On Senior Night, JJ and E'Twaun Do What They Do: Win 75-67

Thank you.
The game almost felt secondary tonight, as the Boiler faithful sent off 33 and 25 with many resounding Mackey cheers, as thanks for four years of dedication and hard work. Once again, the place was clearly deafening even through the TV broadcast. Let's say that first, everyone: great work again, especially the Paint Crew who always brings it.

As is always a concern on a night like this, the home team fell behind. However, it wasn't really that Purdue was playing poorly -- Illinois was just shooting the lights out and playing like the team we all thought they were capable of bring this season. Of course, that only lasted about ten minutes and then they reverted to the Illinois who resides on the bubble.

The Illini rode that hot early shooting to a 13 point advantage of 31-18. From then on, the Boilermakers ground them into dust, outscoring Illinois 57-36 the rest of the way. Yeah, that's a little more like it.

The forces of good showed again how this team just might be a little different than some of the others over the years. There has -- as of yet -- been no terrible letdowns. Beating Wisconsin was followed by a convincing win over OSU which was follwed by the requisite beatdown of IU which was followed by a senior night victory over Illinois. Assuming they can close the deal against the lowly Hawkeyes this weekend, this will end one of the best regular season stretches we've ever seen from Purdue, and that includes some pretty great seasons.

As for the game itself tonight, the scoring leaders were -- who else? -- JJ and E'Twaun, who had 23 and 18, respectively. They combined for over 50% from the field, 4 of 9 from three, seven assists, 11 rebounds, three steals and two blocks. Two performances indictative of the seasons these fine young men have had. Both Smooge's steals resulted in breakaways; one ended with a one-handed jam and the other with an "and 1" three-point play.

Kelsey Barlow effectively got under McCamey's thin skin tonight, as well, and though McCamey's numbers wound up pretty good (18 points on 50% shooting) it's tempered by the fact that most of his damage was done early in the game.

Ryne Smith chipped in 8 points and 9 big rebounds, not to mention a level of hyperness I haven't seen out of him this year. He was bouncing around, flailing his arms, playing to the crowd...Ryno was having some fun. And I love it. It looks to me like this guy is ready to be a senior.

Lewis Jackson had a fairly quiet night but as has been the habit of this team, the mythical "third scorer" baton was passed again -- this time to DJ Byrd. DJ hit three treys and scored 16 points, to go along with his seven rebounds, three assists, one steal and one block. Not a bad all-around game from a guy who when he plays his next game in Mackey will only be a junior.

Matty shortened the bench considerably tonight, with only eight guys seeing the floor. I don't know if this was just an anomaly or a sign of how things will tighten up as we head into March basketball.

Senior night was perfect for the seniors themselves, as JaJuan had another game that typifies his season this year, as well as a beautiful monster jam off a feed from DJ Byrd. It reminded one of so many jams that made us talk about what a manchild JJ was.

And Smooge had his jam on the breakaway (not bad for an "unathletic" guy), but more a propos of his time in black and gold was his final basket of the night, a triple with two guys in his face and under a minute to go, the shot clock down to 4 seconds and the Boilers leading 69-64. Naturally, it rattled home as the sniper hit his target.

I can only imagine how great it was to be in the house tonight. This team loves one another and it is very obvious. They want to succeed together and they want to celebrate those successes with one another. We've seen a lot of Purdue teams and at the moment it's hard to think of one that is more cohesive than this one. A lot of that is probably because of Matt Painter, but a lot also has to do with the character of these young men.

As much as the guys are enjoying the ride, one thing that remains very clear as you watch this team is that each of these victories, milestones, steps and celebrations are all seemingly part of the journey... the mission continues.

Thank you JJ and Smooge. You both won with class and helped Purdue rise from the ashes.

