is not going to bring him out of it.

I have noticed this as well, but I respectfully disagree. Purdue seems to have developed a reputation amongst officials (if only in the Big Ten) as a group of good kids that play hard and don't whine about the calls (along with Painter). I can tell you as a former official (albeit at a much, much lower level), people whining did not affect my officiating in a positive way. In my opinion, it made it difficult for me to not have a bias against the whining team - if the other team did not whine.

Besides as a fan, I love that our players and coach just want to play ball and aren't interested in working the refs for what they think it will get them 1 or 2 extra calls a game. It isn't worth it and it is just ugly. I would rather win without it or lose with some self-respect.

That said, I thought this was the worst officiated game of the season - and I have seen all of them.

Purdue still should have taken advantage of all of the turnovers in the first half. Had Purdue done that, it would have more than compensated the poor officiating - so I would rather focus on that as something that Purdue actually had control of and failed badly.

The good news is that maybe we can stop whining about not getting respect from the national media. IMO the last two games proves their doubts are more well-founded than we care to admit. I say we almost drop out of the top 25 - probably in the 20's or maybe even drop out completely.

It's not the end of the world by a longshot. Only one of the losses really count in the race for the B10 title. Let's learn from this and play better on the road.

GDB and Jackson dont have to be mutually exclusive. I shouldnt have phrased it that way. I do think the officiating was pretty bad this game. But the team's failure to distance itself from the Mountainers in the first half hurt. I havent seen as great of an individual performance atheltic-wise as JJ's had since I dont know, Landry's Junior year. Hes a beast. If he would have known that Hummel wasnt going to be able to play this year, he might have grown pro, but coming back has had to help his draft stock.

I think that as John Hart gets back in to game rhythym, and Barlow continues to develop, some of these close losses will turn in to W's. As for Carroll, Maricius, Bade, I dont know. I would love to see something like LJ, Smith, Moore, Barlow, JJ, but that wont work angainst the Michigan States of the league. Hopefully as Carroll continues to play hell continue to improve.

LewJack did not have a terrible game and we would have been worse without him on the floor. I have no problem with Carroll on the floor. I would like him to be more assertive on the offensive end. He's got good hands and moves well, great vision of the court. I think defensively, JJ did not match up well with the Turk. I would have liked to see Sandi out there roughing him up a bit, but the way they were calling fouls, it probably would have hurt us more. Ultimately we have to score points, but when the opposing team has 26 free throws to our 8, something's not right.

WOW! I'm surprised that we only fell to 13/14!

I was expecting to either hit #20 or below! At least there is some respect for us out there. I think that's probably about right

Of course, if we keep playing poor defense, battling injuries, and Smooge can't hit, we aren't top 20.

I am actually really nervous about PSU on Wed. They took down MSU and U of I and only lost to OSU by like 3 at OSU...

Why can we not hold onto the ball? THAT is the reason we lost the game. Watching the game, there were so many times where the ball was just stripped out of our hands (or deflected on a perimeter pass) for an easy breakaway for West Virgina. Once it happened when we had the 6 pt lead late, going for 8; WV got momentum and started their winning run off of this. I have brought this up for the past couple of games. I knew it would cost us and 1 game after I said something, it IS the reason we lost. It seems we have problems with the fundamental of holding onto the rock (especially when we get an initial rebound, just to get it slapped away). I know once we turned it over right under our basket. What is the problem here?

With Ryno hitting every three in the world, I think we underestimated the effect of Moore's slump on the team. I really think it's been hurting our offensive flow not having him active. LewJack has been forcing his drives (and has gotten more than a few swatted, not to mention being called for offensive fouls), Smith has gone back to the pump fake as his offensive plan, Byrd's not shooting at all. It's like everyone except LewJack has gone back to the "stand around and let JJ and E'Twaun do their thang" offense. With E'Twaun not doing it, and LewJack forcing things that he has no business forcing (he does best as an *opportunistic* scorer), we need to have someone step up. Carroll's not going to do it, TJ has the tools but isn't quite ready, and DJ / Ryno are passing up open looks instead of pulling the trigger.

The good news is that Moore started to come out of his slump in the second half. He rattled a few to the bottom of the net -- but they fell. He pushed and created his own shot in a few cases, and some of them fell. He did that against a very active WVU defense that plays aggressive on that side of the ball much like we do.

If Moore can break out of this slump against PSU, we're right back on track.