One of the greatest things about Purdue basketball is watching a bunch of kids who genuinely love the game and each other, are proud of their school and appreciate their fans. I may be bias but it seems that this team, and others under CMP have more fun playing together and are closer than most if not all other teams I have seen. Rarely do you see another team smile, high five and laugh as much as this team. Winning helps, but more than that I think it is because these guys play for the right reasons. Unlike programs like UK or OSU who have players that are there only because they couldn't go straight to the NBA, our guys love basketball the same way they did when they were 11. They love college, love the atmosphere, love the culture, and love being coached into better players. And more important than anything our guys are nice people. In an era of one and dones and huge egos it is a privilege to be able to root for not only great players but great people too. Sure if we had a five star one and done guy we may get more attention and may win a few more games, but what we would lose is nights like this where we say goodbye to seniors with a lump in our throats, feeling like proud parents.

Kelsey Barlow is an asshole. He is my type of asshole and that is why his performances this season has made him my secret favorite Boiler.

Barlow hit McCamey with a strong boxout at the free throw line that initiated the little push that started the unneeded video review by the officials because they wanted to watch themselves on tv. They think they are the real stars of the Big10.
Barlow's next action is why I love Barlow. On the next free throw for McCamey he puts an even more aggressive box out on him that shoves McCamey back several feet.

Barlow is an asshole and I love him. May even buy his jersey next year to take the place of the Moore jersey I have had for 3 years now.

Was that Kevin Love out there or Ryne Smith ripping down boards? What a game from D.J. He needs to keep that shit up. Illinois came to play last night and we all know they are talanted and capable so that did make the game a little nerveracking for me. However, a very strong Boiler team prevailed and the seniors weren't denied having a senior night type of game.

word verification: nosecry

a lot of teams are going to be nosecrying when they get elimated from the dance at the hands of the Boilers.

Choo Choo Muthas

P.S. I think Barlow is everyone's secret favorite player at times.

I LOVED that Kelsey didn't back down on his box-out on the 2nd McCami FT and I was looking to see how he responded, and he made himself Sir Charles wide on that one...

This team is fun to watch and I look forward to the real season getting started.

For the first time, I was truly sad at the end of the game that had only positives (W, no injuries, etc.)...

Etwuan and JJ have been wonderful young men who have matured on and off the court. We are really going to miss them...beyond their points: The way the conduct themselves, their grades, their fraternity on the team, etc.

What a privilege to have them play for our school. I couldn't be prouder to be a Boilermaker.

Really wish Hummell could have ended his career with these two.

What is everyone's opinion on the Paint Crew wearing gold/yellow in the lower bowl last night? I personally think it looks great. I wish the whole PC would wear something similar to that all year. Black just doesn't stand out very well, especially on tv

I don't think "one block" does Byrd justice. His block put a 7'1" senior on his ass on the floor without the ball. (Granted, Tisdale is more of the spindly type rather than the solid type, but he's still 7'1".)

I think this game showed both the coaching skill and the depth this team has ... when Illinois started out with a machine-like offense, leaving Boilers puzzled from time to time at exactly what was happening, Painter used timeouts to get his guys focused, back to how they are supposed to play defense. When the Big Two were able to pull Purdue even but not quite break away, guys like Byrd and Smith helped out and created the separation you need to win Big Ten games.

I'm glad we got to watch E'Twaun and JaJuan for four years, and I'm looking forward to watching their remaining games. I hope there are ten left ...

That game was the reason I want a Young Alumni Paint Crew.

Sit anyone willing close to the real paint crew, and let us go after it. There are people in the stands that want to stand the whole game, dress up, paint up, & holler and are quieted because of some of the elderly and elderly at heart.

As a rebuttal to the post about the Paint Crew's shirt color, Purdue's colors are Old Gold and Black; not Wisconsin cheddar cheese orangey "gold" and black. The correct gold is on the players' jerseys. I am happy that the Paint Crew organizers were able to get everyone on the same page. Next time, can we go with Purdue's true colors?

Do we have any scholarships available for Brandon Davies since he is now kicked out of BYU?

I'm going to 2nd boxercr. I did really like the fact that it was a nice contrast wearing gold, but it was definitely the wrong color gold!

boxercr - agree with you, but getting old gold for t-shirts seems to be harder than finding an IU grad that doesn't end every statement with "Would you like fries with that."

Michael R. - I'm pretty sure I would take our players over Davies. He's okay, but I think we have better talent coming through the line.

That said, Purdue will probably move up a spot or two when the next poll comes out.
